Ubisoft president 'still considering' EA acquisition
Ubisoft co-founder and president Yves Guillemot has stated that the publisher is "still considering" its relationship with Electronic Arts, who has since 2004 owned 20% of the company's stock, a move that many felt would lead to a hostile takeover but has never materialized as such.In an interview with Gamasutra, Guillemot commented that "we're still considering" in response to EA still showing interest in buying the publisher. "The first option for us is to manage our own company and grow it. The second option is to work with the movie industry, and the third is to merge," he said. "We think the market is going to grow fast, and we can take a big share of that market, so we don't have to change the way things are done at the moment."
EA CCO Bing Gordon, in another Gamasutra interview conducted recently said that "I think everybody is for sale. I think in general, successful intellectual properties in all media are undervalued, especially in our media ... There's been a lot of acquisitions, but the thing about acquisitions is that the only time it works is if you've got an intellectual property that can succeed without the people, or if the people have a ten-year career path that they're interested in at EA."
Both Gordon and Guillemot's words indicate that any changes in business may not be in the cards for the near future. EA acquiring Ubisoft is one of the largest rumorangs in recorded history; it takes 42 men just to get it off the ground. (Har, har.) The speculation hasn't been helped by Guillemot, who has previously asserted that he would consider a takeover if the price was right.

That would suck.

"Obviously we would have to start making PS3 games if EA bought us out, so it's a tough decision. Be stubborn and not play nice, or make more money and have games on every platform under the sun?"
Hope they get their act together before EA buys them. The only reason I say this is because the opening Ubisoft logo thing before their games is a lot let annoying than EA's, and usually skippable.

I definitely do not want to see this happen.
Ten years ago, though, who would have imagined that UbiSoft would be where they are today? With all of the Tom Clancy titles, Prince of Persia, etc., they've gone from being "that French company that makes Rayman" to a hell of a lot more.

This would be horrible for gamers and the industry. Ubisoft has delivered some of the better games and hasn't been afraid to try something new. EA on the other had has become know for horrible licensed games and yearly revamps of sports games. Being that Ubisoft is a major French company I don't think its oversight organizations would let a EA buy out fly.

OrganicShadow pretty much summed it up for me. Forget EA! EA is the AT&T of the world. (poor cingular for getting eatin' by it's former master agian) Horrible in many ways. A monopoly/power hungry company. We can always rely on the AT&T monopoly to be split up agian, but law makers don't care about the video game industry. EA might end up eating everything up. That's a shame.

Oh, EA. Who won't you try to buy?
Next week's news:
-EA tries to buy Konami
-EA tries to buy Sega Sammy
-EA tries to buy Square-Enix
-EA tries to buy Namco Bandai
-EA tries to buy Atari
-EA tries to buy Capcom
ETC...

Whole industry falls to pieces.

I absolutely HATE EA...
all things EA...all of their licensed games are crap including the "next gen" Madden games. The last time EA started to lose money was back in 2004, and then they bought out the NFL license and have never been taken since...
Ubisoft makes quality games most of the time, and EA buy out would send them (and possible the entire industry) down the drain.

"the thing about acquisitions is that the only time it works is if you've got an intellectual property that can succeed without the people"
That's the part that bothers me. If an IP ever outgrows the people who made it, then it's time for retirement. "Jumping the shark" as it were.
Roflgoat @ May 29th 2007 5:14PM
NO!
EA is evil but has great games, but Ubisoft is marginally less evil, but has some real gems.
This would cause EA to have all of the non-indie good games! They would get more evil.... It's the GREED, I'm telling you, the GREED!
samfish @ May 29th 2007 5:38PM
The only acquisition I want to see is Nintendo buying up Seeds.
Other than that little bit of hypocrisy, I'm completely opposed to acquisitions and mergers, including this.
Ken @ May 29th 2007 5:42PM
I hope this doesn't happen. The gaming industry will collapse on itself with shitty games.
(Godfather is the only exception, because it's amazing on the Wii!)
Pushtrak @ May 29th 2007 6:21PM
I thought ages back, they said they'd never let something like this happen.
Rubang B @ May 29th 2007 6:36PM
How about insted of teasing us with BS merger rumors you just make a Beyond Good and Evil sequel, eh?
AndrewNeo @ May 29th 2007 7:05PM
This is why I'm glad Valve is independent.
Johan Krger-Haglert @ May 29th 2007 8:53PM
Please no.

Valve isn't independent. I'm sure we all remember that code theft that delayed HL2 for a long time. While that was marginally true, Vivendi, who owns Valve, had disputes with Valve over who would get what and was the majority of the delay of HL2.
Sean @ May 29th 2007 11:52PM
The second least imaginative game development company buying out the least imaginative game development company... it's going to be a dry dry world of video gaming.
Rubang B @ May 30th 2007 1:28AM
Vivendi doesn't own Valve. They published Valve's games (both of them), until they started giving out free copies to LAN cafes and pocketing all the money themselves behind Valve's back. Valve sued them, Vivendi countersued for Valve for using Steam to cut them out of the cash loop, and Valve won a shitload of money. Since then EA has been distributing Valve's games. EA has their fingers in everything. It's gross.
BiggerBoat @ May 30th 2007 5:56AM
From the perspective of a Wii owner I think they're about just as bad as each other. Actually thought EA was pulling ahead in terms of quality until I played Tiger which runs like a laggy PS2 game. Hopefully the fact that both are making truck loads of cash from Wii they'll start making games which have a budget exceeding 5 bucks.
