Akuma-matata, Street Fighter HD shows off new character
Last week Capcom showed off another character sprite for their upcoming (here we go again with the title) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix , or SSFIITHDR, for XBLA and PSN. Capcom swears that the Ken model is how he'll look in the game and we really can't wait to see him in motion. This week, to give a better comparison, Capcom is showing off Akuma in his original and redone versions for a clearer comparison. And they still swear this is how he'll look in the game.
If you don't know who Akuma is, don't feel bad, he was a secret character until Street Fighter Alpha 2 and was only a secret boss in Super Street Fighter II Turbo -- perhaps not the best character to choose on this little promo leakfest that Capcom is doing. Capcom is now asking what character you'd like to see next. Us? We'd like to ask for a character in a comparison shot that we actually know well. It might be nice to see Chun-Li's upcoming HD curves on those thunder thighs of hers.

I am little confused... "[Akuma] was only a secret non-playable boss in Street Fighter II Turbo"
He is playable via a code in Super Street Fighter II Turbo (you forgot the Super by the way). Can you please clarify that if it is correct or not.
Thanks!

Akuma is da shite!11!
ExMcloud @ Jun 8th 2007 12:39PM
YES!!! I cant wait till this realeases.. And they need to remake TS also
TianXia @ Jun 8th 2007 1:18PM
Damn, now I really want this game. I wish they were coming out with it for the Wii.
A PC version would also be nice, I could actually use a 6-button controller or an arcade stick or something.
That would be nice. Give us this game in the form of an online-enabled PC fighter!
ugtv.org @ Jun 8th 2007 12:51PM
I'm confused by all the disbelief. It's a 2D flat shaded sprite. That's easy pickins for the mega-processors inside todays game console. Or did you think this would work on a SNES?
Vik @ Jun 8th 2007 12:49PM
"..he was a secret character until Street Fighter Alpha 2 and was only a secret non-playable boss in Street Fighter II Turbo"
He was a playable character in Super Street Fighter II X (SSTF2T in the US). But to actually make him appear as a selectabel character was a pain...well for me anyways.
Vik @ Jun 8th 2007 12:52PM
edit: selectabel --> selectable
edit: SSTF2T --> SSF2T
Oops! Should've checked my errors!

I think the fact that this is going to look much better in higher def sprites than something like, say, Guilty Gear, is what is pushing the "this is great" aspect of the comments. UDON does good work and having them do these sprites is like having the project touched by the god of combat.

I can't wait to play Odin's Sphere when I get off work now....
Geo @ Jun 8th 2007 12:59PM
Nahh street fighter looks too cartoonish
Zeruel @ Jun 8th 2007 12:59PM
I'd like to see the revamp of Balrog (Boxer) most of all. The guy's a friggin' beast in ST already, so it would be awesome if they made him look even more menacing then he does in the original version.
I see many of these SF remix threads becoming hotbeds for players to complain about the 1385789435 remakes of SF2. You guys need to understand that this game is obviously not for you. There is an audience out there for Street Fighter - they've played the game for years and love to play against other skilled opponents. The majority of the crybabies on these forums are 1p fighting game players who also cry about stupid shit like "throwing is cheap", "you do the same two moves all day", or my new fave that someone yelled at me over Live "you block too much".
So in my professional opinion: shut up and go elsewhere. Thank you.
Konny @ Jun 8th 2007 1:07PM
The crasy things is that the sprites are taller (550+ pixels) than the Wii can output (480).. lol. The Sagat sprite (on its side) would probably consume all of Wii's video output area.
Vik @ Jun 8th 2007 1:08PM
Yeah, the code was:
Play as Akuma
Highlight Ryu and hold for 3 seconds then,
Highlight T.Hawk and hold for 3 seconds then,
Highlight Guile and hold for 3 seconds then,
Highlight Cammy and hold for 3 seconds Finally
Highlight Ryu again and hold for 3 seconds then,
press all 3 punches and Start at the same time.
Works in the arcade version, the Anniversary collection for the PS2, and the version for the Dreamcast. Don't remember what other platfomrs SSF2T came out on?
I think any re-iteration of the Street Fighter franchise is always welcome...well, maybe not all of the EX series.
Matthew @ Jun 8th 2007 1:11PM
This is obviously prerendered CGI.
Papercut @ Jul 25th 2007 6:27AM
It jus 2D rendering people!! Whats more is this game is gonna be run on ps3s and 360s!! If they can render gears of war to look so damn good they can render super 2D sprites.
supersocialist @ Jun 8th 2007 1:18PM
Dear Capcom,
I'm going to second the "let's see some of Chun-Li's new hi-def curves" request. Cammy too, plz. Give us some high kicks with a little upskirt, eh?
Jose @ Jun 8th 2007 1:13PM
No, thank you Zeruel. I love Street Fighter because button mashers don't usually luck out nearly as much as in most slow ass 3D fighters.
Also, it's really nice to be able to admit that you have the hots for a two dimensional character. I chased swimmer and soccer player chicks all through out high school just because they had legs almost that hot.
ManInABox @ Jun 8th 2007 1:25PM
They did actually make a version of SSF2T for computers, and I owned it. It ran on DOS only and had a frame rate that was, to say the least, inadequate. It was made even worse by the fact that the six-button controller that I hade for the PC wasn't compatible with DOS games, and I therefore had to play using the keyboard. Still, I can remember being very excited by the prospect of "super moves" before the VS series completely burned them out.

