The gorgeous non-linear side-scrolling exploration game Aquaria (winner of the IGF Seumas McNally Grand Prize) has the indie community all atwitter anticipating its looming release. The Ambrosia Times recently got its hands on a build of the game and had nothing but praise to lavish upon it.
You play as Naija, a lonely sea creature who uses songs to affect the environment, gain temporary abilities, and interact with the creatures around you. Levels are vast with tunnels, caves, and hidden areas to explore for hours on end. Bit-Blot has been silent about a firm release date, but talk from the game's co-creator and artist Derek Yu suggests it's in the final polishing stages and could hit in just a few months.

Game looks awesome. Hopefully it'll hit either PSN, XBLA, or Steam. Otherwise it'll likely slip by unnoticed.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Ecco I told you to stay away from that toxic waste.. *cries* Why.. why does it always happen to the ones we love!
Yeah, can't wait to play a next gen ecco type game where a sea creature(dolphin) uses song(ecco location, still a sound wave) to affect the environment(kill squid), gain abilities(ecco mimics others after ecco locating them) and interact with other creatures(mostly dolphins, but the occasional killy whale... oo so majestic). Hopefully it isn't as difficult heh.
*goes to play Ecco on the Wii..*
Also did you make a comment on what platform they are developing it for, didn't see one. I just assumed the 360 since they're getting all the stuff like this. Maybe everyone already knows and it's highly anticipated, if so I am faaarr out the loop.

You can add "Mac" to your "filed under" tags for this post. Ambrosia is a shareware company that makes original titles for the Mac as well as ports for indie PC titles, and Aquaria is one of the titles they are porting (which is why you found this article on their website).

I hope this is as good as ED. Back in't day that broke boundaries in the "klik" community. I've never been keen on underwater levels/games myself, but we'll see.

Why is this game getting so much praise, if its just a rip off of another game?

Maaan. Ecco the Dolphin scared the crap out of me as a child. Open water is not my thing, even in video games...

Echo, echo ... echo....
How about a game where you play as an electrician who gets zapped into a magical powerstrip and taken to a Turnip Kingdom, where you must save the dutchess from the evil termite King Volta. Along the way you will eat magic turnips that make you faster, allowing you to avoid one enemy hit.
BRILLIANT

its pc (and mac)
The only problem with these exploration based games is that if you stop playing one for a while, when you come back to it you haven't got the faintest idea what you are doing...

Man, I cannot believe the cynical reaction this title is getting... this game looks like an incredible experience. I for one cannot wait - the art direction alone is stunning and unbelievably refreshing. Even if the gameplay amounts to a linear swim from area to boss to next area, I'm 100% hooked - it's like traveling through a giant imaginative illustration. It's like being wee again and diving into a captivating story book... I feel sorry for anybody unable or unwilling to recall that sense of awe and other-worldliness a well-illustrated story book could create when we were children.
I'd love to see more games like this. I'm getting numb to the same-old, commercially-safe art direction the majority of games seem to suffer from these days.

I'm pretty sure they're implementing a 100% mouse controlled method. I love that because I can sit my mouse pad on the floor next to me in front of the laptop and lean back against the couch.
