Ken's looking good for new HD Street Fighter II
This is Ken, you may recognize him from such games as ... well, almost every version of Street Fighter ever. Capcom released this image of how Ken will look in the upcoming Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for XBLA and PSN. Anybody who purchased the other Street Fighter II game on XBLA feel ripped off? Yeah, us too.
The new look is thanks to Udon Comics and we can't wait to see this thing in motion. Capcom will be releasing new images of the re-drawn sprites over time leading up to the release of SFIITHDR at some indeterminate point in the future. We have no doubt that this game is going to be gorgeous, we're just hoping the controls feel "right" using the Xbox 360 and PS3 controller.

...you just feel ripped off 'cuz you aren't any good at it.
exit stencil @ Jun 1st 2007 5:48PM
i never liked the xbox controller for street fighter games. that's one place the play station controller has it beat.
HD Marvel vs. Capcom 2? now that would be something.
kingofwale @ Jun 1st 2007 2:59PM
great, 20 years of evolution and we are back to..... 2-D Ken.
what's next? Capcom claiming they spent 23 million dollars making this game?
Zertoss @ Jun 1st 2007 2:59PM
"Can't wait to see Chun Li.... there I said it... judge me...."
I thought the exact same thing and then thought "Ooh Cammy too!". Out loud. At work. Around coworkers.
They just kinda ignored me. I think they've grown to expect this sort of thing from me.
gr @ Jun 1st 2007 3:01PM
"...you just feel ripped off 'cuz you aren't any good at it."
Uh no that isn't it. We spent money on it and now a better version is coming out.
vidGuy @ Jun 1st 2007 3:04PM
Wait, you guys are getting excited about HD versions of 15-year-old sprites? Meh.
Daniel D @ Jun 1st 2007 3:06PM
thats what she said! lol
Final Prototype @ Jun 1st 2007 3:08PM
Not that it's hard to understand but look at the anagram for this! Redunkulous. Just call it SF:HD and be done with it. Also finally move onto Street Fighter IV. The odd naming system has been irking me for years.
Either way, I'll buy it. There's nothing like paying for the same thing 6 times over. :)
Grog @ Jun 1st 2007 3:09PM
It's a nice little bonus, but if it's just the graphics (of *SF* for goodness' sake!) changing, are people really going to rebuy it?
gamer1 @ Jun 1st 2007 3:11PM
I thought it was Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Vidikron @ Jun 1st 2007 3:23PM
I still think they are wasting their time with the SFII HD remake. One, we already have a version of SFII on XBLA. Two, although I know SFII is a very imoportant game in fighting game history, there are plenty of better fighters that came after. Personally, I wish they were making an HD version of SFA3 instead. A better game in every way.
Evan @ Jun 1st 2007 3:36PM
2D sprites can look gorgeous in HD. 3D animation still struggles to match the life, expression, and artistic style in quality hand-illustrated 2D animation.
I recently had a chance to play Arcana Heart, and it's sharp, clean 2D graphics made the other 2D fighters in the arcade look absolutely pathetic. If you're judging 2D fighters based on NeoGeo-ero titles, look again.
horngreen @ Jun 1st 2007 3:36PM
Wow they "can't wait to see this thing in motion"? All three frames of animation that the characters in Sf have will look better in HD? If you're truly looking forward to this you've got some real problems deep within your lonely brain.
zero2dash @ Jun 1st 2007 3:40PM
Ok, it's time we all come to grips with reality.
-Capcom will never make Street Fighter IV, they'll just continue milking every other game they've ever created for all eternity. OR they WILL make Street Fighter IV, but they'll make it 3D because [they'll say] "2D doesn't sell" (BS) and it'll be worse than any one of the EX series games before it.-
...deep breath...and...continue on with life.
gullum @ Jun 1st 2007 3:45PM
@14
The animators will be added more frames of animation as well. The creator said that this will cause lon-time fans to have to "re-learn" the games because of the added frames. I am looking forward to this since we never got the crappy version that the XBLA got.
samfish @ Jun 1st 2007 3:57PM
See, now THAT'S what a new 2D Mega Man should look like! That would be just dandy!
...with Wiimote aiming.

#4. great, 20 years of evolution and we are back to..... 2-D Ken.
what's next? Capcom claiming they spent 23 million dollars making this game?
3D isn't everything. Have you played the street fighter games that are in 3D? Pure shit.
Some games should just remain in 2D like, Sonic, Castlevania, King of Fighters, etc.
An yes, i'm one of those people that say, graphics aren't everything.
Ok, everyone flame me now.
Walking Contradiction @ Jun 1st 2007 4:13PM
King 2-D
Guilty Gear is the King of the 2d fighters. They should make all 2D fighters like that.
dvnt @ Jun 1st 2007 4:15PM
Wow, Ken has muscles that don't even exist!
samfish @ Jun 1st 2007 4:27PM
#20:
Remember that drawing of Capitan America by Rob Liefeld where someone Photoshopped his clothes off (bear with me, here) to show how distorted he'd look because that's how absurdly bad Liefeld is?
And his penis would have been about the size of a penny?
That's probably what Ken is sportin', too.
James @ Jun 1st 2007 4:48PM
Why waste all that work on a game I've played to death? Make a new game already. I think Capcom has two divisions. Oldschool Rehashed Garbage and Genius Inventive Gold.
Jose @ Jun 1st 2007 5:26PM
So has anyone fixed that shitty D-pad on the Xbox controller yet? Crappy, floaty, clunky POS!
Sorry, I'm still burnt I bought Capcom Vs. SNK 2 for Xbox so I could play on live, but the damned controller made it impossible.
samfish @ Jun 1st 2007 5:23PM
"and Genius Inventive Gold."
That would have been Clover.
Mr Khan @ Jun 1st 2007 5:25PM
@ James
you've just described basically every company that's been around since the NES days
Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom, Namco, everyone
Kye @ Jun 1st 2007 5:26PM
It's always amused me that Ken (and He-Man) has always had blonde hair and black eyebrows.
Personally I don't see the need for a SF4. What would it bring?
New characters? It's been done.
Better graphics? It's been done.
New stages? Done.
Cross-over characters? Done.
3-D? Done.
Better breasts physics? Let's please not go there.
IMHO I think the series peaked with Street Fighter vs Capcom 2. My god I love that game. They should just up the power moves, and throw in a few new faces, stages, smooth out the graphics and leave it as 2D.
Ashraam @ Jun 1st 2007 5:30PM
While Capcom is busy rehashing old IP's for the 15th iteration, why don't they try doing some different ones for once?
Say... Bionic Commando.
Where's my Bionic Commando Redux?!
heyo007 @ Jun 1st 2007 5:32PM
Did someone say breast physics?!?
Sign me up for four!!!
*kidding...just kidding.
Steve @ Jun 1st 2007 5:41PM