I have Super Street Fighter II Turbo for The Panasonic 3DO

I'd like to see the redrawn Sheng Long sprites myself. ^_^
I hear EGM's hot on the trail of those.

TianXia: Why would Capcom release this game for the Wii, the only system that has a worse standard D-Pad than the Xbox 360?
Ken @ Jun 11th 2007 4:45PM
ManInABox -
I played the PC SSFT2T -- I played that game to death. Was it just me, or were the character sprites redrawn for that version as well? They looked more stylized than the sprites in the arcade version, almost a half-way step towards the Alpha 2 sprite style?
Norm @ Jun 8th 2007 2:01PM
Actually, the wii d-pad is better. Take the SFII/Hyper Challenge!
arrrgh @ Jun 8th 2007 2:09PM

Well if you actually PLAYED the wii, you would know that the d pad is damn decent, metal slug/nes/genesis/tg-16 play like a dream using the remote...and the classic controller has the best dpad since SNES feels the same as an old school pad... good try tho kid
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Jun 8th 2007 2:32PM
Arrrgh: No, it isn't.
I've played tons of the VC games with that crappy D-Pad. It's horrid in Wii games, it's horrid in VC games.

"If you don't know who Akuma is, don't feel bad, "
What?!? Seriously this is the best sprite to have be the second one they reveal. The fanbase this game is going to has to know who Akuma is, the layman person who hasn't really played a lot of Street Fighter may not, but this game is obviously catering to the fanbase, and the fanbase should know Akuma.
Brian @ Jun 8th 2007 3:12PM
"We'd like to ask for a character in a comparison shot that we actually know well."
What did you only see the movie?
just rent the game once?
Ryu, chun-li, ken and akuma are the cool kids club that move between all of them. I challange you to find a machine somewhere with players that dont know who akuma is.
perfectchaos @ Jun 8th 2007 4:08PM
someone who writes for a video game blog doesn't know who akuma is?
i could see if it were alex, urien, twelve, or remy i could understand...but damn. akuma's been featured in pretty much every version of street fighter ever since SSFIIT, not to mention the infinite capcom vs. spinoff games.
BPM @ Jun 8th 2007 5:11PM
What's wrong with Akuma's mouth in the second image? It looks like it was air-brushed away...
Shadow Hog @ Jun 8th 2007 6:00PM
"Works in the arcade version, the Anniversary collection for the PS2, and the version for the Dreamcast. Don't remember what other platfomrs (sic) SSF2T came out on?"
Saturn and PS1, IIRC. In the Saturn version you just highlight Ryu, hold L&R, and select. Easy-peasy. I'd imagine the PS1 version to be similar, but I don't know if it'd be L1&R1 or L2&R2...

If any of you SF fans are interested, I made a sweet arse Akuma widescreen wallpaper for you all to enjoy.

@26: The real question is: How can you possibly play any fighting game on a regular controller? None of the controllers are fit for em. Arcade sticks are the only way to go buddy.
Drew @ Jun 9th 2007 6:19PM
SF2 Turbo and SSF2 Turbo are different games.

Looks good but will it animate as well.
