Penny Arcade Adventures game gets new trailer

The guys from Penny Arcade are truly testing the bounds of the term "meta" by featuring 3D representations of the 2D counterparts of their very 3D selves in their forthcoming game. They've also broken Joystiq's Acronymizer 3000 with its title: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One. The brand-new trailer for the game (offered first to PC Gamer readers) appears above.

We get some nice looks at the game's combat and character creation system, as well as at some of the slick 2D animation (the meta thickens!). We know that this is their first crack at a game of their own, but we're definitely laying down what they're picking up, as the kids say. Want more? This game looks really bad. Why isn't it in 2D? It would like alot better. Heck, they could even copy Paper Mario and flip between 2D and 3D.

But, if they are going to put it in 3D. They need to cel-shade more.

Well I hope they can pull it off. Despite of any flaws, it will still do rather well initally because of the fans.

there is always going to be reception problems when you go from being a reviewer to being the product reviewed.

I hope it doesn't hurt their feelings too much when people are overly harsh on the game, and i hope they continue making comics.

Mike & Jerry are good guys who (for the most part) know what gamers like. A glance at their blogs can tell you that. So I have high hopes for this game.

Regarding the appropriate acronym to use for this game, I think most publications and blogs are using "PAA" for "Penny Arcade Adventures"

The 3D looks ok, but the 2D looks amazing. With games like AH and stuff using amazing 2D, why they did not stick with that is beyond me.

This actually looks pretty damn interesting. I'm not a big fan of Penny Arcade - Tycho's vaunted ramblings are not well thought-out speech, it's just over-though gibberish for him to be misunderstood on - but I'd give this a whirl.

On one of their podcasts they said if the game is bad you'll hear it from them first. I don't think they're the kind of people that'll be blinded to how bad their game is

This looks a lot better in comparison with the first video- the 3D seems to have come a long way from the models everybody was criticising before. I might pick this one up after all.

Finally we get to see the models with their proper shading method: Cel-shading! And it looks darn good compared to the comic's art (for 3D, that is).

yes, the 3d part looks better than the last trailer, but i think that the 2D cutscenes look pretty good, i think that the game would have been much better using only 2D animation

I think the 2D parts are just going to be movie files in the game, not rendered in real-time.

Seriously, people who like Penny Arcade see the appeal in this and want to play it. People who don't like Penny Arcade are gonna think its shit no matter what. As soon as everyone realizes this we'll all be much happier.
