Last on the front page!!

Thought Gates handled that faux pas well...though it seemed so smooth coming from a nerd as to almost be intentional.

This could be a truly great idea for the purposes of certain games, like dance games for instance. But I don't see this replacing the controls for most things.

Using a tennis racket in your living room would not be a good idea for obvious reasons, and if you're not using a tennis racket, what makes it more immersive than a wiimote?

I'm also not sure as to how this works for non-gaming. Does a camera detecting your actions somehow translate into more immersive e-mail checking? Would a camera help me type this comment faster?

It has plenty of potential, but I don't see it changing the way we do things now.

Is it just me, or did EYE TOY not get mentioned at all? Especially the up coming Playstation Eye. Not a single mention, even amongst commenters here.

Rather odd.

If all gaming goes this direction I'll simply quit. It's fine if Nintendo wants to do it on their system, but I don't want everyone doing it. Whatever happened to the notion of relaxing with games? I don't want to be waving crap around to play every game.

I actually like Sony's implementation the best. It's a normal controller with motion detection built-in. That way games can still control normally but still have a little motion control thrown in... or you can choose to drive/fly using the motion controls or the sticks.

The problem with Nintendo's Wiimote is, quite frankly, the design sucks. A TV remote shape is horrible. Take games like Super Paper Mario that you have to turn it sideways. RIDICULOUS. Holding the Wiimote sideways is actually worse ergonomically than the original NES pad. Sure, it doesn't have the sharp corners, but that is offset by the fact that it's thinner on one side than the other. Also, when holding it 'normally' only the A button and the trigger underneath are actual easily accessible. The 1, 2, and home buttons are all in bad positions. Sure, the motion controls themselves may work fairly good, but the physical design may be the worst in gaming history.

Yep, Billy Gates was talking about something along the lines of the Playstation Eye (which must mean we'll see a X-Box 360 version coming).

@Vidikron

This camera scenario could address some of your concerns. You don't HAVE to wave your hands about. You can use, say, your coffee table as a keyboard. You tap the table and the camera registers it as key presses. Hell, I'm thinking of a scenario where the camera is focused on your hands and a flick of a finger could correspond to a button command. That solves two problems: the ergonomic issue that you have with the Wii Remote, and the issue of needing to buy an assload of peripherals and controllers. Your hands (or accessible knick-knacks, if you need tactile feedback) are the controllers. So you can have your free-motion games AND your kick-back, hands in your lap games.

Samfish, I blame the schools... specifically schools being out.

Heads up, kiddies: TXT speak is cool for IMing your friends, and for text messaging on phones. But when you're in an environment where you have infinite time and infinite space to write what you're writing, please, use proper english and grammer as best you can. It really is super annoying to try to decifer TXT speak, and as such hurts whatever point you're trying to make.

and just for future reference: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=171

OH yeah, and on the topic, 3d space recognition will never be any good with only 1 camera. Depth perception (and thus, spacial perception) requires at least 2 separate points of view for any accuracy.

For you wiimote pointer haters: it doesn't have to be 1 to 1 lightgun ish. At a certain range of distance and angle relative to the sensor bar, its plenty accurate enough. And if its not accurate enough, that problem can be solved in software using a calibration screen (aim at top left, bottom right, and center). The biggest problems right now are lag, which is caused by whatever smoothing algorithm they're using to keep the pointing from jumping all over the place from hand jitter. I think being able to calibrate as described would help both problems.

I know a lot of people are only talking about the aspect, of gaming Bill mentions. But honestly, the fun is in the fact that Gates is trying to shake the interviewers question, on the GUI being stagnant from the conception that Jobs stole from Xerox and from when Gates stole it from Jobs.

Honestly I thought that it was the most fascinating part of that clip, because it was Gates bumbling around trying to sucker this guy into believing windows has been the heights of innovation each time around, while basically, admitting there is no new ideas for the future at least from his stand point.

Jobs was even better ignoring Gates idea all together and giving his view that new non PC, Windows tagged devices will probably see innovation first because they aren't bogged down by crap. I think it was great to see Gates saying If you took somebody to an island for ten years, they wouldn't really get the new iterations. Pretty much proving this mans point, you shouldn't have to be isolated from a computer ten years to notice the innovation, it is either there or it is not.

I think this interviewer took a jab at them, showing that beyond them stealing Xerox's creation, they have not created anything different and innovative on their own at least when it comes to the GUI. That says a lot, if you think about it.
