Like a long-lost lover seen in our periphery as they board a train to Paris, our dream of teabagging a friend's corpse right after we call an air strike on them continues to flit just out of our reach. Its latest elusion: The exclusion of competitive multiplayer from Mercenaries 2.
Do we take some comfort in the dozens of new weapons mentioned in the Eurogamer interview? The addition of boats? The hundreds of other new vehicles? Sure, some. But it's a cold comfort. And yes, we can already hear you now: "There's cooperative multiplayer, can't you air strike/teabag that way? Isn't that the same?" But that's obviously different. How can you teabag someone without a victory? It's just ... hollow.

I wasn't really expecting competitive multiplayer...it wouldn't really be that good.
Now the co-op they are adding in...
HELL YES.

Meh. No big loss. Co-op is much more fun than multiplayer anyway IMO. Especially in this game, the exclusion of online co-op would have been tragic, but the exclusion of online multiplayer is merely a minor, minor disappointment.

Justin, you should fix the title. Competive isn't a word!
I think deathmatch-type multi player is getting old fast. Co-op multiplayer sounds like a far more fun thing to do.

multiplayer is the norm now. that's where all the replay value is. so we go from purchase to rental real fast!

this doesn't bother me, not every game that has guns is going to either be fun online or need online DM. CO-OP is the real future IMO there is only so many ways you can kill somebody without it getting stale..Plus many if not most game dev's just toss in the features weather or not they work it's just a watered down element in games these days.

Mecenaries was one of my favorite games of the last generation... and it didn't have MP or co-op. So I really don't care at all that Mercenaries 2 doesn't have MP. It's got co-op! Really, don't most people specialize in one or two MP games anyway? So won't most people be playing Gears, Halo 3, Warhawk, or UT3? It's not like people are going to be hurting for MP games to play.
Although, I could see where Mercenaries would have a lot of potential as an MP game. The number of different military vehicles the first game had was impressive. I imagine it would play a lot like a Battlefield game.

Pity to see the game get "dumbed down" because it's on the Playstation 3 and it's horribly bad PSN service. Since the game was originally announced for the PS3 before any word of a 360 version it seems they developed for the lowest common denominator.

@9
How can it be "dumbed down" when the original Mercenaries didn't have multiplayer or co-op?

People are actually saying they will "pass" on this game now because it doesn't have freakin deathmatch??
I don't know how much these people know about what type of game this is, but its like adding deathmatch to GTA4 or something. It might be fun for a couple minutes, but would ultimately feel hollow because the game is so huge the devs had to spend all their time on the single player and co-op.
I don't know about you, but I HATE tacked-on features, especially tacked-on multiplayer.

Someone who says they are 'passing on it now' weren't planning on picking it up to begin with. Mercenaries 1 was an excellent take on the Sandbox genre, and a next-gen version with the added bonus of Coop? I was planning on buying it, regardless....now I can convince a friend to pick it up, too.

Yeah, that must be it. Not like the ps3 has any games with deathmatch modes, plus it takes so much more to make a deathmatch work than online co-op does.

Good! I for one am sick and tired of competitive multiplayer. I always perfered co-op to fighting against other players.
