New Tekken 6 screenshots, artwork released
Just a few days ago we said hello to Miguel the matador, one of the new fighters in the upcoming Tekken 6. Now a whole host of screenshots have been released, showing both in-game stills and CG artwork, including a few gratuitous female underthings images! The first 17 pics in the gallery below are from the new batch of screens, while more can be found by clicking the "read" links below.Three new characters have been confirmed for Tekken 6 along with a host of returning fighters, making this cast the largest in the series' history. Tekken 6 is heading to PS3 and arcade by the end of the year, and rumors say it will be released for Xbox 360 as well.

*yawn* Tekken 6!? Sweet! It'll be JUST like the other 5.
Fighting games like this are boring. We need more games like Guilty Gear and Capcom vs. SNK.
sheppy @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:16PM
Wow, Ken. So you're telling me we need more games like Guilty Gear (a series which has been more about balancing between iterations rather than overhauls) rather than Tekken...
Methinks I should introduce you to this idea called "importing games." Because like it or not, the 3D fighters are the only financially viable ones in the states. Meanwhile, on the import scene, you can have all the Melty Blood your heart desires.

Tekken quit being fun right around Tekken 3.

Honestly another 3D fighter is about as important to me as another WWII FPS. Tekken was fun... almost 10 years ago when the technology and genre was original.
JonnyBoy2U @ Jun 2nd 2007 9:14PM
We really should measure the anger levels of sony fanboys everytime they read a rumor because I'm sure they top the charts in every category related to stress and anger.
If its a rumor then why are you so worried? Why are you so bent out of shape if you're SO certain that its NOT going to happen. I for one don't care about Tekken. Never have and probably never will. Always perferred Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat to the series. But I won't be surprised if it does come to the 360 and with the way rumors related to the 360 have been going then this rumor is most likely going to be FACT. And if it does become a solid fact I for one will laugh again at sony and their nasty attitude and arrogant fanboys.
Last but not least can the general public PLEASE QUIT BITCHING about game series!? Guess what!? IF a game is popular then its fans will probably WANT a sequel. Hence the reason why we have series like LoZ, Metroid, Mario, Soul Calibur, Tekken, GTA, and etc. IF you don't want it then don't buy it. Its just that simple. But stop acting like the games are horrible because its the 2nd or 3rd game in the series. Because really it won't stop it from selling well and it won't deter true fans from enjoying it.
Zach @ Jun 2nd 2007 9:17PM

Where've you been the last few months? Those "bullshit" rumors have turned out true mroe often than not so far. Don't be mad just because you lost DMC4, Ace Combat 6, Virtua Fighter and soon Metal Gear exclusivity. Be mad because you wasted 600 bucks on Sony's big black doorstop that bleeds exclusives.
Also, this game looks like ass. Namco has thus far demonstrated a complete lack of talent when it comes to making their games look "next-gen" so far. My hopes for Soul Calibur continue to dwindle.

You guys must be smoking something. Or else you're just graphics whores. Those look amazing to me. Like seriously I don't understand what is so bad about those graphics....
jay @ Jun 2nd 2007 9:44PM
There's nothing bad at about them per se, they're just what we're used to seeing in game, in promotional media. It's just too recycled to get excited about yet another attempted realistic graphic style in even more recycled gameplay.
I hope Smash Bros calls it a day after 3. Honestly, 3D fighters have a way of getting stale. Didn't care past Tekken 3 myself.

Your right but you can see trends based on pass habit and what has Namco done with its other Next Gen games....I'm pretty sure they made them multi-console..And one more thing NAMCO IS NOT OWNED BY SONY!!! GET OVER IT!! The game will be multi-console and thats a good thing for the gaming industry..Why shouldn't everybody get to play it?
Rod Munch @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:02PM
I think we can all agree, whether we like it or not, Brawl will not be the last Smash Bros game! But about this Tekken 6, I never really found Tekken or Virtua Fighter fun after I got into Soul Blade and then Soul Calibur. As long as the games are good and fun who really cares how many they release?
Brandon @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:37PM
Why is it that virtually any PS3 game not made by Sony is "rumored to be coming to the 360"?

