No Final Fantasy for Xbox 360 in the works [update]
Feel like you're not getting enough androgyny and sexual ambiguity from your Xbox 360 games? We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but Square Enix isn't going to instantly fill that void with a Final Fantasy game for the Xbox anytime soon. According to IGN, Square Enix has nothing in the works for the Xbox 360 ... period ... exclamation mark. Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto says that while they've got Crystal Chronicles slated for the Wii, the Xbox 360 is a "completely blank page."That pretty much nails the coffin shut on Final Fantasy XIII making its way to the Xbox 360 before the PS3 gets its act together with a price drop and some other solid titles. Sorry Xbox 360 fanboys, you can still keep hope alive with that other fence-sitting espionage title that companies swear is a PS3 exclusive, even though the rumors just won't die. As for Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360, you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here. Move it along.
[Update: Square Enix now says it's still open to the possibility somewhere down the line. Maybe.]

OK, that solves that.
But just to be safe, let's check back in with Square Enix in nine months when they decide they want to turn a profit on this game.

C'mon xbots....start your excuses.....NOW!
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Jun 5th 2007 10:34PM
Not really a fan of RPG's, but it still would have been nice for those who are to have a try @ this on Xbox 360.
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Jun 5th 2007 10:35PM
@Steve
You're an idiot.
Ryan P. @ Jun 5th 2007 10:37PM
So what?? FF XII just came out and it plays like a never ending masterpiece. I've been at it for what seems like forever and it just keeps going. I won't need another FF game for another year or two at least.
HD TV's and PS3's won't cheap enough for most people for another two years anyway.
rick @ Jun 6th 2007 7:48PM
yawn.....oh well
Ian Von Porter @ Jun 5th 2007 10:38PM
You guys are going to be too busy playing Halo3 to think about FF. So, no big freakin' wup.
Skippy @ Jun 5th 2007 10:40PM
@1
How much do you think Sony is paying Square Enix to keep FFXIII exclusive to their system? They don't need to worry about turning a profit if Sony flexes the mighty dollar......or yen, whatever.
Shockgamer M2B @ Jun 5th 2007 10:41PM
$60 (and $600, Hyuk!) Well saved.
flaming360 @ Jun 5th 2007 10:45PM
Xbox fanboys dont need it we have HALO 3!!!;)
bearattack79 @ Jun 5th 2007 10:44PM
Keep it, you can have DMC4 back if you want.
Final Fantasy SuX @ Jun 5th 2007 10:45PM
WHO CARES, Final Fantasy Sucks... Boring...
saunderez @ Jun 5th 2007 10:45PM
Their loss. They don't want to support the next-gen console which currently has the largest install base and possibly the highest attach rate (at this time of it's life) of any console in history, it is their prerogative. I won't be buying a PS3 to play it. So the only loser in this situation is Square-Enix.
Heliophage @ Jun 5th 2007 10:47PM
There's always Mass Effect (well, maybe even ME2 by the time XIII comes out...). I'm looking forward to an East v West style RPG battle here. It'd be a much better console war if people had the opportunity to favor a console based on their tastes and titles rather than rabid fanboyism.
Civil War: I'm with Bioware.
Who's with Squeenix?
cc123 @ Jun 5th 2007 10:47PM
Sweeeeet.
PS3's are gonna fly once this thing drops in japan.
SE's FF series is one of the very few that doesn't even need to go multiplatform. It's the definition of a system seller.
rTwelve @ Jun 5th 2007 10:51PM
I know who would want to take me home..........
Diskoboy @ Jun 5th 2007 10:52PM
"No Final Fantasy for Xbox 360 ... period"
So what the hell is this game called FINAL FANTASY XI, I happen to be holding in my hands?
I think that counts as a FF game. Period.
Tracy @ Jun 5th 2007 10:54PM
Boooooooooooooo. I want more than just an MMO
tpny @ Jun 5th 2007 11:17PM
@saunderez
uh...? highest attach rate? are you dreaming? ever heard of the PS2? the large install base could also be due to the fact that people are buying the system and getting free games from hacks. im pretty sure theres a good portion out there. just check craigslist and you'll see a lot of modified x360 for sale. (not to mention the number of banned x360 from live).
panzerjedi @ Jun 5th 2007 10:55PM
@#14
Dragon Quest is the definition of a system seller. Final Fantasy is insignificant in comparison.
tituspullo @ Jun 5th 2007 10:56PM
who cares? the real news is nn gears of war for the ps3 ever! the can keep all the clones of final fantasy too! and any gundam game!
copa @ Jun 5th 2007 10:57PM
"Civil War: I'm with Bioware.
Who's with Squeenix?"
I'm excited about both games, and would like to see each of them on both platforms.
Kamizar @ Jun 5th 2007 10:59PM
I wonder what ever happened to that MMO Square was making for both PC and 360, I thought it was suppose to be FF themed...
jaysins @ Jun 5th 2007 10:59PM
Oh burn, burn yea you feel that, that's the burn you stuuuu... wait I'm an xbox fan :). I haven't been interested in FF since I was really let down by FFX. Dealing with the whiny pussy of hero Tidus, who reminds me of a simple plan song by the way, for over 40 hours was just too much for me. I beat the game on sheer compulsive and analness of having to beat a game when I pick it up.
I hear 12 is really good and I'm a bit interested in it, just not enough to purchase it. I think unless they do something unique, and good unique btw, with the series I'll continue passing on it. I have a lot of FF under my belt and don't feel that compelled to play through another one unless they can make if feel different or just an amazing story. With that said the way they are releasing in waves and based off the same universe does look like some effort and thought went into it, so the newer titles could very well change my mind. And by that time I may own a PS3 so it would be moot to me. But I'm not going to get bent out of shape about it or defensive fanboy on anybody, jk, until they have proved themselves worthy in my eyes. But I am interested and this is great news for PS3 fans. I hope the game rocks even if I don't have a PS3 by that time.
Dustin @ Jun 5th 2007 11:05PM
Well, all I can say is, congratulations Square for losing my $60.
I'm not against the idea of buying a PS3, but there is no allure besides a couple exclusive titles. The cost is just too damn high.
So who exactly is calling the shots over there?
cc123 @ Jun 5th 2007 11:06PM
@panzerjedi
Final Fantasy is #4 on the all time best selling franchise list.
Dragon Quest is #12.
Am I missing something?
WhackMushroom @ Jun 5th 2007 11:12PM
sony cant have any good news without someone shitting on it .. you know what? the ps3 is $600, there are few good games and PSN is shit compared to XBL .. yep .. been said a trillion times .. but your still not getting FF13 and if you do it will be when your on your 2nd xbox maybe even your 3rd.
ah dont listen to me im bitter because mine bricked after just 4 months. ps3 is running nice though ;)
Sabin Figaro @ Jun 5th 2007 11:15PM

