Rumor: Red Steel sequel to go online
It seems everything we know about Red Steel 2 we know from job postings, including its very existence. The latest rumblings stem from a job opening on Gamasutra from developer Ubisoft seeking an online programmer specifically for Nintendo Wii. The position is for a studio in Paris, "where Red Steel and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games have been developed." The listing also notes that "knowledge of Unreal" (presumably the engine) is a plus.
Nothing has been confirmed; Ubisoft has committed to making a plethora of Wii games, meaning than any possible unveiling might be a ways off.
The first Red Steel, a Wii launch title, received much press in the months before its release but ultimately did not meet the hype, as indicated by tepid reviews.

It may not have lived up to the hype in terms of the campaign, but my friends and I had a lot of fun with the multiplayer. It wasn't particularly well made by today's standards, but it was very enjoyable. I'd definitely get a sequel... especially if it was online.
Gavin @ May 21st 2007 5:34PM
This shows that the Wii is obviously the best platform for rushing out a crap game, hyping the hell out of it and then rushing out a sequel so you rabid and shortsighted fan base will get suckered into buying yet another last-gen game with tacked on controls.
Ian Von Porter @ May 21st 2007 5:39PM
Red Steel is a piece of crap.
Red Steel 2.0 will be twice the amount of crap.. now with online.
ill trooper @ May 21st 2007 5:42PM
The Wii can go online?
I'm joking, you Nintendo freaks. But maybe I'm not.
NeverSage @ May 21st 2007 5:46PM
Can the Wii handle the unreal engine...? Maybe they're using the first one.

I've they're using unreal engine 2

Red Steel sold over a million copies. Which is like a game for the PS3 or 360 selling 3 to 4 million...which would be impossible.
Striderhayasa @ May 21st 2007 6:04PM
the original is trash and was bought because of the hype machine. I have absolutely no hope for the sequel, I don't care which Unreal Engine they're using. UBI went on and on about how they tweaked the controls and tweaked the controls of the original. I bought that garbage and was pissed as hell when I started playing it. Then I popped in CoD 3 for Wii and thought..."WHAT THE HELL, why can't Red Steel control like this?"
UBI is the new face of mediocre development and shovelware. They had the opportunity to make a stellar FPS for Wii and blew it big time. Then had to audacity to release that putrid piece of shit, Far Cry.
UBI won't get my money unless Red Steel 2 is so incredibly good that it rivals Unreal Tournament 2004 in FPS excellence.
Nick K @ May 21st 2007 6:08PM
To all the haters, put some time into Red Steel instead of cowering and running because of the hour or so it takes to grasp the controls.
If you do, you'll see some of the best lighting and texture work on the Wii to date, and enjoy a lengthy single player game and descent multiplayer. It's not perfect, but it's better than what some have said. Part two will be great.

Funny PS3 has only one 1 million+ celler worldwide while Wii has seven.
In theU.S., The PS3 has none and the Wii has three.

How to spot a Nintendo zealot
in 2005: "Sales mean absolutely nothing!!!"

ANOTHER Red Steel? Say it ain't so!