"Yeah I know. :( It's a shame that the West gets more lame 3D fighting games, while the East gets all the great 2D fighting games.

Okay, now is where I get totally blasted. I personally cannot stand this whole "2D vs. 3D" war going on with fighting game hardcores. Frankly speaking, they are often very mush two sides of the same coin.
2D fighters typically emphasize simplistic combos but flashy attacks, emphasis on air and ground combat, and super cheesy moves like dragon punches and fireballs.
3D fighters typically forego supermoves in favor of elaborate, flowing combos with more subdued attacks and an emphasis on ground combat. Their cheapness lies in the elaborate combo systems.
Both have advantages and disadvantages. And frankly, I enjoy both. I find it hilarious that, when SNK made KOF:MI, it was their first shot at moving 2D gameplay to the 3D realm and it was a hugely stumbling move. Meanwhile, the much better sequel, Maximum Impact 2, had sooo much hatred in the states, they had to rename it King Of Fighters 2006. And it's biggest crime is the fact that it's 3D. For the most part, it's 2D gameplay almost entirely intact with a massive amount of flash (Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the epileptic's safe bet compared to this game), nifty anikmation sequences, and a 3D dodging system to accomidate the third dimension addition to the series. And yet 2D gamers will never touch it claiming it's garbage just because it's 3D.
It's sad, really. Fighting games are a rapidly shrinking genre kept alive primarily through nostalgia and anime licenses and the core audience is too busy bickering amongst themselves while watching this genre slip into obscurity forever. It's like watching the Shump fans having the Gradius vs. RTypes pissing contest all over again.

Question to Tekken fans.
I used to love Tekken 3 way back in the day, then I started playing Soul Calibur on Dramcast. When I came back to Tekken 3 I found it so slow as to be unplayable compared to the fluidity of Soul Calibur.
So the question is, are later Tekken games as slow paced as Tekken 3 or are they more quick paced?
BTW, I am not saying that the slow pace was a bad thing, just that after SC I didn't like it anymore.
octoberasian @ Jun 3rd 2007 12:28AM
As amazing as the graphics are, I do agree with those that do criticize it. It doesn't look any different than what we can see already in current generation console titles-- regardless if it's 360 or PS3, excluding the Wii. If it is truly next gen, then console titles should separate itself and distinguish itself between each other as a console and between them and a PC given current PC technology. If there is truly enough horsepower in a PS3, there should be enough to show realtime folding in clothes, more realistic textures, lighting and particle effects to distinguish itself from the 360 and the PC. And, the same applies to the 360 as well. Developers should put more of an effort in showcasing a console's full potential than taking the easy way out. It is to this end why graphics between a 360 and PS3 are hardly indistinguishable. There is no variation or difference. And, it shows, even if the 360 is DirectX-based and the PS3 is OpenGL-based, there isn't much of a difference. What can be achieved in Gears of War can definitely be achieved on the PS3 if more of an effort was put into doing so. A game such as Tekken 6 can also be developed as well for the 360. Though two different forms of technology, since their release, both consoles and their respective game developers have not put much of an effort to show fans and consumers the meaning of indistinguishable and different and next gen.

