Considering the doom 3 engine wasn't the shiznit id made it out to be, I won't be holding my breath.

A new engine? Is there room for a new engine in the industry? I say UT3 already won this war. Wait a couple years and release something a lot better. The Doom 3 engine isn't even really THAT old

We don't even get a hint?

@ Crono (#1):

It was relatively revolutionary at the time, though. For a very short time, that is. It just got surpassed by other games/engines really quickly. It's amazing to think about how far games have advanced in just the past few years.

I think it's amazing how long the Quake 3 engine lasted. Wasn't COD2 based on it or am I just completely crazy?

@2
So, a Q4 2007 engine has already beaten a 2008 (unlikely) or 2009 (more likely) engine that you've never even seen a SS of?

I wish I had your conviction. Oh wait, no I don't.

UT3 Engine is Q4 2006 (Gears of War).

John Carmack is still god no matter what people say. Doom 3 was a solid game and the graphics were killer it just wasn't as universal as the Quake 3 engine. id's games typically have a more realistic look than their competition (possibly their method of lighting). I hope they go back to their multiplayer roots again and make sure the modding community is kept busy.

Too many good engines out there these days.

U3 engine, Crytek2 engine, and the up and coming Project Offset engine(real name?).

John had better do freaking MAGIC in his new engine to wow me against the above stated like DOOM 3 wowed me compared to its competition back in the day....3 years ago.

I look at Crysis videos and I crap my pants...How much more "real" can they possibly get within the constraints of current hardware. We don't have 80 core processors yet John.

Developers make there own engine so they can:

A)Not pay a license fee
B)Maybe make money off of license fees

Carmack will never say, this is a better engine than I could make so let's use this. He has done a lot of magic in the past. i don't doubt he will wow us again.

Why is there still this huge feeling from a certain demographic that highly view Carmack as some sort of Technical wizard?
What was the last game he was attached to that was a huge massive success? Seems like just another western "ME MAKEM BUMPY AND SHINEY AND GOREY HUR HUR HUR" kind of guys to me, and always will.

The doom3 engine was completely revolutionary at the time that it was first shown. Too bad Doom3 was delayed too close to the half life 2 release or it would have had a much better shelf life. I am interested in seeing what they did for quake wars. Changing the doom3 engine to work in large out door environments had to be crazy. BTW Carmack is always on the bleeding edge. Problem is once one person does something to innovate it is documented and any dumb ass can do it.

Otis: Doom 3 was not a *massive* commercial hit (though it certainly sold VERY well). But that's not the bar by which us technical people judge the engine. The engine was, bar none, the single biggest leap forward in technology in the last few years. Carmack changed the entire development mindset from that of diffuse and lightmapping into one of pixel shaders up the fricking wazoo, all of which are derived from the normal mapping originally implemented in Doom 3.

Carmack *is* a technical wizard, and I look forward to his new engine with great interest.

Crono, do you realize that graphics engines today wouldn't be like they are without the Doom 3 engine then? The Doom 3 engine was the first to use per pixel shading, and this was a MAJOR step in lighting and shading in graphical engines. Many new engines use the technique used in Doom 3's engine as a base for their shading.

Not to mention that the graphics (at the time) were absolutely stellar and even look great still today.

I don't think you know much about this subject, so I'll just stop here.

Ah DOOM3 the movie that was a game...or was it a game that was a movie...point is it sucked the story was alright but the core of the gameplay off quake 2 is the last great ID game.

ID has become the new Disney take a old property wape it and change it into something its not or at the least change it to a water down simplistic contemporary fly by night version of itself.

ID has pretty much killed Doom and offed Quake 4 Wolfenstine was not so bad but I think they put it back in their "vault" to bring out in 4 or 6 years...I really have no interest in what a bunch of contemporary hacks hobble together the same goes for epic the last set of unreal games have been a joke(U2-o3-04).

"Id Software is working on a new game ... and it's not Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein or even Commander Keen related -- it's new."

That was already announced about two years ago. This is information is not even slightly new.

Well, if Carmack is STILL going openGL, they BETTER outperform the Crysis DX10 magic.

But if they are just making a cutesy platformer in the style of Commander Keen then I'll accept a lot more. >:3