========================================
Under many circumstances sprites do look superior to 3D models, but 3D models consistently beat sprites in the category of animation. 3D models may create characters with sharp polygon boundaries and a plastic look, but this form of graphics is perfect for animation. Both Castlevanias on the DS are praised for their 2D sprite graphics but the animation is OK at best. I've really gotten used to smooth animation over the past decade. There are few things worse in a video game than a beautifully drawn sprite with choppy animation.
Hardcore @ Jun 1st 2007 5:44PM
Awesome.
When is Street Fighter II Turbo Deluxe Elite Special Legendary HD ++++ Mach IV Extreme Fusion Remix Edition coming out?
Norm @ Jun 1st 2007 5:59PM
They aren't adding new frames to the gameplay. the moves that have multple frames with the same stance/animation will get some inbetweens, but the game will play exactly like the original version of super turbo, as stipulated by capcom of japan.
DarkTetsuya @ Jun 1st 2007 6:46PM
Seconded on the redone Cammy, rawr :P XD
Skippy @ Jun 1st 2007 7:49PM

Completely agree. Guilty Gear utterly destroys Street Fighter. Awesome gameplay, smooth graphics, and way better music. You really do have to wonder if Capcom is ever gonna produce a new Street Fighter though...
bm @ Jun 1st 2007 7:32PM
"3D animation still struggles to match the life, expression, and artistic style in quality hand-illustrated 2D animation."
I'm relieved to see there are still some people with taste.

That's just a matter of lazyness, or (most likely) lack of funds/time in the hands of developers. In the end, even the very best 3D CG animation used in hollywood blockbusters looks computerized, and somewhat lifeless, when directly compared to the movement of the best handdrawn films that are out there. And no 3D game has animation that looks as lively as SF3 (or Garou: Mark of the Wolves, for another example).
In fact, I wish they would have done this with SF3 instead of SF2. If they really are going to just draw the same sprites in high res, as seems to be the case, then SF3 will STILL look better than this SF2 remake, despite its drastically lower resolution.
Because in the end, despite what some 'tards seem to think, resolution is only a minuscule fraction of what makes graphics look good. All the rest is design.
teitoku @ Jun 1st 2007 10:17PM
"Because in the end, despite what some 'tards seem to think, resolution is only a minuscule fraction of what makes graphics look good. All the rest is design."
Well, not really. The limit of your resolution is basically a box to be filled with your game's art...small res = small amount of art shown. If you want to show off, you need a lot of room...large res...
MrMastodonFarm @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:03AM
Well, I think they should correct it because this is for a remake of Super Street Fighter II, a different game from Street Fighter II Turbo. Because of this, many of the comments about SFII v. SFIII should be ignored. SSFII was the game at its top. A perfect game in the gameplay department now with graphics to match. I also can wait for SFIV.... what I want is Marvel vs. Capcom III. (With even MORE characters... like Jedah.... and the Silver Surfer... please?)
bm @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:30AM
If that's what you really believe, well, I guess you're one of those 'tards then.
bm @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:32AM
That was to 37, not to the above post.
RockLoi @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:45AM
BM, resolution is a fraction, but it's hardly miniscule. Especially in 2D in my opinion.
Though personally, the crisper sprites aren't as appealing to me as the additional frames of animation, which is why I'm holding out judgement until we see some video, and I can only hope it's as fluid as I'm imagining.
Your comment about SF3 looking better is purely down to personal preference of the art-style, because this should blow SF3 out of the water.... unless you don't like the way the SF2 characters look.
Paul Gale @ Jun 3rd 2007 1:32AM
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is definitely one of my most anticipated games for 2007, because the SF series is one of my favorites, period, and I really appreciate the work that Udon is putting into it.
If you've never seen their artwork before, go out and pick up a copy of Street Fighter Issue #7. It came out a couple years ago and has some great stuff in it. Not just that issue though, but all of them, of course, as well as their take on DarkStalkers, Street Fighter Legends: Sakura, etc.
Just wait until full, real screenshots and comparisons are shown, and ultimately, videos of the game in action. Here's to Capcom!
cool_modine @ Jul 1st 2007 6:40PM
Looks like comic art incorporated into flash graphics...
Can't wait to see it in motion, but I still think the time on this would be better spent creating Street Fighter 4.
Just as in the motion picture world, video games have finally reached the era of bad re-makes.
LunaTik @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:09PM
Ive also heard there will be some slight gameplay changes made to this aswell. Would they be possibly putting in the parrying system into works aswell or just changing up the damage ratio. Eitherway Im really stoked for this game. If they make the animation as fluent as SF3 with HD to boot id be really stoked. Although I agree when they should do this for sfa3 instead.