Okay, no one has answered my question regarding Leo's gender. Stop your bickering and let me know. It's of utmost importance.
konajinx @ Jun 3rd 2007 1:13AM
Tekken 2 was the reason I originally bought my PS1. Loved playing it in the arcade, and it quickly became my fave fighter at the time. Then 3 came out and the series seemed to lose its *oomph* and it has been treading water ever since.
Suffice it to say Tekken 6, like overy other game so far for the PS3, will not give me cause to waste 600 bucks on that console. I would buy it on my 360 for 20 bucks, perhaps. It's definitely not a game to get so riled up about if it did cross over to the Xbox. But then, the Sony fans aren't having much to live for if they don't have something to get worked up about over either their system or one of the others.
perfectchaos @ Jun 3rd 2007 1:23AM
@ fizzlestick: a lot of these "fanboy" rumours sure have come true as of late...
Negativecool @ Jun 3rd 2007 2:44AM
I respect the Tekken series. I still play Tekken 3 from the PS1 days. But after looking at these screenshots, the first thing that sprang into my head was "Wow are Japanese developers falling behind western developers."
Those character models aren't much better than their PS2 counter parts. They just aren't. Take away the HDR lighting, and more detailed textures, and you got yourself a PS2 character model.
Which is why fighters have fallen off the map for me. They seem only to be popular in Japan where the arcade hasn't completely DIED yet. You see any western developers making fighting games like this...no. Other than Fight Night which is basically a boxing sim, there arent'.
I think I'll have to hang up my controller when RPG's, and FPS's start to go this stale.
sheppy @ Jun 3rd 2007 2:47AM

Yes, in the typical "haha, he looks like a she" BS postings meant to somehow be clever instead of completely removed from video gaming and anime culture, yes, Leo is a boy. Next time you want to be clever, at least keep in mind there are resources like this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishi
which illuminate how drastically unoriginal your "observation" is.
@fizzlestick
Whatever made you think rumors needed to be substantiated in order to be a rumor? If I went into Best Buy today and heard a clerk tell a customer there was a rumor that Lair was goin to go to 360, I would not be out of place stating this was a rumor. American Heritage Dictionary defines rumor as
"A piece of unverified information of uncertain origin usually spread by word of mouth"
Guess what, fucker? It may be a long shot or maybe even impossible (see: Halo on DS), but it's still a rumor. Joystiq was not out of place mentioning it was a rumor nor reporting on the original rumor.
@ExMcloud
Sure, it's possible. Only the foolhearty doubt it could ever happen. However, considering it's PS3 that will be powering the arcade machines, you would think part of the alliance would be a timed exclusive of some sort. Maybe a permanent exclusive. And of all those Namco multiplatform releases from exclusives, I can only think of one right now. Gundam Musuo which will be coming stateside for both PS3 and 360 under the name of Dynasty Warriors: Gundam (although, to be fair, they got DW5 running on 360 in the past and as an owner of Gundam Musuo, I can tell you it's highly doubtful that it's a different engine). And Namco, as a company, doesn't have a huge hostory of multiconsole releases in their main series. In fact, Namco is most know for console specific iterations (see Ridge Racer 6 & 7). Even on their big daddy SCII, each console got their own version. So while I wouldn't doubt Tekken 6 will be coming to 360, it's still a far, far way from certain.
@Brandon
Because we live in this really strange world where games migrate from PS3 to 360 and it's "sensible move" and when 360 games go to PS3 it's "have fun with our leftovers." There is also this concept that, despite Sony having the most amount of developers on board (and people tend to forget this), that somehow making a game for both consoles is as easy as pressing a "do it" button on the magic coders keyboard. Companies have to take a look at what system better serves a genre rather than raw numbers. Likewise, the general assumption is nobody wants to make PS3 exclusive games.
@Sri Lumpa
Tekken has picked up the pace but ever so slightly. If you have a PS2 and $15 though, I suggest grabbing a copy of KOF 2006 at EB. It's very fast paced. Or give DOA a shot.
@konajinx
The saddest part is if you ask any Tekken fan, 3 is the apex and the PSX version was loaded with so many features and options that, to this day, is one hell of a value compared to fighting games releases on consoles. I mean, hell, Tekken Force mode alone made the price of admission. Not to mention it was one of the more balanced chapters. But yeah, compared to the second one, it completely sucked. *snicker*
Also, what dreamworld exactly are you residing in where PS3 has no exclusives coming out to look forward to? I mean, you've been alive for the past couple of months when several "wha?" demos went to full fledged hot properties and even the most jaded news sources started looking Sonys way. I mean, hell, just look up Gamers Day. OH NOES! Da Tekken 6 may got to 360, Sony's entire lineup is ruined. HOW CAN THEY COMPETE?!? ...jackass
@perfectchaos
A lot, yes. But to be fair, it's still batting around the same accuracy as Nostredamas. After all, we're still waiting for an awful lot of those other rumors to come true. So if you're going to use the recent past as a basis for your arguement, at least make sure it's got over a 10% accuracy rating. As stated above. Anything could be a rumor. Hell, there are actually people out there that BELIEVE Gamestop has presold 4 million Halo 3 copies in the US alone.

