Hardcore racing game fans can now look forward to being slightly less completely broke when
Forza 2 is
dropped on the masses May 29th: Microsoft has slashed $20 off of the 360 Wireless Racing Wheel's price, leaving it at $129.99. It's still high enough to make your significant other mad, just probably not so high that they'd cut you in your sleep.
The game's release will also be celebrated with events June 1-3 like leaderboard tournaments, play sessions with the developers and prizes. With all this generosity, we wish a new
Forza was released every week! You know, like
Mega Man games.

Those interested should try to find a friend who has a Sams's Club (or probably Costco) membership. I got my wheel at Sam's almost 3 months ago for $119. Who knows, they may even cut the price a little lower. YMMV.

So... they dropped it down to what Amazon's had it for about 6 months now?
BadVermin @ May 25th 2007 10:35AM
If they pack it with Forza 2 or PGR4 I'd buy it at that price.

And the Logitech Driving Force Pro, with 900 degrees of steering, is only $100.

Let's say B bought Forza 2 and really sucked ass. B wants to get better at the game instead of letting it collect dust, so he buys one of those outrageously stupid car controllers. How much will B's performance improve in Forza 2 if he was to do that?

"It's still high enough to make your significant other mad..."
Got that right. Mine wanted to play the game, so the tried the demo and said she needed a wheel. When she found out how much it cost, she glared at me.
No Forza 2 for me. :(

just a note that if you get two of these you may need to call microsoft for the firmware update for the steering wheel to get both to work. the firmware update looks like a battery pack and you just plug it in and turn on the wheel. only took about 15 seconds to update the wheels but until i updated them i could only use one wheel at a time.

Oh Justin...
"It's still high enough to make your significant other mad, just probably not so high that they'd cut you in your sleep."
My girlfriend is really going to start thinking I took a penname. I use that phrase a lot.

Nate, thanks for the head's up, I was actually going to be picking up a second wheel soon (no later than when Forza 2 drops). Out of interest, how long did it take for you to receive the update from the time you called support? Thanks!
Aex @ May 25th 2007 3:22PM
Hmm, I'm torn emotionally on this. On one hand, I hear how great Forza 2 should be, and I'd love to pick in up in wait for GT 5, but, I'm not going to play Forza 2 without a wheel, and I'm not spending $130 on a proprietary wheel that is less of a wheel than the one I already have. Maybe one of these days they will learn their lesson and allow the Logitech Wheels passage through their hallowed domain, til then I'm keeping my $60 for forza2.
TiE23 @ May 25th 2007 10:29PM
I've got that wheel and it's pretty fun. I used a bunch of gift cards to get it, though, so it's hard for me to put my opinion on it's value. But it runs PGR3, Forza 2, and DIRT all fine. Especially DIRT, that demo is completely different with the wheel and a lot more fun. Should only be had by people who really like racing games, otherwise skip it unless you have a bunch of left over cash.
Nate @ May 26th 2007 8:36AM
AoE: It actually took two calls to microsoft to get it. The first call they had no idea what was going on with the problem but they knew about the problem. The second call they had the device ready and shipped it out. It took about a week or so to get and worked exactly like they said it would. I have a feeling that any wheel in stores now should have the updated firmware unless it was sitting on the shelf for a few months.
JET @ May 26th 2007 3:00PM
That wheel is garbage. I've bought nicer racing controllers for Dreamcast & PS2 for $50. The "force feedback" is little more than glorified rumble; the wheel itself provides nothing like real-world resistance. It has an overall cheap, plastic feel that I really didn't expect from 360's premier racing product.
Haven't tried the others mentioned above, but I'd start there and give MS's a miss.
