Wii60 survey: Wii owners less likely to buy Xbox 360
Data compiled for the MI6 game marketing conference shows off some interesting numbers concerning Wii and Xbox 360 owners and their likelihood to pick up a second console. Taken between March 20th and the 28th, the online survey questioned just under 1,900 gamers. The results are mostly unsurprising with mid-range percentages across the board. However, a large number of Xbox 360 owners (66%) admitted they might buy a Wii as a second console. This is especially interesting when compared to the number of Wii owners who would consider picking up an Xbox 360: 44%. Are Wii owners more content with their purchase, or do Xbox 360 owners just have the extra cash to throw around?
Results for PS3 owners were left mysteriously undisclosed. We'll let the anti-Sony pundits handle the flame wars for that one.

I bought a Wii, then a 360.
Jonathan @ May 25th 2007 10:39AM
Why didn't they ask the likelihood of Wii owners buying a PS3? Considering PS3 and 360 are in direct competition.
amx1978 @ May 25th 2007 11:12AM
I've had a Wii since launch. I bought my first 360 a week ago. I love my Wii, but it's nice to have an alternative.
tituspullo @ May 25th 2007 10:40AM
360 then a Wii here. PS3, when the price is about 300 maybe then.
Jack of No Trades @ May 25th 2007 10:40AM
This will be fun....
If you bought a Wii for your primary console than your either:
A: Broke and can't afford next gen.
B: Love Mario way too much.
C: Intent with a lesser quality of games.
D: Can't use a traditional controller.
E: Can't play complexed games since you have the attention capacity of a small child.
F: A female.
G: B thru F.
*I think its G*
LBSUTKE @ May 25th 2007 4:05PM
Generally (please keep my first statement in mind) a wii owner is not looking for a system that is a hard core gaming system, and therefore would not be interested in buying a 360 (or ps3 for that matter). But a 360 owner would more than likely be more of a intense or hard core gamer so picking up a second or 3 console would not be that much of a stretch. So the results do not surprise me that much.
Plus if you look at results from surveys long enough you can make your own conclusion what every you want it to be.

I have a 360 and am sorry i bought a wii, that thing gets very boring fast, and is just collecting dust. The wii controller was just a gimmick.
polly @ May 25th 2007 10:46AM
When GTA 4 comes out, the Wii owners will have some soul searching to do.
Jonathan Tran @ May 25th 2007 10:47AM

I bought a Wii because my PC can and does run most 360/PS3 games, and I already get "free online play" so why bother buying something that's just a PC in a giant overheating shell?
I got a Wii because it was not a large investment, and I knew it would have games that would never come to PC (or have copycats). I can always play "Random FPS" or "super realistic racing sim 2" on PC, but doubt I will play Trauma Center or Smash Bros on PC anytime soon.
Mats @ May 25th 2007 10:49AM
I have a Wii, and would not buy a 360, but then I have a PC, one of those PC's that "cost to much" "are to complex to use" "require that you put money into it each year to keep it up to date" and "gives better looking games then 360"
Jeff @ May 25th 2007 10:49AM
I've owned a 360 since launch and bought a Wii about two weeks after launch (owned a ps3 too but that got sold off, at a higher price, about a week after i bought it; because I think it sucks.) but I only bought the Wii because it's cheap(er) than the competition and I fell for the gimmicky gameplay.
Lately, as in the past month or two, it's collecting dust and functions as a 2nd rate internet browser. I like it but I can't get into any of the game like I can with the 360. I imagine a lot of the 360 owners willing to buy a Wii think along the same lines.
"Are Wii owners more content with their purchase, or do Xbox 360 owners just have the extra cash to throw around?"
Perhaps Wii owners are dissatisfied with their purchase and that dissuades them from investing in another, more expensive, console.
I can attest for myself in saying I'd gladly pay twice what I did for the 360 whereas I feel some slight buyer's remorse over my Wii. I know that in time it's library will improve though so I'm not that worried.

