it really depends on what MMO game. and if it accepts OE firmware. so basically, it depends on how Sony wants it. if Sony does it right, I'm in, otherwise, I will just stick with God of War and Crisis Core for next year, thank you

I really don't think you'd want to do much of an MMO what with the PSP's short battery life (at least short in the MMO 'Oh man where did all the time go?' sense) and awful load times. Maybe something not-really-massive like Phantasy Star Online.

That NGage game wasn't to bad, and we have plenty of mobile games (at least in Japan) going that route.

So I think it could be done, but it wouldn't be a Wow/Everquest experince, but above Puzzle Pirates or Fly For Fun.

MMO's wouldn't make sense on a handheld. Especially PSP. I mean, sure you could do it.. with a 30 minute battery life anyway.

To answer the questions in short. NO!

Portable gaming is not meant for uber nightly raids and how would you even chat?

No.. but seriously, ive been thinking about smaller aspects of the MMO world...
FFXI for example.

I play at home... then when im on the go.. i might wanna check the Auction House... or bazaars... or talk to my Linkshell... or maybe even take my character out for a quickie farming run.

Maybe there isnt a market for new MMOs on the psp... but there is definitely a market for current MMOs on psp even if its little add-on content.

PSP has a short battery life if it's because of the UMD loadings, but if you're running off the mem. stick, they aren't that bad.

If it's all runned by a memory card unit, then you should be able to get at least 10 hours of battery life on a stock version 1 battery (the 1800mAh one)

The PSP's battery life is plenty powerful. I clock in about 3 hours on a charge with full use of Wifi. Plus it has headset support as well, and load times are much less of an issue now that it's been out 2 years. Sheesh, there are some big PSP haters out here.

Despite what people think, MMOs can be conducted without having to download anything whatsoever

Case in point: Phantasy Star Online

@ Everyone

"Blah, blah if it works on memory stick blah blah it will have better battery life blah blah"

Yeah, except... if this is a commercial game. It WILL be on UMD, and it WILL run of the UMD and the battery life WILL suck.

It has nothing to do with hating the PSP, its just the truth. Try playing Twisted Metal online with speakers full blown and you will realize that the battery life sucks. Bad

@Mr Khan -

PSO isn't "massively" multiplayer. It's just multiplayer, much like Monster Hunter Freedom.

err...one of the first psp games? yah, we all know that most if not ALL of the first games for psp drained battery life, a LOT (here I have Twisted Metal and TH:U Remix")

"DS + Pokemon communicator + sweet MMO = teh win"

what about this equation:

DS + Pokemon communicator + sweet MMO + friend codes = teh lose

Can there be any good MMO on the DS, answer to that is a NO, and I doubt any developer will say otherwise, there isn't enough power to run a MMO on the DS, and pokemon WOULD havebeen a great MMO, sadly Nintendo has been screwing up hardcore gamers lately, so yah, don't expect one anytime soon, altho I did hear that there is a pokemon MMO in the works but by fans, that looks much better than any other of the pokemon games out there.

btw, why did the DS end up doing in a psp article?

The main reason why I don't see it happening is that the portable market is aimed at people who only have little bits of time to play. A half hour here, 45 minutes there. I know that when I use my DS, it'd be primarily during classes. MMOs don't lend themselves at all to that kind of play style.

"Yeah, except... if this is a commercial game. It WILL be on UMD, and it WILL run of the UMD and the battery life WILL suck."

Uh, commercial games have gone a route of non-disc read. Ever heard of Final Fantasy XI? On the PC, PS2, and Xbox360, it uses just the hard drive. It checks the disc to validate / start the program off the HDD on PS3/Xbox360, but after that it's smooth sailing off just the HDD. Having a game run off a 2gb memory stick is not that crazy a notion. The original EverQuest was 700mb or so decompressed on the hard drive.

