PS3 ad deemed too violent, pulled
48
Another of Sony's "it was a good idea on paper" advertising campaigns has recently been pulled for being "too violent for public consumption". The ad for PlayStation 3 depicts a man with a black eye, stitches, and stab wounds beneath the words "STOCKS ARE LIMITED. THINGS COULD GET UGLY". A complaint lodged to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa said the ad was "irresponsible and offensive as it encourages crime and violence". The ad was withdrawn, and Sony's marketing department will be sleeping on the couch tonight.

well that is in poor taste. Seriously though, where are the stocks limited at? South Africa? SONY your PR Dept. has to be the worst in history. The PS3 fails.

Ludwig, you catch any of those ads? Or are you out there right now beating small children and mothers at a department store so you can secure yourself one of a "limited stock" of PS3s?
Take pictures.

Uhm... if they have to advertise to say that there is a shortage, presumably there isn't really a shortage.

"STOCKS ARE LIMITED" That sentence fits with Wii.

I'm sorry. I'm desensitised to Sony's shocks now. It's a shame too - I would have found this hilarious a couple of years ago :(

Sony just lobs them up for everybody.
whats most tragic, is that none of their famous PR moves they've done this year and last would even be considered questionable if the actual platform itself wasn't so underwhelming. it all could've actually applied.

Yeah can't wait to see where this is gonna go. Just wait for the SDF to arrive. By the way, if Microsoft did this, I would be saying the same shit about them or Nintendo. I guess in Nintendo's case it might be somewhat true.

im becoming completely desensitized to this aswell... its seems that at this point sony is intentionally making offensive campaign after offensive campaign, just to get noticed, fully knowing and ready to pull them right away... what a bunch of pussies. if they had any guts, they wouldnt pull the ads so fast, and if they had any creativity, they wouldnt have to resort to this sort of thing in the first place.

Sorry, gotta ask this question. Has PS3 even launched in South Africa? *checks* No, no it hasn't. So all the people saying they are in plentiful supply... where in South Africa? Not saying there will be a shortage when it launches but if we're going to bash Sony for false bravado here, let's wait for them to be proven wrong. Shall we?
And seriously. Everyone from Sega to Nintendo has cracked jokes about the violence surrounding PS3's launch. Can't Sony crack em too?

When I first read this, I thought it was referring to stock OPTIONS, which will get ugly as the PS3 sinks the Playstation department.
So in a way, my way that is, this is good advertising since there is an element of truth behind it...

Good insight =) I like the wording :P
Coming this christmas! Sony reduces the price on the PS3 by $150 and people start thinking of buying it!
Also Christmas Special, in a landmark decision Nintendo decides to increase the price of the Wii by $100, store shelves still empty!

-Fanboy 1 just picked up a Wii instead
-Huh? Fanboy 2 just picked up a 360
-Apparently they are cheaper :S

i personally don't see the problem with this sony ad at all and actually find it somewhat amusing. sure they're lying about the stocks being limited...but of course they're going to do that so some poor sap who doesn't read joystiq or some other blog will be like, "OMG! IF I DON'T GET ONE NOW THEY'LLL ALL BE GONE!!!"
now i love nintendo through and through, but i think there's a time and a place for people and bashing sony's ad campaign (which isn't done in house, mind you) is pretty pointless. there are plenty of other more worthwhile things to bash sony for right now.

"The Musica Playstation 3 advertisement..."
A quick search shows Musica to be an online-retailer in South Africa. It would seem this ad is another example of a third-party giving Sony a black-eye with their ad work. Again, should be somebody at Sony looking at this stuff and giving it a yay or nay, but it looks like this is not exactly an advertisment by Sony themselves.
You may now continue your regularly scheduled Sony bashing.

PS3 stocks can't be that limited in South Africa. All those Nigerian scammers should be flooding the market with PS3s bought with stolen credit cards.

heh Slaziman, sorry good point.
there is absolutely no reasoning behing "this is a living" besides the frustrated filmmaker at the ad agency pining for an award.
and even if PS3s were in heavy demand, they shouldn't be encouraging violence at retail.
unless they're sending literally 3 units to South Africa expect a launch just as 'eventful' as europe and asia. it should be a picture of a guy zzzzzzzzzzzzzzing.

I've figured it out! Sony is trying to pull a Producers on the PS3!! If they make it such a colossal failure then they don't have to pay back the investors and they can take that money and spend it on vacations!

Here is a further marketing suggestion: A picture of a man that is computer manipulated in a natural-looking way to allow for a PS3 sticking out of his rectum.
The story behind the picture is that the man nagged his friend to borrow his PS3 so much that his friend exclaimed "Here you go!" and shoved it up his ass(while taking care not damage it, of course) and promptly went and bought another system for himself because it is too good to go without. The viewer is invited to infer the back story and how it shows the desirability for themselves, which again makes them more likely to buy it as they have incurred a mental cost considering it that would be a meaningless sacrifice if they did not buy one.
PS: You can have the idea for 1 PS3.

well... it's advertising, you know? You have to say sh.t that'll sell your products. So by making people think "the stock is limited" they try to make them rush and buy a ps3 while they can find one.
