Anyone wondering if an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game would be possible on Sony's PSP can thank Lawrence Liberty for opening the window of opportunity with a few forward-thinking statements. The producer of the hotly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics recently told Eurogamer that he believes the PSP to be perfectly suitable for MMO. "Even if it relied on a sizable memory stick," he says, "it could certainly handle something like EverQuest Online Adventures."
The PC platform has an MMO graveyard that seems to grow with each passing quarter. It's no easy feat for an MMO to stay afloat for even the first year. Fanboys or not, persistent online worlds need to draw in the elusive casual gamer in order to retain enough residual support to survive. What do you think? Could the PSP draw in enough of an audience to keep an MMO alive long enough to kick some profit and convince developers to provide additional content?

That would be awesome! Right now my ancient PC turns every MMO into a MMSS (Massively Multiplayer Slide Show).

I think this would be a wonderful idea - if someone could snap up a property ... heck, even Everquest! and then put it out for ~$5 a month that would be a real kick,

Everquest could run on it just fine, and Sony already owns the property. I can't believe that they haven't thought about it already.

Ever heard of Playstation Home? I think it would be perfect for the PSP.

DC one is suppose to come to the PS3 and the PSP(cause Marvel went to 360, rivalries are funny things aren't they).
As long is it takes a Guild Wars approach(you buy the game and that's it, no monthly fees), I'll get it.

get me a bloody PSP based MMORPG, as fast as possible. is there an market? heck ya!
Me and my mates are always sitting at cafés in town with our PSP's, dealing blows in tekken dr, then we go home to WoW. IF we had an mmo on our PSP's... we'd play that instead of going home to wow. ( well untill the battery runs out at least )

@ ben:
yeah i was thinking about that, it would probably work quite well, especially if you could sync it with the PS3 version.

It would be great , but a simple one , not a hard to learn , idiotically complex one . Somwhere , where I could go and relax a 1/2 hours a day :)

If you have read kingofwale's posts you'd know he is a big PSP supporter and assume irony (especially with the use of 'teh') as I did.
Alien - that is exactly what I was thinking. I'm not a MMO person, but could see myself relaxing with 30 - 60 minutes of a cool MMO PSP game at night.
Whoever does it first - PSP or DS - wins big, in my estimation.

I've always thought that the next step in MMO's will be combining a mobile platform with a console/PC. It's just waiting for someone to do it. Even if you have limited features on the mobile platform - checking stats, character building, chat, etc. - it still is very inticing and adds to the addictive qualities of the genre.

Firstly, PSP should be able to handle a proper MMO - I don't see a major issue. I think players will have to get some memory sticks, however.
Secondly, it isn't a bad idea at all. An MMO could be a useful genre-addition to the PSP's current catalogue.
