PS3 firmware 1.80 to upscale your old games and DVDs [update]
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has just announced the list of features included in the PlayStation 3's 1.80 firmware update, currently scheduled for release tomorrow, May 24th, on European (Update: And American!) consoles. The downloadable update includes the following features:- 1080p upscaling for DVDs, PS2 and PS1 games. Whether or not the PS3 natively boosts the resolution of games isn't specified, but any form of upscaling should help soften the visual blows received from that fancy HDTV of yours. Upscaled DVD movies won't compare well to Blu-ray movies, but they'll tide you over until American Ninja 4 gets a release on Sony's format. Note that DVD movies can only be upconverted using an HDMI connection.
- PSP Remote Play via internet. This time it might really work! If you find yourself longing for the content on your PS3 but are unable to make it home, the PSP can display your media through the terrifying power of the internets. You'll need PSP firmware 3.5 though -- and that's not out until the end of the month.
- DLNA media center connectivity. Media content stored on DLNA-enabled PCs and laptops can be shared and viewed on PS3 systems.
- Print photos with Epson printers. Images stored on the PS3 hard drive can be printed using compatible printers.
- Enhanced save file transfer. Saved PlayStation or PlayStation 2 game files can now be transferred from the PS3 back onto a PS1/PS2 memory card via the Memory Card Adaptor.

This is an extremely welcome update. I'm a new PS3 owner (with no games), and when I first put in a PS2 game, I wretched at the poor quality of the video signal. It magically transformed all my PS2 games into PS1 games. Hopefully this update will do the trick, and do it well.
Now all we need are some games worth playing..

Ok haters. spin this negative.

Whoa. The whole library of PS1/PS2 games, along with DVDs upscaled to 1080p? I can't wait.
konajinx @ May 23rd 2007 11:11AM
Ok, why not? The PS3 needs new games and the system should have been capable of upscaling all the old stuff out of the box if the thing was actually as powerful and superior as Sony claimed, blah blah blah.
Games and a $400 price cut, and I'll buy a PS3. How's that?
DBX00 @ May 23rd 2007 11:13AM
Let's keep it coming Sony. Now I want my movie, music, and tv show store with a huge library and no DRM protection. Oh yeah, let's get additional video codec or a video conversion software on the system itself.

I guess you'll just have to wait until 2009 for that type of price; sucks to be you.

Nice Update.
Now it finally does everything the 360 does.
SNAP!
Seriously though. Kudos to PS3 owners.

I still cant believe that feature like this are in 1.8 and not a 2.0 update. With the updates woring out like this we should see 2.0 by the end of July.
konajinx @ May 23rd 2007 11:19AM
@8,
No, it doesn't suck to be me. I couldn't care less about Sony's console this time around, which is a shame because I loved both the PS1 and PS2. And I'll gladly wait until the damn thing is affordable and has a library of games worth playing. Plenty of people feel the same way. Enjoy waiting with the rest of the PS3 gamers. I'm sure it's a feeling you're more than used to by now.
JodyAnthony @ May 23rd 2007 11:20AM
sweet. That remote play thing sounds great, but I dont want to get rid of 3.40 oe-a on my psp. and I don't have an hdtv. the media center compatibility will be great though
sheppy @ May 23rd 2007 11:21AM
I never thought I would see the day a game console would add printer support. It's nice, but still suprising...
a dirty bastard @ May 23rd 2007 11:26AM
@sheppy
the ps2 had printer support via gran turismo 4

If you could care less, why comment in a PS3 firmware update thread? It isn't like its breaking news or something. I gladly pay the price of being an early adopter and don't expect 100 other million consoles to join the club in the first year. Personally, since I don't play online that much it really doesn't matter if 3 million or 30 million people own the console, the support is there and will continue to be there over the life of the console. Anyway, back to the point of the thread; good update for PS3 owners and hopefully they'll get to firmware 2.0 quickly with more options for the OS.