I'm actully suprised that people ren't going the PSWii route I'm looking at... I have a Wii now, am looking at upgrading my TV soon, and when I can save some more $$ will pick up a PS2. The library of games is already there, and it's cheaper than picking up a new current gen console. Besides, I think PSWii sounds better than Wii60 :-)
cc123 @ May 25th 2007 10:56AM
I have all three systems. Got them at about the same time in November '06. Even though the ps3 and 360 are much more expensive it's the $250 I spent on the Wii that bothers me cause I feel like Nintendo blatantly ripped me off.
You can add me to the list of suckers that fell for all the Wii hype that blogs and mags created.
PS> Please don't tell my friends I own a Wii.
megaStryke @ May 25th 2007 10:57AM
I bought the Wii because it gets me 'tang.
...
...
Yeah, that's a lie.
Bambino @ May 25th 2007 11:00AM
@ Jack of No Trades:
Hmmm... Have you ever played a Wii game? I'm guessing you haven't, because it doesn't have a "traditional controller". Trying to "understand" how the Controller and Nunchuck combination works is, perhaps, a feat too complex for you to be able to do. You do know that the Wii controller is, although a bit weird and takes a while to get used to, a traditional controller put to non-traditional uses? Get used to the facts.
@ polly:
Why would they? GTA has never been around for any Nintendo console. Why the need to run, grab a car and kill people if you can run, point, shoot, and kill people?
To each their tastes.
I am not saying I dislike the 360 though, I like it a lot. The only thing Microsoft ever does right without thinking about it are video games, controllers (except, perhaps, the first controller available for Xbox and all controllers that looked like it, even though they function perfectly!), mice, and keyboards. That's about it.
Fernando Rocker @ May 25th 2007 10:58AM
Jack is jealous cause he cant find a Wii in any store... poor child.
JodyAnthony @ May 25th 2007 10:59AM
I bought a wii because I enjoy playing fun games. Same reason I buy any console.
Keeko_ca @ May 25th 2007 11:00AM
I bought a 360, then a Wii.
All you Wii haters really should step down. It's really not funny anymore.
I personally LOVE the Wii. When friends or family come over, it's all we play. I'm starting to think most Wii haters really don't have anyone to play with...and that's sad. If that's your case, then why do you have a Wii to begin with? It really isn't meant to be played solo in my opinion. That's what the Xbox is for.
If you are a loner, (no insults here, I'm alone at time too!) then the 360 is amazingly awesome. The Xbox LIVE structure really only pales in comparison to actual people in the room with you. It's what I LOVE about Xbox LIVE. Playing over a headset really is just like having friends over to play.
Avinash_Tyagi @ May 25th 2007 11:12AM
I think its because most Wii owners realize that a PC is a better choice than a 360 or a PS3, plus you can get your games for free on the PC
Theta @ May 25th 2007 11:00AM

It's called "People who buy a 360 are more likely to be able to afford a Wii (since Wii+360 = price of PS3)". People who buy a Wii are often people who want to spend as little money as possible, and are not interested in a second console.
XGamerX @ May 25th 2007 11:01AM
If I had a choice I would rather go to PS3 than a 360. Just because I never had any problems with my previous playstation consoles.

Umm, Jack to whom Trades have been Withheld,
Forgive me for pointing this out, but is point C supposed to be, "Content with a lesser quality of game," or "Content with lesser quality games." I'm not trying to be a smartass, jackass, or any combination where ass is a prefix or suffix; I'm merely a linguophile.
Have a nice day.

PS- I am well aware that linguophile is not a real word and/or spelled incorrectly.

I went the PSWii60 route with a PC to boot. Suck it.
farmok @ May 25th 2007 11:07AM
Here is another thought on these numbers. Considering the ammount of people that are first time consol buyers, the untapped market nintendo is targeting. The would not feel the need to buy a second consol. They would probably stick with one and thats it. 360 owners though would fall into the more hardcore demographic and could see the potential of the wii giving them something different (although i'm sure there are many dissapointments there). The are the ones who buy multiple consols and probably don't want to throw $600 for one after spending $400. I'm also sure you would see the same from the PS3 crowd, except they don't have any more money left to spend.
Fernando Rocker @ May 25th 2007 11:07AM
Wii60... the best choice... PS3 doesnt offer nothing that the Wii60 can offer...
cc123 @ May 25th 2007 11:07AM

