Tomb Raider and Anniversary comparison video
Next week sees the release of Tomb Raider: Anniversary, where Lady Croft goes to the salon and fixes her roots. The video above shows the transformation of the original Tomb Raider into Anniversary. Tomb Raider: Legend (now playable for free on GameTap) reawakened the joy for many in Tomb Raider and reinvigorated the franchise. We're hoping that Anniversary is a fitting tribute to the original but, and this was part of the design behind Anniversary, puts some modern concepts into the gameplay for gamers who are just joining the series post Legend.
We're definitely looking forward to E3 and seeing how far along the Tomb Raider: Legend sequel is. Although not half as painful of a cliffhanger as Halo 2, the ending to Legend (which came about 8 hours too early) was excellent and we were ready to put down the cash for the sequel right there. If Anniversary continues the solid gameplay trend of the new Lara Croft, the future looks bright again for the series.

The PSX one looks better, you can even see the pixels!

There are more polygons in her boobs in the new version than were on her entire body in the old version. Job well done.... boobs.

It's just Tomb Raider with better grafix. Where's the innovation?
ComradeTrotskii @ May 31st 2007 9:53PM
Where is my 360 version though?

Hash and rehash, when will dev start designing new games from scratch.
ALH @ May 31st 2007 10:13PM
is it wrong that despite the blockyness i still really like how crisp the original game looks? a lot of textures are far too desaturated nowadays, while that helps with realism..damn..i miss going into a world and seeing some lovely vivid hues. Its surprising to find out how many people seem to think that saturated!=real.
also, BLOOOOOOOOM

the 360 tomb raider game was much better. i wish they made this for the 360. the graphics difference would've been sooo much better. ps1 to ps2 is kinda more ps1 to ps1.5

I think this game is a great idea, and one that I was hoping for. The original Tomb Raider is one of the best adventure games of all time...stuck in early PS1 graphics. If any game is deserving of a remake, this is one of them. Also, since when does a game have to have innovation? Half the new games that come out don't innovate...at least this is a GOOD game. Not only that, it is not just a remake, they are redoing the gameplay in the same vein as TR Legend so it plays AND looks better than the original, along with new puzzles and new environments. It is not a cut and paste remake here. I just wish it was on 360.

Personally, I wish they had stuck with the Angel of Darkness design for Lara. I was so mad when I saw Legend; they shrank her boobs and cut her hair. *And* then I found out they changed her background. Needless to say I have yet to play Legends yet.
I want my Lara dark and sexy, not looking like she belongs on the cheerleading squad.

@ Meowzers:
I wouldn't waste my time with Tomb Raider: Legend. It's the only game I can remember ever taking back to Wal-Mart without there being something actually wrong with it. I was just really turned off by it =[.
Not physically.. I mean it just wasn't fun.
Meowzers @ Jun 1st 2007 12:27AM
Thanks for the advice, Rare Hare. I'm sure eventually I'll get it, so I can complete the collection. If anything, I'll play it just because it *looks* awesome. Hell, that was the main reason why I got Angel of Darkness.

come on tomb raider legend was a great game...it seemed to put the series back on track..and played more like the old ones did....granted i am a huge tomb raider fab....
chenry @ Jun 1st 2007 1:15AM
actually looks pretty good for PS2.
Lord Chako @ Jun 1st 2007 1:20AM
Since when did wal-mart (or any retailer) accept returns on opened games? Unless you are exchanging it for the exact same game, it violates copyright laws.
Also, I should have specified, but my previous comment was sarcasm.

I felt the same way when i downloaded the demo, i was gutted that lara had changed from a silent dignified woman of class so some sassy ho with too much money and a big group of friends shouting in her ear every 5 minutes- the techno music starting up whenever a battle arrived and the fact that the fioghts werent against monkeys or T-rexes made me instantly dislike it too.
Then, for some reason, i decided to buy it. Its not the same as the old games- but its still a lot of fun, and the action sequences are pretty damn epic. Swinging from rooftop to rooftop taking out mercenaries in the peru level made me giddy with joy :D
rDr4g0n @ Jun 1st 2007 9:10AM
havent played a good tomb raider since part 2... i wish they would have showed more comparison shots of familiar areas in the game... like the trex lost jungle place! that place freaked me out so much!
t_m @ Jun 1st 2007 10:00AM
Its weird that in, what, 11 years, the graphics don't actually look THAT different... ..at least not at the resolution that video is at.
Sure, they are improved, but shown side by side like that its nothing revolutionary. I could imagine quite happily playing the original NOW and getting just as immersed as i would in the remake.
Still, be interested to see the new T-Rex. (!)
I actually liked the original concept designs of lara for Legend.. where they made her look much more like a real HUMAN GIRL in terms of proportions.. shame that they chickened out nad boosted her boobs again...
Selfcon @ Jun 1st 2007 11:59AM
Wow, I didn't think that many people liked legend. I rented it from gamefly on the 360, beat it, and thought it was okay but by no means great. Now if you're judging it by how bad the series has been for while, then I think you have tiny bit of ground to stand on. I personally found it to be nothing more than a half-assed Prince of Persia clone with guns and a mediocre story. It was good start, but they'll have to do a lot more to get me to actually BUY one of these games.
Dustin @ Jun 1st 2007 7:04PM
I don't remember Tomb Raider ever looking that bad...
Then again, I would never touch the PS so I played all of my Tomb Raiders on the PC.
