Today's most Zordonic video: Sega CD Power Rangers

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had an illustrious career in the early '90s. Sure, on some level they were the poor man's Voltron, but those SoCal teenagers sure did have a lot more video games than the lions of planet Arus. The video we have tonight (found after the break) is the Sega CD Mighty Morphin game's first level. The Dragon's Lair gameplay had you pressing buttons of an abridged episode. According to the synopsis, at higher levels you had to memorize what buttons to press because the game wouldn't tell you. Go, go, Power Rangers! Now, if you don't know what Voltron or the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are ... well, um, the shows were about taking something like your Pokémons and connecting them into a giant Pokémon -- a Pikachimsnorlaxabulbapsysaur, if you will.

OMG I had that game, and accept all flaming for it, as I deserve it.
I guess my parents saw that I was crazy for my Genesis, and always asked them to tape the latest Power Rangers episode while I was at school, so they put 2 and 2 together.....or something.
The Mickey Sega CD game was the best though. PR was alright, but it was dumb that you never actually played.
Good times.
XGamerX @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:23AM
lol if i got jumped by those things i would just laugh my ass off
Matt @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:55AM
PR was so BA back in third grade. :P
cmr @ Jun 2nd 2007 1:09AM
its funny... you have the black kid... hes the black ranger... the asian girl ... the yellow ranger... and the other girl is the... pink ranger...
Is that not PC or does it just make sense?
Also... its hard to tell how this is anything more then just watching the show and then hitting buttons on cue... but if you miss a button... what happens... the guy still kicks or blocks right?
Maybe you get a tally at the end or something.
Crummy @ Jun 2nd 2007 1:12AM
It's funny, coz the african-american guy gets a black power ranger, and the asian girl gets a yellow power ranger.
PS that game looks *horrible*.
Crummy @ Jun 2nd 2007 1:12AM
Oh wait, cmr got in first. Nevermind!
Chris @ Jun 2nd 2007 1:19AM
@cmr
I was thinking that too, but it looks like even if in the video the character takes damage, if you "block" your health doesn't go down.
Btw, laziest idea for a video game ever. "How can we take advantage of all these kids' love of this show while exerting the least amount of energy possible?"
bounchfx @ Jun 2nd 2007 1:41AM
I had this game too. Along with Sonic CD, Sewer Shark, and some Jet plane game that was awesome
Ryan @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:12AM
Everyone knew that the green ranger was the best, not that panzy ass red one. (P.S. White was gay to!)
Trickob @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:21AM
to ryan: the green and white ranger were one and the same, dude
Brian B. @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:30AM
Rest in peace Thuy Trang (actress who portrayed the original Yellow Ranger).
lvl99ultrathug @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:50AM
I own this game too. I think I found it in the bargain bin at TRU around Xmas of '95. It IS a horrible game, but at least I found Final Fight CD along with it, woohoo!.
Not only do you take damage for not pressing "block" when instructed to do so, you take damage whenever you don't press the correct button. Don't believe me? There's a part near the middle of the video where the player fails to press left, his health goes down, and Jason elbows the putty to our right. I know, I can't believe I still remember the names either.
Anyways, let's forget about this game and watch My Way Power Rangers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3ZTpSWRi-Q
ciroslive @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:56AM
My parents bought the game for me as a Christmas gift prank. ABBA CABBA is the code to unlock all the FMV sequences.
GO GO POWER RANGERS!!!
Purple Haze @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:56AM
I like how they amazingly just know everything about how it works after they get it, like the "power sword". Nice name.
KnuxSonic @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:57AM
I own and beat this game awhile back. It's basically like a DVD of the first season, but with awful video quality.
And no, the expert mode didn't have you memorize buttons, but you pretty much had to because they flew at you so fast.
Nintendoug @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:57AM
I forgot how much I hated Alpha-5.
Why is there always a gay robot?
BPM @ Jun 2nd 2007 3:14AM
Hahahha, awesome.
I got bored of Power Rangers after Zeo. That was the last season I liked. When I watched the Power Rangers Turbo movie... I just lost interest immediately.
The original Megazord was still the best.