Most Wii owners couldn't afford the video card of a good gaming rig, let alone the rest of the computer.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ May 25th 2007 11:07AM
"E: Can't play complexed games since you have the attention capacity of a small child."
Or have came home from 10+ hours of office space.
Or have emptied two bottles of beer/glasses of whisky.
And BTW, kids have *enormous* attention capacity, since their brains are still developing can consume at once huge amounts of information. Adult brains on other side already filled with stereotypes and cliches and often reject new information.
So leaving out "small child" who got here unknowingly we have (with minor typo corrections):
"E: Can't play complex games since one has attention capacity of a drunken or employed person after work."
megaStryke @ May 25th 2007 11:09AM
Jack doesn't pretend to be a caring and modest man. He tells ya that the Wii is trash, but its suitable enough for his girl. It could just be that Jack doesn't think his girl deserves the best, but I like to think that she's a masochist who enjoys an experience that's a bit "rough around the edges," if you catch my drift. When not in use, Jack's girlfriend's Wii is hung up right next to the cat o' nine tails and the hot wax.
Magus @ May 25th 2007 11:26AM
As a launch-day Wii owner, I'll definitely be buying an Xbox 360:
Blue Dragon, Cry On, (maybe) Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, and perhaps Halo 3.
That said, it's no surprise that many Wii owners won't be buying an Xbox 360 because Nintendo has successfully expanded the marketplace, so a significant portion of Wii owners are enjoying video games for the first time and wouldn't be inclined to buy something as "hardcore" as the Xbox 360 (or PS3, for that matter).
3cubedminus3squared @ May 25th 2007 11:11AM
I have a 360 and will later purchase a Wii.
I always get a Nintendo system after I buy a main console because Nintendo games are FUN.
most 360 games are good by yourself but after that and online gets boring, not so much.

Actually many of us have plenty of money to throw around, it comes from not spending money on pointless purchases like game consoles that aren't worth their weight in salt.

The Wii is to 360/PS3 trolls as holy water is to vampires.
Anam @ May 25th 2007 11:19AM
Personally, I bought a Wii for three reasons:
1. Virtual Console. I love old nintendo and sega games and since most of my old consoles don't work anymore, this feature alone justified my purchase.
2. Letting the industry know that I will pay for them to try something different. Even though I admit that the wiimote is not the greatest piece of technology in the world, it is, in my opinion, a step in the right direction. I want the industry to know that I'd rather have games that play different than look different. Hopefully this will lead Microsoft and Sony to try to think differently on their next consoles.
3. Cost. Yes, I could afford a 360. Yes, I could even afford a PS3, but that's not the point. The point is that I know that most consoles are bought by parents. Parents care about price. Parents will buy the Wii. Price sells consoles and game companies want to put their games on the best selling consoles. If the Wii continues to sell this well, every third-party company will want in on the action, and that means waves of games for the Wii. Yes, most will be crap. But there are some really great companies out there that will make something great for it when they see it's so successful.
To be perfectly honest, I'm more hyped about the 360 than the Wii (specifically Lost Odyssey and the Xbox Live Arcade feature). I'll buy a 360 next, but probably wait for a price drop, which I believe will happen this year or early next year.
The only thing on the PS3 that I want is LittleBigPlanet, but that doesn't justify a $600 purchase in my book.
Martin Austin @ May 25th 2007 11:15AM
So it's like a tampon, with the safety removal string and all?
On topic: I first had the Wii, and will be getting a 360 this weekend. So maybe the percent should be 44.00001%
TravistyOJ @ May 25th 2007 11:15AM
This is more simple than you are making it out to be. Chances are your secondary console will cost LESS than your primary console. So if you own a 360, shelling out $250 more bucks is much easier than the opposite: Shelling out $400 on another console, when you bought the first one for $250.
Farseer @ May 25th 2007 11:16AM
I have a Wii and a 360 (plus many legacy consoles, of course). As an early adapter, I remember when I got my 360 on launch day. I actually had to wait months for a game I wanted to be released for it, and did I stop playing my PS2 and NGC in the meantime? Hell no; both of those machines got more use than the 360 then.
I've had a Wii since launch, and didn't have to wait a day to play 2 games I was interested in. When freinds come over, the Wii is still a big hit, just with Wii Sports!
Granted, I play my 360 more than any other console at this time because there are so many good games, but there were none worth playing for a long time.
I'm looking forward to the potential of the Wii at this time next year. I may eat my words, but hell, I'm only out a couple of hundred bucks if that's the case.
JodyAnthony @ May 25th 2007 11:16AM
"And BTW, kids have *enormous* attention capacity, since their brains are still developing can consume at once huge amounts of information. Adult brains on other side already filled with stereotypes and cliches and often reject new information."
When I was a kid I finished all the ultima games, I played rpgs CONSTANTLY. Today, I can barely get through 20 hours of the same game.
Vidikron @ May 25th 2007 11:16AM
The correct answers are the price and motion controls. A percentage of people that bought the Wii did so because that's all they could afford. Then you have another group that are either first time buyers or people who left console a while back, but are intrigued by the Wiimote. There is no mystery here guys.
megaStryke @ May 25th 2007 11:17AM