...is better than DOA4 (except the background). And VF5 is better than Fight Night. I mean, seriously. In VF5, the fabric stiching has normal maps. If you can't tell the difference in these shots, I suggest you dust off the PS2 and play it for a while. Tekken hasn't leaped as far as VF, no doubt. But it's still better by far. My main complaint is their normal maps such right now. Somebody buy Namco ZBrush 3, stat.
Emceay @ Jun 3rd 2007 3:25AM
:( it's a shame 3d fighters are the only "financially viable" ones, because I find it pretty few and far between to find someone who says they're into fighers and strictly 3d ones.
One day, someone declared 2d games were dead because the developers were too lazy to draw up new sprites...
That's okay.. but I wish for once a 3d fighter would be locked in 2d, cell-shaded, and this is the important one, move as quick and colorfully as a 2d figher.
Everyone wants to make it either look realistic or control realistic and I REALLY miss just keeping my eye on the X and Y axis. The Naruto games on ps2 are close, but they have depth and they use the smash brothers/doa type controls. I just want my QCF+P back! Innovation isn't bad, but a really solid genre of 2d gaming has just been tossed out the window. Nowadays it's only used as novelty to pull the heartstrings of Xers and early millenials.
Take viewtiful joe's style, and make me a figher with that. Make me a new streets of rage with that.
Contra has the right idea.
burninhell @ Jun 3rd 2007 4:16AM
The criticisms of the visuals are valid. These shots look pretty weak. Its not awful by any means but it doesn't look as good as either Virtua Fighter 5 or Dead Or Alive 4. Namco needs to do a lot better...
Alexander Mu @ Jun 3rd 2007 5:24AM
I lose more faith in the gaming population every time graphics are considered the end all be all factor in a given title.
It looks fine. I'm personally more concerned with the new character additions, how they affect the gameplay balance, and what, if any, newer features are included in the engine, if the physics are tekken3/5ish, or do they switch things up somehow?
It has been said on Joystiq before that the loss of exclusivity isn't a big deal, that Sony still has a great number of excellent titles to fall back on. In my opinion, they cannot let another Namco game slip away like this. The reason you have exclusives is to get people to buy your system for a game they cannot get anywhere else. When exclusivity goes away, we, the consumers, have more freedom to choose what system we want, and that is something Sony as a company does not want us to have. They don't want the 360 to be at the back of a PS3 owner's mind, and they certainly don't want potential owners hold off on a PS3 if a game or two they want will appear on a cheaper platform with little to no performance loss.
Lets get one thing perfectly clear. The PS3 version of Tekken 6, assuming there will be a 360 version, will not look leagues better or worse than the 360 is capable of. To think that is fanboyism, pure and simple. There will be differences, to be sure, but not a 200 dollar difference from my perspective. Now, if it could be guaranteed that I could only get T6 on a PS3, I would say it, MGS4, GTA 4, and NG:Sigma would push me to buy the system, but too much is in flux right now to be so certain with that much money on the line.
If we are paying for superior visuals on the PS3, the investment is not worth our time. The 360 can do 1080p on games and HD-DVD if we want. The PS3's selling point was that is was supposedly the only console that could do 1080p, and that's been thrown out the window with a single system update for the 360.
At this point, Sony must fight much harder to maintain exclusives if they can afford to. Despite all of these supposedly great new games coming to the machine, they are losing properties to the competition at such a speed that they are forced to bet on new IP's that may or may not be successful. It is mentioned by someone that there is a rumor that PS3 exclusive games are something publishers are shying from. It's hardly a rumor for a third party developer standpoint. The PS3 has the lowest installed user base of the new consoles right now, and the trends say it's going to stay that way for at the least this first year.
Nintendo had an exclusivity contract with Capcom over RE4, if you all remember correctly. The Gamecube proved to be an insufficient platform for Capcom to make up the costs for the game on. Money dictates where a game goes, not loyalty to a company. If a game cannot sell beyond a certain level on a single platform, it is just as easy to have multiple ports available, and have two or three sources of income off of the same product than just one. This is hardly and issue of being sensible or handing out the leftovers, this about corporations making money.
If you want to make a ton of it right now, you support more than one machine in some fashion. Putting a game on the PS3 alone is not nearly the same level of potential guaranteed sales as there would be on the 360 or the Wii (lol Tekken 6 on the Wii :P ).