Tommorrow will be like christmas. With the warhawk beta and all this. Cant Wait.....
LR @ May 23rd 2007 11:27AM
Cool, now that DVD is upscaled, I don't neet to buy Blu-Ray
Theta @ May 23rd 2007 11:28AM
The upscaling is nice, but I can't help being more intrigued about the PSP connectivity. No news about game integration using that?
Matt @ May 23rd 2007 11:29AM
So how do you know if your PC is DNLA enabled?
Rob @ May 23rd 2007 11:29AM
Jody, I'm sure Dark Alex will have 3.50 oe-a out shortly after Sony updates.
Digi Smalls @ May 23rd 2007 11:30AM
does it bother anyone at all that a $600 machine is still inching its way catching up to a $400 one?

sheppy @ May 23rd 2007 11:30AM
"Tommorrow will be like christmas. With the warhawk beta and all this. Cant Wait....."
They let you know if you got in? When did they send out the alerts?
jaysins @ May 23rd 2007 11:31AM
I'm glad Sony is doing a lot of work and keeping the pressure on. Than MS releases an awesome update and then Sony responds. I love it.
JodyAnthony @ May 23rd 2007 11:31AM
heh, rob, you're probably right. I can wait four days without psp/ps3 support, heh
Fernando Rocker @ May 23rd 2007 11:32AM
What a great update! You only need a PS3 ($600), a PS2 game ($20), an HDMI Cable ($40), an HDTV with 1080p support ($2000), an Internet conection ($30 per month), a PSP ($160), and an Epson printer ($100)
What a great deal!

On the xmb go to the network setting/account management and then the transaction area (second one down). It will have the warhawk beta in there if your incuded...

Don't you have a business to run? If you were half as good at that as being a moron on Joystiq threads, you'd be a fortune 500 company by now.
TheBigFatJ @ May 23rd 2007 11:41AM
When this goes live can someone with a decent fixed-pixel HDTV please compare the PS3's DVD upscaling to your TV's built in upscaling?
According to Sony, they're using a multi-tap filter to perform the upscaling splitting the load between the RSX and the Cell. I'd be very impressed if they could match a good TV's hardware upscaling with their software solution.
Phranctoast @ May 23rd 2007 11:41AM
@26.
but if you already have that stuff, you're set....
and btw. go to monoprice.com and let me know how much a hdmi cable really cost. your estimations are off.