=)
James @ Jun 5th 2007 11:15PM
It's not a shooter, so Xbox owners wouldn't have bought it anyway. No loss.
sheppy @ Jun 5th 2007 11:17PM
"They don't want to support the next-gen console which currently has the largest install base and possibly the highest attach rate (at this time of it's life) of any console in history, it is their prerogative."
Hate to break it to you but both PS3 and Wii have dangerously close attach rates to 360 as far as dates from launch. The attach rate issue isn't so much of an issue anymore. Now it's all installed base.
Plus, let's take a look at this from SquareEnix's position. FFXII Collector's Edition is fetching $30 new at EB. This is basically the quickest an FF game has dropped since FFX-2. Despite the devout following for the series, it still gets obliterated by Halo, GTA, GT, hell, I think even Resistance has outsold FFXII in the states. Can't be sure on that. Point?
360's strongest region is NOT Japan. In fact, 360 is a flopping fish in Japan. Despite Blue Dragon, it still remains largely ignored. Meanwhile, SquareEnix has to look at this because PS3 is selling steadily in Japan and the traditional fanbase for these games stick to Playstation consoles. So you have to ask yourself. With each JRPG released so far on 360 getting mehish sales, why would SquareEnix invest the money to port the White Engine to a fanbase that, in all likelyhood, will ignore the endeavor anyway?
Arturo @ Jun 5th 2007 11:49PM
no big deal to me i never liked playing those types of games anyways, i was never too fond of taking turns in combat and randomly engaging in a fight just by walking into random spaces lol :D
Nick James @ Jun 5th 2007 11:20PM
Sony owns a chunk of Square Enix. Get over it. By the way, PS3 outsells the 360 five to one in Japan. Where Final Fantasy sells a lot more than the US (not that it sells peanuts in the US, but you know what I mean). Much more than say, Devil May Cry 4 does in Japan, which, I think sold MORE in the US than in Japan, but I'm not sure. Don't quote me on that or anything, heh. If Squeenix REALLY wanted to make uber-profits, they'd put everything on the Wii or DS.... food for thought. As a final aside, if anyone EVER compares Halo 3 to FFXIII again, you should be banned from all Weblogs Inc. sites. Apples and freakin' burgers there, people. Not even close in any way.
Ken @ Jun 5th 2007 11:24PM
@cc123
I think he meant in Japan. DragonQuest has more of a pull in Japan than Final Fantasy.
@topic
This is good news. I (being as anti-Sony as I am) was getting tired of people jumping ship from Sony. They'll get on their feet when they drop the price. Then I'll be on board with them.
flaming360 @ Jun 5th 2007 11:27PM
If i had a PS3 i would get it.FF12 i did not like at all it sucked,FF10 was way better.
#27Fuck! Halo 3
BTW Halo is the best. sony fanboys need to stop dissin Halo 3 just because it is the best FPS
Ken @ Jun 5th 2007 11:29PM
@flaming360
If by "best" I sure hope you mean Console FPS. PC FPS' are exponentially better than it. :)
shadow0324 @ Jun 7th 2007 5:58PM
uhm im holding the latest GI in my hands and square enix is talking about the last remnant (the newest IP for the developer) and its for next gen systems...multiplatform and according to not only GI but a simple google search pointed me to 1up.com 's preview which also states a guess at the 360 and PS3.
SO to sum up "blank page" is along the lines of BS
Paul Miskimmon @ Jun 5th 2007 11:39PM
@flaming360
Half-Life, Doom, Quake, Hexen, Wolfenstien ... nahh, not missing much by not playing Halo (and I have a 360) :)
Tomas @ Jun 5th 2007 11:46PM
Mass Effect will keep me from crying to hard...
Knoxximus @ Jun 5th 2007 11:46PM
Isn't Squeenix making The Lost Remnant for 360? That kind kills the Xbox 360 blank page argument right there.
Besides, who needs it? We'll get awesome RPGs from Mistwalker, who is helmed by the man Square (primarily) owes all of it's foundation to.
Calvin @ Jun 5th 2007 11:48PM
"That pretty much nails the coffin shut on Final Fantasy XIII making its way to the Xbox 360 before the PS3 gets its act together with a price drop and some other solid titles. "
uhmm, no, in reality that means:
"That pretty much nails the coffin shut on Final Fantasy XIII making its way to the Xbox 360. Period."
Nice attempt again at trying to imply that it still may come to the 360, but just not in time.
Gamble20 @ Jun 5th 2007 11:53PM
Stop trying to comfort yourselves xbots. admit it, you can't get a major franchise.
it sucks, many people will want to get a PS3 (maybe I should say) because of this game, and no doubt it will be graphically one of the greatest games ever made. Its going to be awesome, and xbox fans cant have it.
but dont hang your heads in shame, youve taken DMC and many other exclusives. dont fret and crap on sony fans for being able to keep this one. You had your fun let us have ours. and as it has been mentioned countless times on this, you still have Halo 3.
an honest message from a sony fan (and as soon as they read that they will discount my opinion...typical I guess)
Gamble20 @ Jun 5th 2007 11:55PM