Gee thanks sheppy, that screenshot completely changed my mind. I must have forgot to click that one when I looked at all the screens *rolls eyes in disgust*.
And I'm not even sure you read my comment. I was bashing slow to evolve Japanese developers. So where did you get the idea that I needed to know that you thought Tekken 6 is prettier than DOA4 and that VF5 gives you a big woody? VF5 is a different game than Fight Night by the way, so "better" is completely subjective and makes no sense in an argument. Also, I could care less about normal mapped fabric stitching, I was talking about the character models themselves, not their high res. clothes or their sweet cloth physics or what have you. In that respect, Fight Night has the most biomechanically correct fighters to date.
Read peoples' reactions. The general consensus in these posts is that these screens are pretty god damn weak. Compare this with the Tekken 6 teaser from E3 '05---With the sweat, steam, and pores on Jin Kazama---and you've got yourself a bunch of disappointed Tekken fans who rightly expected more.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=fighting&thread.id=53346
sheppy @ Jun 3rd 2007 2:28PM
@NegativeCool... I do believe you need to boot up VF5 on an HDTV set. Why? Because in characters like Lau, you have excessively detailed wrinkles on the characters faces attached to blemishes and pores. You do have the very subtle eyelashes attached to three planes rather than the usual 1. You have clothe that deforms correctly with very little geomtry intersection. You have clothing getting damp in the mudpit level and the rain soaked streets. You have, after you've been downed in the rain soaked streets level, each action shaking off water droplets. And yes, clothing is a part of the characters. The ONLY place where VF5 falters, visually, is in long hair. But no game has gotten this yet and VF5 puts on the best show in this regard.
You're saying Japanese developers are slow to advance and yet we've barely SEEN their controbutions this generation. From Lost Planet, we've seen the best damn fur ever done in realtime. In MGS4 screenshots, we've seen Revolver Ocelots screen filled with uneven teeth, stained, and filled with metal fillings. And what we've seen from Fight Night 3 is definately impressive, but it's a singular example from the states. Majority of the time, sweat equates to "gloss coat." And yes, that's even games AFTER Fight Night 3. And each time I see a new screenshot of FFXIII, I marvel at how gorgeous of a skin shader that is for a realtime game.
And, incidently, Tekken 6 is still a ways off, and at a generational turning point in the series, the home console version usually looks better. I say, don't judge it too harshly yet. When it comes out, THEN we can start bashing the hell out of it. But these early screenshots aren't even at a decent enough size to judge anything.
@synce
Damn, not even the developers can make up their mind then because that makes both genders they've confirmed Leo as.
