Well i'm glad it's taking it's time. I have no way to play the game since i don't know anyone with a PS3, but the screenshots weren't anything to die for so far. Hopefully they'll ramp up the graphics a bit in-game. I expect good graphics on PS3 titles.

Wow Sony can't even keep a realease date strate, wasnt this gunna come out last year? It's all their fault because the PS3 can't handle any exclusive games without months of preparation. The only raison PS3 has games now is because they stole tem from teh xbox 360.

Why all the Raiden hate? Okay, he was an effeminate character (but in Japanese culture, he was a manly man meanwhile the cast of Gears Of War are what would be considered gayboys)) certainly. Nowhere near as bad as some other characters in gamings history. I honestly didn't mind him so much. I mean, you have an effiminate male in a game series that has such wonderful hidden things as Psycho Mantis reading your memory cards to make comment on Konami games you own, soldiers shaking rapidly as you point a fictional gun at their junk, and a rainforest... IN SOUTHERN RUSSIA!

Actually, yeah. I am. I was trying to marvel at the rain in Gears but it was a bit too planar.

With all those delays for MGS4, my interest is decreasing day by day ... Good looking graphics is not everything ... we need some fresh news about the game to wait more, news about and an innovative gameplay or something (like Ubisoft did for the next Splinter Cell), delaying without explaination is revolting ... advanced games have shown their potential with in game footage (Assasins Creed, HALO 3, ...) but this lack of info on MGS4 is worrying ... they better come with something very "Solid" or there will be no PS3 for me ...

So I guess it's safe to assume that Sony is pretty much going to write off 2007, then?

Although I gotta say...
"Metal Gear does not sell systems, sorry to break the news to you."

He might be right. MGS3 sold about half of what MGS2 did. I really wonder if MGS4 well be able to move a $600 (or even $500) dollar console all that well...

Never understood all the Raiden hate (just like I never understood all the Wind Waker hate, but that's another subject matter). He was an interesting character and allowed us to play as a rookie soldier with a different viewpoint to Snake.

Looking forward to playing as him from MGS5 and beyond.

I wasn't aware 360 had any "acclaimed original games" until Oblivion 4 months after launch (which coincidentally, was in early 2006), but please don't let me stop you from hailing PD0 for revolutionizing the FPS genre.

I wonder how much it will matter anyway. MGS3 didn't exactly set the world on fire, although it did well. The PSP games sold respectably. I'm just not seeing how MGS4 is going to be this unstoppable blockbuster once it releases.

That's not to say it won't be a great game, as I'm sure it will be, but in general it seems to be seen as a more important franchise in the west than it is in Japan. Precedent isn't leading me to believe anything there will change.

It's main competition comes in Splinter Cell, the next game of which PS3 won't be seeing. Given Splinter Cell's popularity as well, I honestly just kind of see them balancing each other out.

if MGS4 really does come out in '08 the PS3 is going to have an iffy holiday. even at a reduced price (the 360 will always be cheaper).

Sony desperately needs a big title in that holiday time frame. i'd say sit on Lair or Heavenly Sword until november but then the Sony faithful would just mutiny with so little to play this summer.

360 launched with PGR3( highly critically acclaimed)
then in early 06 Oblivion as well as GRAW came out...so thats at least 3 solid AAA, critically acclaimed orignial titles for the 360 within 4-5 months of release, and im sure im forgetting a few..

oh thats right..fight night and DOA4 came out too i think.

so, yeh. there was AAA stuff to play early in the 360 lifespan.

Guys, guys, guys. This isn't the first time I'm flamed and won't be the last. Thanks for the support and all.

@REP96st

Let me ask you this, then, if I'm so ass backwards and retarded. Every play an RPG of the Japanese variety? Ever notice how many of the leads are what western society considers "a flamer boy?" Notice the gag with Armstrong on Full Metal Alchemist? Let's just put it this way.

This is one of the sexiest men alive to females in Japan right now.
http://www.geocities.com/wasurenai_kara/gackt/in1.jpg

Now, do you think this guy could visit in the US without setting off "gaydars?"

Given Japanese mentality of "manliness" (put in quotation marks because I get annoyed by any stereotypes, really), Raiden was every bit the heart throb character that Takeshi Kaneshiro or even Dante from DMC was designed to be. In Japanese culture, Cloud Strife is butch and manly....

You could also do a search for 'razor ramone HG,' who was a hit comedian for a few months in Japan last year.

I had to go to Japan for work last year, and a few times went out with some of the kids in the company that were around my age (college grads 23~24). Several of them dressed with primarily pink (I guess dark pink) clothes, and apparently this was supposed to be normal. There was an anime fanboy in the crowd as well, but he never had the money to hang out, since he was busy saving up for the next anime figurine.