i'm not a big fan either, but it sells like crazy (see Pokemon)

Selling steadily in Japan? Is that a joke? Are we reading the same monthly numbers? 9000 systems compared to 2000? You can that selling steadily? 9000 is almost as bad as the 2000 MS is selling. North America's 175k vs 85k last month more then makes up for Japan's sales numbers for the next year. And how many JRPG's have been even been brought to US so far? Love to hear which ones you're talking about when you claim "with each of the JRPGs getting mehish sales".

You called it right - all the "I never cared about FF" xbots came crawling out of the woodwork. Halo 2.5 will keep them happy for years to come once they figure out how to cheat at multi-player. Seems to be the console of choice for those type of people.
Tel Prydain @ Jun 6th 2007 12:01AM
Japanese Rpgs < Western Rpgs
Set story < Player Choice
Established francise < New IP
Final Fantasy < Mass Effect
slacker164 @ Jun 6th 2007 12:03AM
I still can’t comprehend how anyone actually thought FFXIII would ever be on the 360. The sales are just awful in Japan, absolutely horrid. Also, JRPG fans around the world don’t seem to be buying it either. FF is a huge seller, but for the most part its fanbase is completely different than the Halo fanbase. The game would flop on the 360. That being said, FFXIII will most likely do as much for the PS3 as Monster Hunter did for the PSP. It’ll top the charts for a few weeks, then fade away with console sales dropping right back to where they were before the release. The only way FFXIII is going to really help turn things around for the PS3 is if its release coincides with a $200 price drop.

Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers will sell more copies than Final Fantasy XIII.
Crystal Chronicles for Gamecube was very good... impressive graphics (better graphics than any Final Fantasy on PS2), and a good story, good real time battles... to bad it focus to much in multiplayer (due to poor sales of the gamecube), but this wont be a problem in the Wii...
Shalex @ Jun 6th 2007 12:09AM
Well, honestly, i know i haven't liked a FF game since Sokoguchi left square. X, XI and XII were all mass market crap. But yeah, it's gonna sell. They could take a turd, put the word Final Fantasy on it and it'll sell.... (*cough* FFX-2*cough*Dirge of Ceberus*cough*)
But who am I kidding. I'll buy it, i'll play it for an hour, and probabbly try and play it in 10 min squirts... like i do FFXII.... and then complain about it cause it's not much fun. But at least i'll have a blast with Eteranl Sonata and Lost Oddessy. and Blue dragon.. which are published by MS... so those are remaining Xbox exclusive.
So.. the only people missing out on games.... are fanboys of a single console.... huh... shocking!
