LEGO MMO dubbed 'Universe,' bricks internet early 2008 [update 1]
The LEGO Group has announced today that their upcoming MMO will be called LEGO Universe. The game, in development by NetDevil, is slated for release in the first quarter of 2008.According to the press release, the game is poised to "provide a child-safe alternative to other MMOGs on the market. As a player, you'll be able to customize your mini-figs and interact in the universe as any character you choose, providing unique opportunities for players to expand and explore with their creations."
We get the impression that there won't be an option to freely build with LEGO bricks in the world, given the possible NSFW imagery that one could (and undoubtedly would) create. The world of LEGOs has proved to be profitable in the games industry with LEGO Star Wars; also due in 2008 is LEGO Batman.

I wonder if it'll have a whole sandbox thing going on, letting people attack each other's structures..

Well, there's already an mmo lego-type game where you can build stuff out of bricks and subsequently destroy them: http://www.roblox.com/

I wonder if they might divide the world into zones... like the ice zone, space zone, pirate zone, etc. like the different types of lego collections. Perhaps they could even have things like the star wars zone, batman zone, spiderman zone, etc. for the different movie-oriented lego collections.

They need to make their game better then that if they want to succeed, and I doubt they will if you cant free build.

This is great, because the 12 yr olds that play WoW have a better suited place to annoy people.

#4: That's actually a pretty good idea. Then people will travel around the "universe", and instead of having stars or levels, people will get different body parts from different worlds, so a really good player will have an eye-patch head piece, police left arm, knight right arm, racecar driver torso, and robot pants.

I'll never understand the concept of a Lego-based game where you can't build what you want.
Why? Because parents are worried about what people may-or-may not build? Might as well ban your child from going to the beach because someone MIGHT make an innappropriate drawing in the sand.
Stifling creativity for the purpose of "protecting" children is something I'm beginning to hate about the world.