Sheppy, who cares who is manly here vs Japan? I like MGS and Gears. I could care less who is fruity or not on what continent as long as it's a good game. That being said, it really hurts not having MGS4 for my PS3 this year. As a multi-console owner, it appears that this may be -by far- the worst first year and a half of a console's life since at least the 3D0...

Boring. Snake looks tired and kinda lame with the eyepatch go hide in a box, Sam Fisher would fuck you up Snake.. Must be the whole pirates of the Carribean hype they are riding on either that or japan is really weird with their games. Not gonna sell many systems. Before you guys (SDF) assemble to attack me for massive damage (had to day it) yes I will RENT it on 360 when it eventually comes out. Only for the achievements (trophies? entitlements? whatever.) though. Yep I am a 360 fanboy. I will be until something better comes along. XBOX 720 maybe?

Sorry, Sheppy, but there are other legitimate criticisms with Raiden. Honestly, it wasn't JUST him (though a large part of it is), but it was a combo of him and other things. I'll just start the one that's right off the top of my head: Rose.

I never thought saving a game would be such a headache, but, lo and behold, we get 5-minute cutscenes of why Raiden can't share his feelings in the middle of an anti-terrorist mission. Plus, the stupid Rose can't get it through her thick skull that it's a secret-ops mission and HAS to keep using Raiden's real name throughout EVERYTHING. Raiden, buddy! Just have your woman save your game and hang up on her! Nope, he doesn't do that! He actually goes along with it like a moron! GOD... Snake is a much better main character. MUCH.

(SPOILER, but if you're in a topic 'bout MGS4, I would think you know this: True, she's just a program or something, but it's still ultra-lame that Raiden tolerated her.)

I think most of the hate came from the fact that people like Snake, people expected to play as him throughout the entire game, and people were blindsided by the fact that you had to switch. The fact that he was fruity in Western tastes just added fuel to the fire.

Thank you ChrisBo! That's exactly why I never could bring myself to finish Sons of Liberty. I loved Metal Gear Solid on the ps1, but all of that emotional drama on the codec IN THE MIDDLE OF A MISSION was just too much for me. I skipped Snake Eater and I have no desire to play the next title in line either.

Maybe I'll be missing out, yet somehow I'll survive.

Wait... umm, the reasoning you hated Raiden was because of overly elaborate and dramatic drama sequences placed in a Hideo Kojima game.... ummm, you... you KNEW this WAS a Kojima game, right?

I mean, even if you missed out on Snatcher... there was STILL MGS1. Or did you not even GET to Sniper Wolf? I mean, all people super psyched about MGS2 did play ZOE, right? I mean, Kojima is infamous for this. And breaking up and all important mission for this without worries? Don't you think having Psycho Mantis tell me "You're not supposed to have that" when he finds my Beatmania save file or "You like... castlevania, don't you?" when he finds the SOTN save doesn't break up the game? And in ZOE... hurry, Anubus is coming... but let's listen to Rose's tale of woe as she steadily, yet slowly, drifts towards the surface (read... gravity dense unsurvivable gasous mass) of Jupiter.

I mean, drama? Extensive cutscenes and overly elaborate sequences? In a Hideo Kojima game? Get the fuck out of here. I mean, it's not like Hideo Kojima is also known for his dating sim series or anything.

Not saying it's right or wrong any which way but with a MGS game, you gotta suspend believe. Such as a plane being able to pass the northern border of Afghanistan into Russia in the 70's without any issues so Big Boss can land in a rainforest... in southern Russia.

Also... in regards to the MGS4 Snake Patch... I have a feeling this is in direct relation to Big Boss in some matter.

Sheppy,
I love MGS too. MGS3 had everything you just said and I loved it. But it was done WAY TOO MUCH with Raiden. It wasn't just all these extensive cutscenes I hated (I usually like them; when they're about a character I like, which isn't Raiden), but I just wanted to save my game! The stuff with Sniper Wolf? I was expecting that stuff when I finally got to it. The stuff with Rose and Raiden? The cutscenes were SUPER LONG, even for MGS, and put in at the most inappropriate times.

For those who hated MGS2 and thus didn't pick up Snake Eater, I say: pick it up. Snake eater is much better in terms of pacing and it has a likeable main character.

OMG people ....some of you are critiszing the MGS series' strongest points = cutscenes , codec and characters ....first of all thanks to the goddamn intense and beautifully designed cutscenes is that this game was pointed out as having the best storytelling ever seen in a game , same with the codec and the best voice acting of all times! and last ...W-T-F is wrong with Raiden , he was perfect for the role(thats if yall understood what MGS2 was about), and ppl here calling him gay when he's nearly as tough as Snake himself , and im glad he back in MGS4 kicking ass

MGS isnt ment for budget gamers just looking for some headshots and blood
