Plundr, first location-based DS game, debuts at Where 2.0
Developer area/code have put their location-based PC game Plundr onto the Nintendo DS -- the first of its kind, according to their website -- and showed it off at Where 2.0. The adventure game utilizes a Wi-Fi positioning system to give you different islands based on your physical location.
At each island, your pirate can buy, sell and fight for goods. According to the game's website, "depending on where you are in the physical world, you'll find different islands, different market prices and different ships to fight." You can try the PC version here, but desktop owners won't be able to enjoy it. The DS is one of the most portable options around, and we'd love to try this out. Pictures of the DS game can be found on Flickr (one, two, three).

Wow, the location on that DS is just a few blocks from where I live!

You mean I have to walk my fatass down the block to get to another island in the game? wow.. talk about real life rpg.. no thanks.

I don't think that's what it means. I think you will have a group of islands available to you where you are. If you want to get access to other ones, you will have to move. Sounds interesting to me.

If that works well, then it sounds genius. I'm very intrigued.

everywhere i go and check the wifi with my ds, i have to go through the wifi config wizard and then search for an access point, some of which i dont get to connect to. will this game be able to automatically find the ip address without getting past the firewall?

Well, considering the distance i go to get to work, as well as how far i live from the city (Sydney), having to go to different places wouldnt be a problem.
though finding time away from Animal Crossing and Puzzle Quest will be.

wow.... a concept like this for a portable game? Why hasn't anyone marketed this to Japanese gamers?!

Might i go into people's house in order to plunder.
Because the neighbor doesn't look so bad

I like the idea, but this particular game sounds suck.

hmmm, i wonder how they will get the map down to street level without a gps device. You can get general area by looking up the ip you are connecting from but I dont see how they will get down to the detail in the pic.

It seems to me like the only way you could use Wifi as a positioning system is if you had 3 WiFi points at known locations and you used the signal strength for each of them to triangulate your position. Even then it would be very limited range and wouldn't be very reliable. I would much rather see this game ship with a GPS device that you put in the GBA port.