"in 2005: "Sales mean absolutely nothing!!!"
in 2007: "ZOMG Look at the sales figures!! It prints money, lawls!!!:"
Maybe that's because in 2005 the cost of making a game for one console cost about the same as for making it for the other 2. However with development costs for the Wii being 25 to 33 percent of the PS3 or 360 that is no longer the case.
Your point is moot.
kingofwale @ May 21st 2007 6:55PM
>If you do, you'll see some of the best lighting and texture work on the Wii to date
That says VERY little about Red Steel and Wii as a whole, Frankly, when RE4 remake comes to Wii, it will be the best looking Wii game for a loooong time. *sighs*
and For people who got used to that control, kudo. It must take a special person. It's like me saying how I got over Spidy graphic on PS2 (humanly impossible, but I'm sure some people are fanboy enough to claim so)
Nick K @ May 21st 2007 7:22PM
"If you do, you'll see some of the best lighting and texture work on the Wii to date"
Hmm, maybe if you finished reading that sentence you would've seen I said MUCH more about Red Steel as a whole. Nobody was talking about Wii either.
NvM @ May 21st 2007 7:38PM
I picked up Red Steel for the first time and had no problem controlling whatsoever.
Its not because i was used to the Wii, it was because I was used to Timesplitters 2.
The way you shoot and turn is the same.
So don't blame the wii remote for that.
But I'll give this one a rental, just like the first.
ugtv.org @ May 21st 2007 7:39PM
I loved playing Red Steel, but the number of bugs in the game made me stop. The random and un-predictable save point system was enough to pull my hair out.
Great content, poor execution.
Mr Khan @ May 21st 2007 7:45PM
@ kingofwale
you're forgetting the now-confirmed Metroid Prime 3 in that statement about how RE4 mk II will be the best graphical experience on Wii for some time
Retro Studios pushed the bill graphically for the GC, i don't see why they wouldn't for the Wii...
kingofwale @ May 21st 2007 7:46PM
>I said MUCH more about Red Steel as a whole. Nobody was talking about Wii either.
let's first disregard the fact YOU mentioned "Wii" on your original comment, and point out we are talking about a Wii EXCLUSIVE?
no, my fault, we weren't talking about Wii, we were talking about PS3 and xbox 360.
sadly, your comment implied MUCH more than just on the surface. and frankly, Red Steel 2? That's like Superman game getting a sequel.
kingofwale @ May 21st 2007 7:48PM
>you're forgetting the now-confirmed Metroid Prime 3 in that statement about how RE4 mk II will be the best graphical experience on Wii for some time
well, it's EASY to forgot MP3's statement, if I remember correctly, they also claimed that the control will work JUST like mouse and keyboard. ;)
Mr Khan @ May 21st 2007 7:56PM
They still claim that, dude
The difference is that what people is basing all of thier impressions of the game so far are really impressions of a game that was essentially "Metroid Prime 2 Wiimote Edition"
the real build is meant to be much different, like the graphical discressions between Halo 3 Alpha and Beta
and to actually be on topic; i think if they changed the graphical style a little (ditch the Unreal engine, it clearly doesn't work), added online, and fixed the control bugs, it would definitely be worthy
kingofwale @ May 21st 2007 8:09PM
just looking at the current trend, I wouldn't be surprise if you get MP3 and find out it's more like MP2.5. Although that is not always a bad thing, if they can do the Wiimote correctly. Halo 3 might pull it off. but then again, it's Halo, they can pack a bag of dirt in it and it will still sale millions.
the key is "if Wiimote working like it's CLAIMED to?" that will be what break the game. I hope it does, MP3 is one of the very few Shooter (not pure shooter, i know) genre in Wii.
>so stop the hating!!!
why can I hate on crappy games? That's what gamers do, praise good game and bash the bad. (note, I said "gamer", not "fanboy", do NOT encourage developer to make horrible games)
and frankly, just because you like it, how does that make it an acceptable game?
Striderhayasa @ May 21st 2007 8:22PM
oh please people, why is it so hard to believe that someone DID put time into the game and still thought the game was shit. I bought Red Steel at launch and played it for two days before I gave up and took it back. I put about 6 or 7 hours into it. I tried to like it, I tried to give it a chance. It sucks. Not only is it glitchy and buggy, the arm animation as you turn is retarded and it's too damn slow. It's just not intuitive when you're in the middle of a fire fight and all of a sudden you're aiming at the ceiling even though your wiimote is still pointing at the guy you were trying to shoot. I had this happen to me a few times. It's like the remote lost synch with the game. It's trash and there's no degree of excuses that are going to change that when you have a game like CoD3 that has a far superior control scheme, that's not only more intuitive, it's faster and almost simulates mouse and keyboard accuracy. THAT'S how a Wii FPS is supposed to control.
Don't get me started on the pathetic writing, cliche characters designs and the cheesy voice acting. Red Steel sold because the Wii was new and the hype carried it. There is no way in hell I would recommend Red Steel to anyone, not even if it's in the bargin bin with an additional 30 percent discount. Leave that game where it belongs...in the trash.

