From the "If It Ain't Broke, Change It" department comes these first videos of Guitar Hero III, which were posted, then apparently pulled by IGN. We believe these are from the 360 version, but the quality is low enough that it's probably a moot point. As you can see, the HUD has been completely revamped, with lights replacing the Star Power meter and a new chain counter that tells you how many notes you've hit in a row. According to this IGN feature, the timing has also been changed, which may explain the early Wyld Stallyns-level performance in the videos.
It's hard to blame the team from Neversoft if the game's playing a little differently at the moment, as they didn't have access to the code (created by Harmonix) from the original two games. Besides, there's still time for tweaking. Feel free to express your rage at the ever-progressing march of time (and rock out to some Foghat), right after the jump.
I believe that the "lights" that designate your star power are supposed to be little vacuum tubes, like those in a tube amp (although those usually glow orange and not blue), so that's a cool little change.
I would also have to agree with whoever said that the guys have an 80's flair about them, and that this is more likely video from the 80s edition of guitar hero. Slow Ride = '78, so that's pretty close I guess.
But yeah, its Guitar Hero, so I (and I'm sure many more) will buy it. They changed the HUD, who cares? Is that why you play Guitar Hero? For the HUD?
Looks great, I can't wait. Pwns rockband already and doesn't cost $400+. I hope the timings are good in online multiplayer. When is the GH2 pdeal coming out? When will they release the rest of the song packs for GH2? Why am I asking questions?
One reason that I never liked Guitar Hero, besides the fact that i play real guitar and own, is the harmonic noises that it makes when you mess up, and how unsteady the music feels after it, almost choppy. If Neversoft ever decides to get rid of that noise, and fixes up the strumming bar, THEN i'll consider it.
Jesus, you guys will complain about ANYTHING. It looks exactly the same, save for some minor aesthetic differences. Are you guys seriously that concerned about how tell the fret markers are and whether the star power indicator is a guage or a set of bars? Christ. I'd hate to live with any of you guys, you'd nitpick every little thing anyone did.

L. O. L.
There's barely any info on Rock Band yet. If anything, the little information available for Rock Band pwns GHIII already. At least Rock Band won't have any lame covers at all.
Is it just me or was that Weezer playing their own song on GHIII?
I've never played the series, so I don't know. I thought all the GH tracks were re-recorded bysoundalikes and not the original song by the original artist, was I wrong? Is this a new wrinkle in the GH franchise or just a really good soundalike?
You can't go blaming Treyarch if GHIII isnt what you expect. Cry to Neversoft all you want though. I think this looks good for being an early build. Oh, and the IGN dude playing clearly just sucks.
Off topic... but did anyone read their Forza review. Written by monkeys. It's the IGN way. Viva la Joystiq!
Looks interesting, the only thing that bothers me is that supposedly the old guitars won't work anymore? Wow, sure am glad that I shelled out before...
