Next SimCity changes hands
We brought word of the new SimCity title earlier in the week and now 1UP reports that SimCity Societies won't be developed by Maxis, which is presumably swamped with not finishing Spore. The reins will be passed to Tilted Mill Entertainment, which you might know from their work on Caesar IV.
Surprising no one, the internet wasted no time in losing its mind. We see some of the first evidence in the hit forum thread "You killed Sim City!". Showing more consideration (or is it cunning?) than we've ever been accused of having, Tilted Mill president Chris Beatrice tried to calm fears in the thread, writing "This SC is not a realistic urban simulation, which I understand, to many, represents the heart of what SC is. No one is blind to that. And if you're just completely turned off, even angered by the mere notion of any game called SimCity that is not a detailed, realistic urban simulator, I absolutely understand that viewpoint, and absolutely respect it."
Looks like SCS will be the big game in this month's Games for Windows Magazine, so we'll reserve judgment until we lay our eyes on that. Or, you know, until the game comes out and we actually play it. One of the two.

You killed Sim City!

Last Sim city I played was Sim City SNES. I'll gladly try something new and different. If it doesn't work, I'm sur eMaxis will go back and do Sim City 7000
Anam @ Jun 7th 2007 10:25AM
@Chris
You missed out on SimCity 2000? That was by far the best in the series. After that, I started not caring...
Jay @ Jun 7th 2007 11:08AM
WTF :|
I want SimCity 5! I LOVED SimCity 4.
SimCity is being date raped and shall never be the same again.
jay @ Jun 7th 2007 11:10AM
in my humble opinion everything barring SC3k was rubbish. Especially 4. I'm hoping the next SC will be a little more like 3, a lot less than 4, and a larger part something new.
Brandon @ Jun 7th 2007 11:10AM
Its unfortunate that SimCity is losing some of its "Sim". I was really hoping that the next simcity would add an even greater level of detail, like allowing major factories that have thousands of jobs. Why would anyone want a simcity that doesn't actually deal with making an urban simulation? I guess if things are turning out like they sound, i'll be sticking to SimCity4.

Why make a SC that is not a realistic urban simulation??
Thats like making a halo game thats not a shooter.
Just fkn stupid, they are basicly flipping of the SC fans.

It's called evolution, kids. As you all have peeviously said, just play one of the older ones, as those are all pretty much one and the same at their core. Honestly, I only ever seriously got into the very first SC and then lost interest after the second one. I think it'll be nice to see how this one plays when it arrives.
Remember the good old days of Maxis simming everything? Let's recount those golden turds of fun: SimFarm, SimAnt, SimEarth with its ginormous instruction manual, SimCopter, and the great chunky and clunky Streets of Sim City. I always wanted to play the SimPinball one, but never got a chance, though having since acquired PinMAME and played all my old fave tables on it, I couldn't care less to now. SimTower was fun when it came out, though playing it on regular speed on a current computer is hilarious as it just blazes through the days. I actually remember having to buy some extra memory at the time that game was new to be able to play it on whatever crap computer we had then. Wow.
Anam @ Jun 7th 2007 11:28AM
I loved SimFarm. Never played the others.

You killed SimCity!
Regardless of your opinions, SimCity4 had lots of fans and was very realistic. Most fans for the past two years have made a wishlist for SimCity5 relating to taking more control, more realism including weather, no grid, better transport options etc.
If your gonna make a new game... fine. But if it isn't a REALISTIC URBAN PLANNER then it isn't SimCity!!! R.I.P. SimCity!

Two words: Halo Wars

If they were calling "Halo Wars" "Halo 4" you might have a point.
This whole thing is pretty lame i'm not gonna buy some half-ass Sim City that has nothing to do with urban planning just based upon the brand name.

This game isn't being called SimCity 5. It's called SimCity Societies. It's more of a spin-off than a true sequel. Besides wouldn't you prefer the next "real" SimCity to be developed by Maxis?
This is sort of like the Guitar Hero Encore:Rocks the 80s. It's more of an expansion pack. Maybe it will even be a budget title.
No, scratch that. It's being published by EA.
Mike @ Jun 7th 2007 2:29PM
Actually making a simcity that isn't an urban simulator makes the title a misnomer. Urban simulator is what "simcity" means for goodness sake. If it isn't an urban sim they could have changed the name entirely, but I guess that might cause a hit in sales. However, I think that it is an urban simulator. He only said that it wasn't realistic. I'm not really worried about realism so much.
Marty @ Jun 7th 2007 3:21PM
why are people defending simcity societies? (I guess it goes without saying that they're people who haven't even played or have only played the original 4 games for 5 minutes collectively)
Almack64 @ Jun 7th 2007 3:39PM
So much speculation and so little information. (But I guess that's the norm in this industry) In any case the idea that "Sim City" is not a Urban Simulation game is just wrong, but I guess we'll just have to wait until some real info comes in before we can make some proper judgements.
sirpilf @ Jun 7th 2007 3:54PM
as long as it keeps the same realism and control as the past games i wouldnt mind but judging from that screenshot it looks more like an RTS... although what i always wanted was a game like simcity 4 but with a military portion similar to rise of nations or empire earth.
Wirestone @ Jun 7th 2007 5:45PM
Um. I hate to break it to you, but there is no more Maxis. It's just another EA brand. Will Wright has a separate group of people working on Spore, but they're not Maxis.
The studio no longer exists.
From Wikipedia: "For many years, Maxis was a traditional studio located in Walnut Creek, California (and before that, Orinda, California), but in February 2004 the division was folded into EA's Redwood Shores headquarters.
"Will Wright's studio (currently developing Spore) is located in Emeryville, California."

This just ruined my whole week.
