Ken's looking good for new HD Street Fighter II
This is Ken, you may recognize him from such games as ... well, almost every version of Street Fighter ever. Capcom released this image of how Ken will look in the upcoming Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for XBLA and PSN. Anybody who purchased the other Street Fighter II game on XBLA feel ripped off? Yeah, us too.
The new look is thanks to Udon Comics and we can't wait to see this thing in motion. Capcom will be releasing new images of the re-drawn sprites over time leading up to the release of SFIITHDR at some indeterminate point in the future. We have no doubt that this game is going to be gorgeous, we're just hoping the controls feel "right" using the Xbox 360 and PS3 controller.

what's next? Capcom claiming they spent 23 million dollars making this game?

I thought the exact same thing and then thought "Ooh Cammy too!". Out loud. At work. Around coworkers.
They just kinda ignored me. I think they've grown to expect this sort of thing from me.

Uh no that isn't it. We spent money on it and now a better version is coming out.

Either way, I'll buy it. There's nothing like paying for the same thing 6 times over. :)

I recently had a chance to play Arcana Heart, and it's sharp, clean 2D graphics made the other 2D fighters in the arcade look absolutely pathetic. If you're judging 2D fighters based on NeoGeo-ero titles, look again.

-Capcom will never make Street Fighter IV, they'll just continue milking every other game they've ever created for all eternity. OR they WILL make Street Fighter IV, but they'll make it 3D because [they'll say] "2D doesn't sell" (BS) and it'll be worse than any one of the EX series games before it.-
...deep breath...and...continue on with life.

The animators will be added more frames of animation as well. The creator said that this will cause lon-time fans to have to "re-learn" the games because of the added frames. I am looking forward to this since we never got the crappy version that the XBLA got.

3D isn't everything. Have you played the street fighter games that are in 3D? Pure shit.
Some games should just remain in 2D like, Sonic, Castlevania, King of Fighters, etc.
An yes, i'm one of those people that say, graphics aren't everything.
Ok, everyone flame me now.

Guilty Gear is the King of the 2d fighters. They should make all 2D fighters like that.

Remember that drawing of Capitan America by Rob Liefeld where someone Photoshopped his clothes off (bear with me, here) to show how distorted he'd look because that's how absurdly bad Liefeld is?
And his penis would have been about the size of a penny?
That's probably what Ken is sportin', too.

That would have been Clover.

you've just described basically every company that's been around since the NES days
Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom, Namco, everyone

Sorry, I'm still burnt I bought Capcom Vs. SNK 2 for Xbox so I could play on live, but the damned controller made it impossible.

Personally I don't see the need for a SF4. What would it bring?
New characters? It's been done.
Better graphics? It's been done.
New stages? Done.
Cross-over characters? Done.
3-D? Done.
Better breasts physics? Let's please not go there.
IMHO I think the series peaked with Street Fighter vs Capcom 2. My god I love that game. They should just up the power moves, and throw in a few new faces, stages, smooth out the graphics and leave it as 2D.

Say... Bionic Commando.
Where's my Bionic Commando Redux?!

2D sprites can look gorgeous in HD. 3D animation still struggles to match the life, expression, and artistic style in quality hand-illustrated 2D animation.
========================================
Under many circumstances sprites do look superior to 3D models, but 3D models consistently beat sprites in the category of animation. 3D models may create characters with sharp polygon boundaries and a plastic look, but this form of graphics is perfect for animation. Both Castlevanias on the DS are praised for their 2D sprite graphics but the animation is OK at best. I've really gotten used to smooth animation over the past decade. There are few things worse in a video game than a beautifully drawn sprite with choppy animation.

I'm relieved to see there are still some people with taste.

That's just a matter of lazyness, or (most likely) lack of funds/time in the hands of developers. In the end, even the very best 3D CG animation used in hollywood blockbusters looks computerized, and somewhat lifeless, when directly compared to the movement of the best handdrawn films that are out there. And no 3D game has animation that looks as lively as SF3 (or Garou: Mark of the Wolves, for another example).
In fact, I wish they would have done this with SF3 instead of SF2. If they really are going to just draw the same sprites in high res, as seems to be the case, then SF3 will STILL look better than this SF2 remake, despite its drastically lower resolution.
Because in the end, despite what some 'tards seem to think, resolution is only a minuscule fraction of what makes graphics look good. All the rest is design.

Completely agree. Guilty Gear utterly destroys Street Fighter. Awesome gameplay, smooth graphics, and way better music. You really do have to wonder if Capcom is ever gonna produce a new Street Fighter though...
Reply
Well, not really. The limit of your resolution is basically a box to be filled with your game's art...small res = small amount of art shown. If you want to show off, you need a lot of room...large res...

Though personally, the crisper sprites aren't as appealing to me as the additional frames of animation, which is why I'm holding out judgement until we see some video, and I can only hope it's as fluid as I'm imagining.
Your comment about SF3 looking better is purely down to personal preference of the art-style, because this should blow SF3 out of the water.... unless you don't like the way the SF2 characters look.

If you've never seen their artwork before, go out and pick up a copy of Street Fighter Issue #7. It came out a couple years ago and has some great stuff in it. Not just that issue though, but all of them, of course, as well as their take on DarkStalkers, Street Fighter Legends: Sakura, etc.
Just wait until full, real screenshots and comparisons are shown, and ultimately, videos of the game in action. Here's to Capcom!

Can't wait to see it in motion, but I still think the time on this would be better spent creating Street Fighter 4.
Just as in the motion picture world, video games have finally reached the era of bad re-makes.
