Myst coming to the DS
The game that practically launched a genre, Myst has remained one of the most engaging (or boring, depending on who you ask) and mysterious adventure titles ever released. The series has expanded to include sequels, an MMOG, and most recently a release on the PSP. Now, Midway is preparing to port the aging title to the DS so we can finally live out our oldest Myst fantasies: jabbing Sirrus and Achenar with a stylus. For starters, Myst DS will include a brand new age to explore as well as the Rime Age from realMYST. The game's source code has been re-written specifically for the DS, new sounds and clips are scattered throughout, and the video and audio have been re-mastered as well. Touch screen control is a given, but Midway hasn't revealed how both screens will be utilized. Keep an eye out for Myst DS this November in Europe.

handheld and boring as hell
typoink @ Jun 7th 2007 1:24PM
Rime isn't new, it was originally introduced in realMyst (Myst ported to a realtime 3D engine). Makes me wonder if Myst DS will be static images or realtime. Huh.
JodyAnthony @ Jun 7th 2007 1:31PM
the most boring game in all of existance.
Jerk Face @ Jun 7th 2007 1:37PM
I've never been a huge fan of the series, but I bet Myst could turn out pretty well on the DS. Mystery/Puzzle games in general do, like Trace Memory and such.
Crrash @ Jun 7th 2007 1:35PM
nono it seems it has the rime age AND a new age
CapAmerica @ Jun 7th 2007 1:36PM
About F*cKen Time!
I never understood why Myst came out on the PSP first when the obvious system it should have been on was the DS.
Chris @ Jun 7th 2007 2:41PM
Now lets bring in the Journeyman Project!
Kurt @ Jun 7th 2007 2:11PM
Now, Lucasarts, start releasing your old games to DS!

I have actually been wanting to play Myst and Riven again lately. I tried playing Riven in Classic (I am an OS X user) but it crashed. I would love to see Myst or realMyst released for XBLA.

Well, off the top of my head I'd say it has something to do WITH STORAGE SPACE! Four disc PC game = easy port to a 1.5GB PSP UMD. I'm interested in seeing how much was redone, shrunk, compressed to hell, or just in general how they remade the game on DS. It is a very cinematic heavy game, after all. And those cartridges aren't friendly to that.
Micah Neumark @ Jun 7th 2007 2:36PM
@sheppy: The original myst fit on one CD. Now if its real Myst might be a different story, but who knows. But you can get 256 MB DS Carts now, so no trouble anymore (remember that cinematics are much smaller on the DS compared to PC since the screen size and res are much lower).

when is Monkey Island gonna come to the DS?
Harlock @ Jun 7th 2007 3:02PM
In 90s didn't exist good compression for videos and images. Remember Wing Commander III and IV, with multiples discs and bad quality of video (for today standards).

I was never fond of Myst, even back in the day when it was the only CD-Rom game available...
But, OMG! Great idea about LucasArts releasing their adventure games for the DS... Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, the Indiana Jones games... That would be sweet.
And how about Interplay release Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgement Rights.
Or how about all the Sierra Quest games- one series per cartridge would be so cool.
Final Prototype @ Jun 7th 2007 4:22PM
I'm hoping this hits North America too. Any word on that?
I've tried playing Myst and Riven so many times back in the day. I loved the concept and the flow of the game but I could never quite grasp wtf I needed to do. Now 10+ years later, hopefully I'll have a friggin' clue.
sheppy @ Jun 7th 2007 4:27PM
I would prefer them to bring back 7th Guest. And NOT 11th Hour. Seriously, Stauff talking to you through a fricking PDA?!?
Also, good call on single disc Myst. Wasn't Riven four disc then?
Crono @ Jun 7th 2007 4:35PM
Don't bet on it, Final Prototype

I'd be VERY surprised if there's another age in addition to Rime. Cyan's already up to their neck trying to keep content flowing for Myst Online: Uru Live, and I can't imagine Midway getting permission to add an age to the game. I do hope this makes it to the US though, I'd love to revisit parts of Myst in a portable format.
Regarding Rime, it'll probably be like the PSP version. They used the same old stills from the original release, then went through Rime and took stills of all of the areas that were rendered in real-time 3D and reworked them slightly to make the navigation/puzzles work in a slideshow format.
Final comment... regarding the discs...
Myst - One CD
Riven - Five CDs
Exile - Four CDs
Revelation - Two DVDs
End of Ages- Two CDs
realMYST - One CD

RE: LucasArts old games:
There already exists a port of ScummVM for the DS, so you can bring most of your SCUMM-based games to the DS.
Of course, this requires having a flash cart.
http://scummvm.org/downloads.php
Still, if you have a flash cart, some old SCUMM games lying about, and some time to fool around with homebrew, it's worth the effort.
Sadly, though, later SCUMM games (like The Dig, Full Throttle, or Curse of Monkey Island) won't work due to memory issues.

- Ughh...my friend let me borrow the game before. It was in my computer for 5 mins (Installation time included) until I realized it was a boring point and click adventure.
- I think clicked on 2 or 3 things until I grew bored. Maybe it was the whole 1995 feeling I hated. Well, I guess my friend will buy this...
aMac @ Jun 7th 2007 6:50PM
Oh god yes. It's about time I went through Myst again. I wonder how much I can remember.
Also, I feel sorry for people who dismiss this game. I'm having a hard time trying to explain how good the series is without offhandedly insulting them.
Tomoki @ Jun 7th 2007 6:53PM
DO WANT
Velvetone Fusion @ Jun 7th 2007 7:55PM
I still love point-and-click adventures. I guess because they were the only games that would work well on my computer for a long time, plus they usually lasted a while. I still get giddy when I see abandonware like Beneath A Steel Sky or B.A.T. II: The Koshan Conspiracy. Unfortunately they're a dying genre.
t_m @ Jun 8th 2007 6:52AM
Hmm.. never ever played this.. maybe its time to finally check it out.
I hope it makes some cash, so that lucasarts might pull their heads out of their asses and bring all their scumm games to the ds.
(Not to mention Jedi Knight and Tie Fighter ;-) )
HeatherHellion @ Jun 14th 2007 8:59PM
I cut my teeth on adventure games--Pajama Sam comes to mind XD I would so buy that if it was ported to the DS. Really.
Anyway, I remember getting Myst when I was but like, 12, and I loved it, despite the fact I barely understood a thing. I had Masterpiece edition, so I used the hints like a mofo. XD
In any event I'm so buying Myst DS, even if I have to import it.
