he's not completly emo... not peter parker emo at least. The hair doesnt fall completly over one eye, and its not gelled and dyed either. And wheres that emo scrawneyness? Right now he's just a scruffy dude with a nicer than normal haircut blowing up hotdog stands :p

He's much more rogue Jack Bauer than he is emo. Which surely can only be a good thing.

You can't really see it in the video but Sam really IS crying as he's tossing tables at people. Cry more, Fisher!

At least he isn't Nomura style emo. Anyway the new Assassin's Creed style gameplay sounds promising and I would definitely check it out (skipped the last two).

I'd say his look leans more towards hobo than emo... Perhaps almost hobocore.

On an unrelated note, Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3 wasn't emo at all. He was flat out mean. More hipster than emo for sure.

I'm not sure where this whole emo thing is coming from. He doesn't look emo to me at all. He looks more like a street person, or a slightly 'hip' adult. In short, someone you probably wouldn't look twice if you're looking for a spy.

Also, as I've said before, the spy being abandoned by his agency and going it alone to clear his name is a key part of any spy story, so I don't think this is totally unexpected, it just moves the series forward in it's genre.

RE: Duncan

He's meanmo, not hobocore. You're getting your sub-sub-genres confused.

Sincerly, I don't see how people see an emo in Sam Fisher. He doesn't look emo at all...

I also figured the look more for hobo/homeless than emo, but then again I couldn't really understand why people were freaking out so badly about the series evolving at all.

It's not like he's cel-shaded...

As long as the Shanghai studio doesn't touch this one it should be a fine game that brings in some much needed innovation. Although I would like to know who these so called "fans" are that Ubisoft refers to, focus testing me thinks.

So if I don't buy this one...maybe the next one will be a real Splinter Cell game?... I'll rent it, though. I'd be a schmuck if I didn't at least try it.

I think that this new direction could be interesting. I am pretty sick of the Splinter Cell formula so a change can't hurt. I am also getting sick of Sam. I say the next Splinter Cell game after this one should ditch Sam and jump forward in time to the EndWar time period and a new lead character.

I have to agree, Sam looks like a hobo, not emo.
And besides, it's always been my dream to play a game with a Die Hard-esque setup as a homeless man, and Conviction is the closest thing mankind will ever get to that dream.

I actually like this new change... I just hate that it isn't gonna come out for PS3. I don't have a 360.

Frustrating. Indeed.

20 odd comments in and not a single comment about what platform this game is, or isn't, coming out for. Not a whisper of "but Ubisoft said blah blah couldn't run it because of blah blah"?

Not a twig of flamebait?

Oh Joystiq-ers, how you disappoint me ;)

People cry for innovation and then they cry when they get it. We've got 4 identical Splinter Cells so far, why the hell would we need a 5th. I'm glad they are changing things up a bit.

The reason there's a lot of concern for the franchise is the Ubisoft has exploited the **** out of it - with basically a new game every year or so since 2002 when the series launched. They milk their franchises dry, rip any sense of story or continuity out of the plot lines (because there is none) and then exagerate the significance of the changes that do occur.

I've bought all four Splinter Cell games do date, and number 1 and 3 were great, numbers 2 and 4 sucked. I understand that there's different studios working on them, and that there's a corelation between the games I like and the Montreal vs. Shanghai studios - BUT - I'm still pissed off at the fact that Ubisoft decided to milk the franchise with two shoddy games rammed in between the two "real games".

The ironic thing is - they would have made more money if they never released games 2 and 4. Check out how Bungie's doing...

You know what? If Mathieu Ferland made Chaos Theory, which was the best of the Splinter Cell series in my opinion, then I will put my faith in whatever he does with the Splinter Cell series! Double Agent was a disaster not because it was too easy, but because the AI could do cheap things like shoot at you through walls. Bugs killed that game.
