That 80GB PlayStation 3 that's been kicking around the FCC's filing cabinets for awhile isn't just being considered, it's finally going to see a release. In South Korea. According to a press release on Sony's South Korean site, the 80GB version will be released on June 16 for KWR 518,000, or $556. That's less money for more geebees!
While Sony denied a European release to GamesIndustry.biz, we can't help but think all that FCC paperwork wasn't someone's idea of a good time. With the 20GB model out of the way, and a cacophony of critics asking for price drops, it sounds like an opportune time to add this second SKU to the PlayStation 3 lineup worldwide.

Isn't the PS3 hard drive replaceable -- and fairly easily, at that?
Now, I realize that a large percentage of PS3 owners may not have the technical know-how to do so, or even care to, but for those of us that do, would there be a point to purchasing the 80 gig version?
If replacing the hard drive doesn't void the warranty, and the introduction of an 80 gb model means that there is a price drop for the 60 gb model, wouldn't you be better off purchasing the 60 gig and applying that saved money toward a larger (ostensibly larger than the 80 gig included) hard drive? Or would the price drop (not confirmed or detailed as to the amount) probably not be worth that much?
With the PS3 becoming a media hub, a larger hard drive would probably be on the horizon at some point -- especially with the much vaunted 10 year life span of the machine. So I'm just interested in figuring out the thoughts and motivations behind this introduction and pricing structure.
Thoughts?

I think 360 is more of a junk as its failure rate has demonstrated.

(other) Jeff,
I would gladly buy a 2nd or 3rd 360 from red ring issues than a ps3. the ps3's junk value comes from it being nothing more than a glorified blu-ray player. Its games either suck or they're on the 360 too and they tend to play better on the 360 as well. There's a reason it's failing

Euro and Korean model has FIXED Bluetooth 'disconection of joypads' problem.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=25163
"The filing also included details of proposed changes to the console's Bluetooth feature. But according to the SCEE spokesperson, "The chassis of the 80GB Korean PlayStation 3 is identical to the chassis of the European version. The only exception is the larger hard drive.""
Only new models of PS3 in USA have fixed antenna:

Wow.. so you rather spend $1200 over $600? Crazy man. And I love how people forget Decemeber 2005 to March 2006, where the 360 selection was very limited too. Wait till Holiday Season 07 when all three consoles will have their lineup at full blast. You can not compare 18 months to six months.

at $500, competing directly with the 360 Elite. It makes it comparable directly to the Elite pricewise, has more features than the Elite, and at 80gb eliminates the "twice the HD space" line that could be thrown out by MS and their fans as a positive of the Elite, which is the main reason I see for the 80gb unit to even exist. 20gb may not seem like much, but getting rid of that point alone is why I see it happening.

Korea is NOT getting a 60GB version. You know what this means, right? The 60GB is being phased out in favor of 80GB. In Korea at least.

Actually, yeah. Just buy a 2.5" SATA HD of your choice (most sites have em listed under Laptop/Notebook Hard Drives), open up the HDD bay of your PS3, swap out the drives, and power back on your PS3. The system will automatically detect the new HD and format it to PS3 specs. Like all HD formats, though, it will take a while.

The only reason a move to 80 GB is??????
The manufacturer they get the drives from no longer makes 60 GB drives. And they cost the same or less than 60 GB. It is the smallest drive that they can get volume discounts on.
On newegg.com, the smallest laptop drive I can find is a 40GB. An 80 is 15 dollars more and is faster.

(Last time I was at Futureshop they had a 60GB drive for "on sale" for 69.99 and beside that a 350GB for 89.99

A: Doesn't matter because they're all too busy playing StarCraft!
I use this as a projection as to how much Koreans care about the PS3, and all consoles for that matter.

Um, I'm on my 4th 360. And I didnt have to pay for shipping OR repair on the other 3. Thats what warantees are for. And you can tell being on my 4th that the 360 is worth it, unlike the PS3.
Now go kill yourself for being stupid.

Mainly why consoles have never been embraced in South Korea is because all the manufacturers have treated the region worse than Europe and Australia. PC gaming is strong there because, well, the market acknowledges them. Sony took the first important steps but until other companies treat the region as a viable market, consoles will remain second fiddle to PC there. I mean, hell, evidence? Korea just got their first taste of Nintendo DS in the form of DS Lite as of January 18th... OF THIS YEAR! They never got the original console.
If that doesn't illustrate companies sheer unwillingness to work in that market, what does?

As for joypad disconnect issues? Never had one and I've had my PS3 for 3 months now. Sure there are going to be units with problems, you 360 fanboys should be familiar with this.
20gbs more isn't that large of a change. A 200gb or 150gb may be in my future if/when its necessary.
I find it humorous that so many can't enjoy their own system choice without bashing on the 'other' system.
Live and let live, enjoy your purchase for its reasons, let others do the same you dickless tards.

Just out of curiousity, how many wireless networks are detectable by your system? Mine finds between 14-16 each time. Based upon the traffic over those signals, I get more or less disconnects. I can go full on months without issues but then on monday night, in particular, I can lose signal several times in one night. Only time it really sucks is when you are having a super heated match on VF5. We only had disconnect there once out of the 100+ hours we've put into that game.