Honestly, I would *KILL* for an MMO game for the PSP. I run homebrew for the most part on my PSP and that it, but if the MMO was pulled together right I'd sacrifice my PSP and pay a monthly for a good portable MMO. Hell, I've known people to build $1000 gaming rigs with no other reason than to play World of Warcraft.

Obviously something traditional like EQ or WoW or UO wouldn't work on a PSP (lack of a keyboard makes things have to shrink in scale)... But something like PSO, expanded would be nice. Hell, honestly, if there was a Pokemon style MMO, i'd be all for that. Whether it be DS or PSP, I am on board that train. Beats the crap outta Socom.

Beni, there is the potential of running commercial games off of a Memory Stick Pro Duo (downloading PSP ISOs have been proof of this), but noone has tried it yet.

But... Why not now? Flash memory keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. A 2GB MSPD could be gotten for $40, or even less if you look hard enough.

Christopher's example of FF11 is just that the disc is only used to verify/boot the game after it has been installed to the hard drive.

It's all very possible, you see?

Why do you even bother trying to justify the PSP. These are crazy Nintendo fanboys. Whats the point? It's like me telling you PSP fanboys that the DS is better than the PSP. It leads no where.

But I do find it amusing that majority of the postings on PSP threads are DS fanboys to ensure bashing of the PSP. Its like it eats their souls everytime they hear someone with a PSP. While they spend all their time on the computer ( rather than their DS) I'm on my PSP playing Monster Hunter Freedom 2 if not I'm on my DS (with an R4DS + 2gb MSD) and playing with the 50 games on it.

the DS can as well it might not look as pretty and might need more dev time...but it would probably sale more too since the PSP is in its death throws.

its a fact the DS is doing better and a fact the PSP has better hardware and both have kinda wonky control (to many touch screen cash in games the PSP lack a nub for simplistic porting).

With that goign goign on now come s a 50$ game they are forced to put a 20-30$ flash card in to store data and then charge 8-15 a month ontop of that...its kinda pointless until cellphones give you unlimited talk/data time......unless you live in a wireless city then you have hotspot fees........its just to messy....

altho a game like PSO could work you can play it on and off line with the same charatcer with that you can play it and go online when hotspots are avalabale.

Psp battery blah blah blah, people how much time do you actually spend playing games? How much time do you honestly need to play an MMO? Whats wrong with just plugging the PSP into a socket and playing it? Why not buy a larger battery? Theres loads. Hey, why not buy more batteries, that way you can have double the power, honestly the excuses are ridiculous. I would gladly except an MMO for my PSP. And if battery life has never been an issue for me and my online gaming via PSP, why does it bother any of you?

Uhhhh all of them. Every single commercial game can be played off the memory stick if you rip them to ISO, I do this as it conserves battery life and means I don't have to worry about switching games (2 4 gig memory sticks FTW!!). So its perfectly possible games could run just off the memory stick (look at all those PSX games as well.)

Seriously though I'd kill for FFXI on PSP ;-)

My friends commented on this that RPG in general are games for long run, while PSP in general very hard to handle: fingers and hands are tiring quite fast.

It's kind'a OK in NFS because you have long enough pause between races, when fingers can rest.

But overall, though unit is slick it is not that easy to hold in hands for very long time.

actually the PS2/PS3 dont need the disc at all after the install of ffxi. once its installed it doesnt need to verify anything off the disc. Only the 360 version needs the disc(which pisses me off since its hard wear and tear to leave the 360 on and afk since the disc is constantly spinning, so i play mostly on the ps2/3)

Okay now let's tally up the posts now and see the ratio between DS fanboys and PSP fanboys on this PSP thread.

I think DS fanboys are just getting hurt b/c the PSP is getting more bigger games instead of the DS' games that pretty much are ports of games from addictinggames.com. Then again, there's a reason why they put those games in "addicting"games.com website! They're ADDICTING!

Though I prefer my PSP more; I just bought a R4DS for my DS and I get my DS games for free now ....so..... I rather carry the DS around.

Free games for DS or $40 for PSP...... FREE sounds better to me.