Because it's MUCH easier to call people "fanboy", "troll" or "Wii-hater" than to read the person's comment and response in return.
after all, you will have to use your brain to come up with an response, until calling people trolls, any idiot can do it.

When there is a game that would make you want to mow the lawn, rather than play it. There is definitely something wrong there.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ubisoft employees roamed the net to defend their products from critique.

Your comments confirm my theory that Ubisoft employees probably do roam the net defending their products. Your description seems to fit the definition of a Ubisoft employee perfectly.
For the record, I was forced to buy Red Steel against my better judgement. My nephew specifically requested the game and I had to buy it. What a terrible, glitchy, ugly game! The posts that say you need to spend a few hours getting used to the controls crack me up. You know how long it took for me to adapt to Elebit's FPS controls? About 15 seconds! And about Red Steel's controls, yes, I got 'em and they were terrible. The sword fighting was an absolute joke considering the motion controls were just replacements for basic button mapping. It also didn't make any sense; if I had a gun and some guy came up to me with a pair of swords to kill me I'm going to blow the mother.... away! I'm not going to put down my gun and grab a sword.
Air Guitar @ May 21st 2007 11:13PM
i actually really enjoyed the game. i fought the curser several times, and the second playthrough (yes, i played it twice :O ), i leared to truly hate the sword combat, but multiplayer is a blast and the game is really underappreciated. i think ubisoft knows its issues with the last one, but i would think they would work to make Red Steel 2 everything that the original red steel wasnt, like everything they said at or around E3. this time Ubi isnt rushing, so in the end, we'll get a better game.
Arturo @ May 22nd 2007 12:03AM
to those saying stop complaining:
thats bullshit. the game sucks ass, to have to turn your sights all the way to the edge of the screen just to be able to turn is retarded, u cant deny that. it takes forever just to turn around lol, and thats just one of the many monstrous problems with the game.
Mattman @ May 22nd 2007 1:47AM
I hated Elibits control scheme. Found Red Steel easier to control. Never fought the crosshairs accept after swordfights. I mean, shit, you dont even have gunfights after them.
omfg @ May 22nd 2007 5:54PM
what do you expect that the game was "crappy", i liked it, but like i said what can you expect it was a launch title, most launches weren't good or they were but had alot of flaws, untold legends for the psp was good, but the loading time was a freaking joke, yet it was a good game reminded me of diablo.
jman @ May 22nd 2007 10:31PM
i def agree with nick k and brent g...the game takes time..i have rented the game about 6 or 7 times on my game pass...and everytime i give it a try it is even more enjoyable...so stop the hating!!!
BRENTG @ May 23rd 2007 12:13PM
Nick K, You are so right, I'm so sick of people claiming that this is game is horrible. Its far from! I had this game in my hands 1 week before the Wii was released and heard the horrible reviews before playing. I wasn't expecting much when playing and i discovered a bad/confusing menu and a shitty story line, that you cannot skip! besides these two semi minor flaws this game is worth buying! The controls feel so easy and smooth after playing for more that 3-4 hours. The graphics IMHO were great! i as very surprised on certain sections of the game. After beating the game i played multilayer with a friend and RED STEEL brought a whole new feeling. Multiplayer reminded me of the 007 days on the 64. This game is very under rated and before people dismiss this game, give it at least 3 hours of play time and multilayer. I believe people will have a different opinion after getting used to the controls and have played mutiplayer. Cant wait for online and a new menu overlay! Cant wait for REDSTEEL 2! DON'T BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE HYPE ON THIS GAME, I GAVE IT A CHANCE AND I CANT BELIEVE THE NEGATIVITY TOWARDS THIS GAME IT's GREAT.