Ah, the good ol' days.
jesus_bon_jovi @ Jun 2nd 2007 3:19AM
Wow this is terrible.. yet to think both Guitar Hero and Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents have you doing something very similar (but with rhythm).. Those beeping sounds seriously sound like when my CPU is overheating... at first i thought it was...
Ryan @ Jun 2nd 2007 4:43AM
@trickob
I knew that, but I thought the Green guys megazord was better than that stupid Falcon, I mean seriously, which is better, a Dragon or a falcon
Rob @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:05AM
look at those graphics though. Those character models must have had at least a billion polygons. The textures are also pretty realistic.
Geo @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:23AM
Ooh look spartans is master chief...........
deaftly @ Jun 2nd 2007 10:37AM
haha i still have this game, its great to play it on a drunken late night
Joshua @ Jun 2nd 2007 10:45AM
Man, I loved this show.
Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger!
Blue_Falcon @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:00AM
Thoes are pretty realistic graphics.
;)
NintendoFanbot @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:04AM
PR > Super Sentai, but the Dairanger theme was badass :p
This game is pretty much a precursor to DDR. Press the buttons to the rhythm of the fights. Arrows when moving/flipping and the buttons for attacks. Sometimes there would be times when you'd have to keep pressing ABC really fast to avoid a mortal blow.
The game was alright.
The first SNES game was excellent (the one based on The Movie was absolute crap though).
wolliam @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:44AM
i am the red - this is kid in me
Blizz4l9 @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:51AM
i was so pissed when power rangers came out it was such a gay rip off of voltron
doh23 @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:55AM
Is this coming to Xbox Live anytime soon?
Geo @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:11PM
@24 Blue_Falcon
Thoes are pretty realistic graphics.
of course its a video taken out of the show not digital animation, duhhh........
Anon @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:26PM
Green Ranger owns your souls.
mattclarkie @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:27PM
I loved that show when, well I must have been 5. Problem was it made them so much money they didn't know when to stop. Once it became Ninja Rangers it become No More Rangers for me.
Shame, that is part of my childhood I will never get back.
But I can honestly say I never had a Power Rangers game, just the plastic rubbish you had to assemble yourself, how much did they save on manufacturing?
Beboper @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:31PM
@1
Oh man, I loved the Mickey Mouse game that David Jaffe made for the Sega CD (and Genesis and Super Nintendo). I have fond memories of it!
J44xm @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:50PM
Yeah, Zyuranger kicks this show's butt, though Zordon will always hold a special place in my geeky heart. You can see Zyuranger on YouTube, by the way.
Ken Seang @ Jun 2nd 2007 1:46PM
PR was the BA in the third grade like someone up there mentioned... Me and my friends watched it all the times and I remember hearing on the news about kids getting hurt because they copy the power rangers. Also, did you guys know that the yellow ranger past away a few years ago in a car accident... If you look at IMDB you'll see, sad really...
Arrowned @ Jun 2nd 2007 2:12PM
I'm actually a hardcore PR fan (been watching the show since day 1, and it hits the midpoint of its 15th season with the episode in 16 days), and I still avoided this game. Give me the SNES/Genesis Final Fight clones any day.
ZekeDMS @ Jun 2nd 2007 7:11PM
I never knew this existed as a kid, and I'm glad. It's like some horrid combination of Time Gal and Double Switch that should never, ever have come to fruition.
And I'd have probably gotten it. :/
Rob @ Jun 2nd 2007 10:46PM
LOL, I have this game, in fact I'm looking at the cd case now. I was a huge PR fan back in the day, and I have all of season 1 and 2 on tape and my dad even taped some of the shows for me before leaving for school. Wow....Can't believe I actually thought the game was high tech back then. It was nothing more than watching the show (heavily edited and choppped at that) with some button inputs...LOL Good times.
Kenofthedead @ Jun 2nd 2007 11:24PM
Didn't Voltron, or what ever the two series that it came from, come out after Super Sentai?
Acording to all the things here in Japan, Sentai (Power Rangers in Japan) was out years before Voltron.
Making it the rip off really.
Any comments on either being gay though, well that's all on you if you look at robots and have homosexual thoughts.
Daniel T Lawson @ Jun 4th 2007 6:56PM
god... I watched the very first eps to... I remember thinking about how much of a rippoff it was to Voltron... I miss Voltron