I'll have to check when I get home.
The Halo beta is rapidly losing it's magic. Too damn many shotty sniper matches.
David @ May 23rd 2007 11:44AM
Anyone else in the US bummed that we don't get the upscaling? Seems like Sony could throw us a bone and allow me to play PS2 games in high res.
PostScript @ May 23rd 2007 11:50AM
Uggghhhh. This is so frustrating. If you can upscale DVD, PS1 and Ps2 games to 1080p, why can't Sony release an upgrade that scales ps3 games to 1080p. (and release the firmware in the US although I am sure this one will come eventually). I am sure I am not alone in my frustration, as I have a HDtv that only supports 480p and 1080i. I would seriously consider picking up a console if they could just sort that mess out. Until then my 360 and a plethora of games will tide me over just fine.
PS Sony fanboys please do not tell me to "buy a new/better tv" -- I have an lovely 61inch TV that plays all of my 360 games and HD DVDs in 1080i no problem. I have heard that said to me before and it could be the dumbest response to a video game system flaw I have ever heard.
Joshua @ May 23rd 2007 11:50AM
Oh crap! Are we seeing the benefits of software emulation on European PS3s? Is it only "upscaling" PS1 and PS2 games, or is it actually *rendering* PS1 and PS2 games in 1080p? If it truly is rendering them in such a high reason, then I WILL buy a PS3 for this, once the rest of the world gets the European version of the system. Must get confirmation on this matter!
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 23rd 2007 11:51AM
Europe can have PS!/PS2 upscaling, I'll take the 99%+ backward compatibility we have on US models instead.
As to DVD upscaling, it doesn't make any difference. DVD is only 720x480, no matter how much you post process it. The detail was lost when the images were sampled at such a low resolution, and no math can recreated it. So I don't really give a crap about DVD upscaling either.
Upscaling from 720p to 1080i for people with CRT-based HDTVs (that don't accept 720p) is the kind of upscaling PS3 really needs most. Even though most of us don't even need that, there are a significant number of people with TVs like this that I'm sure Sony would like to be able to sell PS3s to.
Jon @ May 23rd 2007 11:53AM
This is a great update. Upscaling along is worth junking the PS2 console into the storage room forever.
Digi Smalls @ May 23rd 2007 12:02PM
PostScript,
if what BigFatJ says is true, and it's a software solution running on evenly on both Cell and RSX, then you can forget it upscaling your PS3 games.
without a hardware scaler (again $600?) the Cell and RSX are too busy running the next-gen PS3 game to upscale it in realtime too.
.
jaysins @ May 23rd 2007 12:02PM
awww fernando rocker apparently doesn't have internet seeing as that is an extra cost for him if he gets a PS3. Probably runs down to his local library just to write his insightful posts for us all.
Hiro @ May 23rd 2007 12:03PM
THE X360 DOES NOTE UPSCALE ANYTHING!!! Certainly not to 1080p. Maybe if you add an HD player...
This is a great update, I'm loving owning all the consoles and a 1080p tv sucks to be a broke bitch with nothing better to do than bitch on an internet forum about stuff you can't own.
konajinx @ May 23rd 2007 12:03PM
@16,
Because Phranctoast asked for the news to be negatively spun. My original post was meant to be tongue in cheek, hence the "blah blah blah" portion. And since this is a public forum, I figure I can post on whatever topics I like, thank you.
Seriously, though...$400 price cut and a ton of good games that aren't old PS2 titles and I'm there.
Jon @ May 23rd 2007 12:07PM
@jaysins,
That explains his rambling about having a social life the other day. Spending too much time in the library all sulked up with the librarian...
Spitkicker @ May 23rd 2007 12:11PM
As a 360 fanboy I will say updates are fantastic. This is the way to do things SONY. I don't own a PS3 (I may never) but it is great news for PS3 owners. I can only imagine the frustration of playing an old game on it and seeing it look worse. Too bad for you guys it hasn't hit the U.S. yet, fear not though you guys will eventually get it.
Ordeith @ May 23rd 2007 12:14PM
@45
The 360 has a scalar chip that the PS3 lacks.
The 360 scales everything to it's target output resolution, even 1080p if that is where you have it set.
It does this for both 360 and Xbox games on the BC list.
Digi Smalls @ May 23rd 2007 12:16PM
Hiro, X360 certainly does upscale to 1080p. must suck to be a misinformed bitch.
i have a PS3 too - didn't know you were only allowed to say good things about it.
.
Brent @ May 23rd 2007 12:27PM
Okay, so I don't really know what DLNA is all about...could somebody explain what I need to stream my music to the PS3 with this new firmware? Will I be able to do this with Orb? Is this something that only certain hardware has? Sorry, I'm usually very informed but I really know nothing about DLNA. Thanks in advance.
And by the way, I don't understand the whole "PS3 must die" attitude. Even if you love your 360, competition between the two is good for everyone, and forces both sides to up the ante in order to stay competitive. Be happy that the PS3 exists because it forces MS to make your 360 better! Just my 2 cents.
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 23rd 2007 12:28PM
The PS3 has upscaling capability. No, I wouldn't say it is as comprehensive as Xbox 360 Elite's (regular 360 fakes the horizontal part of the scaling by altering the dot clock, this is not possible on HDMI).
But Ordeith and Digi saying the PS3 can't upscale is inaccurate. Read the article months ago where Sony explained show developers should use the hardware to implement scaling.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/ps3-scaling-functionality-unearthed
Oh crap, I just looked, the original article is gone now.
Anyway, the techniques Sony said to use what the PS3 has, which is one-dimensional scaling, but the result is output in all resolutions with minimal effort.
