Remember when the ps1 came out? And it didn't have rumble... or analog sticks... guess I'm too young to remember whether people collectively bitched about that then too. I'd argue that the change from digital to analog controllers was much larger than from non-rumble to rumble as far as the affect it had on what games you played, but whatever.

The point is to make the ps3 a lot cheaper... so I wouldn't redesign the system, I'd leave some parts out.

no xD, and sD card slots
no HDMI
no emotion engine
no WiFi
20gb hard drive...

if they can get that package under 400... then that'd be a good deal.

It's funny how so many of you are saying they should release a trimmed down PS3 when they did that already and it failed.

In truth, they just need to release at least five great, innovative games and the system will at least sort of start to sell. That's what happend on the Wii, and that system is still sold out over 6 months after launch, low end graphics and all.

"Sort of" being the key word in the above statement, because the system already has the rep of being a loser, and who wants to risk investing in a $600 loser?

Claiming that upgrading the HDD to 80Gb is a substantial change is pretty stupid. Same with rumble. Neither affects the PS3 hardware in any significant way. More significant is the move to software emulation, and the whole 65nm shift. That could possibly lead to a smaller PS3 which could substantially boost sales all by itself, especially if accompanied by a smaller pricetag.

@Thomas, if you think that cutting the HDD or HDMI is a smart move you are sorely mistaken. The simple fact is the PS3 must already be close to break even if it isn't already.

See this was bound to happen this is why, early adopters and PS3 zealots are now going to look like fools. Everybody including me, only said that the PS3 in its current conception is not worth the money, and when the price drop comes everybody will pick it up.

Fanboys attacked us stating things such as 1. We are poor, 2. We are nintendo fanboys, 3. we are xbox fan boys, 4. Poor again, and last but not least 5. we are so very GAAAAAAAAAY! Fast forward a few months, and guess what sony is doing? Redesigning the PS3, who wants to bet this thing will come out above and beyong cheaper. I been gaming long enough to learn from my past mistakes, I have band wagoned systems just because and have been burnt.

Hell if you are a nintendo fan alone how many times have you picked up a new system because they added something new. You feel soar for a moment but then you go, screw it I wanted to get something cool anyway. Instead of buying one thing you get a Ds lite and get rid of your fat,it isn't that expensive to hold a grudge. Yet people who paid 600 dollars are not going to be so thrilled when that price drops drastically, hopefully they learn their lesson. In either event when sony drops their redesigned PS3 that is when the real console war starts, and not before.

Hey Zsvaior, I don't care if PS3 drops to $299 tomorrow - I still consider my $599 well spent. PS3 is a very, very nice console.

We're a loooooooong way from a proper "redesign" in the US. I don't imagine they'll bother until they can get the system down to the size of the original PS2. Along the way, though, we'll likely see "feature creep" as small changes make their way into the system:

1. Rumble controllers
2. Removal of the PS2 chipset
3. Larger hard drive (although I don't think we'll ever see the 80GB version here - 160GB seems the logical next stop)
4. Faster BD drive

But I'd be astonished to see a redesigned box earlier than 11/08.

mccomber, the PS comment is pointless, as rumble and analog sticks weren't standard when the first PlayStation came out. Sony even put them into the controller mid-console when Nintendo brought the analog stick and rumble to the N64.

I'm not sure how upping harddrive space and including new controllers is a considered a redesign. The slim PS2 was a redesign, this would just be a common sense spec increase.

The $500 ps3 didn't fail, Sony couldn't afford it. There is a HUGE difference.

I love all the "take this out and that out". LOL
So you are saying that you want Sony to strip out everything to the level and price of a 360? Just how would they sell MORE systems if they had nothing more to offer than what is in a 360?

Remember, Sony is not your whore to haggle with. You want the goods(at a reduced price of course), you pay the pimp.

Doom and gloom for PS3 every day... I love it! Sony messed this one up so badly, I want them to feel it like a kick to the balls. Crazy Ken screwed you! The PS3 needs a bunch of exclusives this fall, or it's over! 10 year plan my ass!

Again, Sony, stop wasting everyone's time worrying about price drops and redesigns and BRING OUT SOME FUCKING GAMES. Do that and the damn things'll sell themselves...

People forget that the original Playstation was released without rumble and without analog sticks. It was 1995 after all...

How soon they forget:

vidGuy, how is it pointless when it's the same deal in the end; people who were early adopters will have to buy a new controller if they want the latest and greatest version. Standard or not, it's relevant because in both cases people have to spend more money on something that is included with new "versions" of their console.
Perhaps Sony should have worked it out with Immersion in the first place and avoided this whole fiasco, but at least if they include it then people can't complain about not having it as an option, right? Then they can just continue to complain about having to pay for it, and everything else that everyone seems to enjoy bemoaning.

Why does everyone hate the Blu-Ray drive? I mean games probably are going to use all the 50 GB one day.

@60: actually, sony loses more money on a 80GB sale than on 20GB sale -- see previous posts on this very blog. I think they need to really slash their own costs -- I plan to buy one when I can get it for ~$300 used... by then, they should have released some games worth playing.
