Halo 3 Collector's Edition: lacking in mysterious extra discs [update]

Update: Presenting the Halo 3 Collector's Edition sans the mysterious "Game Disc Two." We still don't care how many discs the game is on, but you'll want to learn more in our look at Bungie's Weekly Update.
[Original post follows]
Oh no. Or rather, oh noes. Representing the average person, compared to the Standard Edition's luckless vagrant or the Legendary Edition's overweight sultan, the Collector's Edition of Halo 3 can now be seen sporting two game discs and a bonus disc. What does that mean, exactly? Well, it depends on who you ask.
Just one logical assumption (see update below) would be that the first disc contains the single-player campaign, whilst the second functions as an entry into the game's multiplayer arena. Not an outrageous conclusion to make, but certainly not a very entertaining one. Perhaps we'd be better off seeing this as a message about the inadequate capacity of DVD, a frightening glimpse into a world where switching weapons also requires us to exert physical effort and switch discs. Discs, as in plural!
This is a dark day for us immobile couch denizens, with no ray of hope in sight. Could somebody hold us?

I'm confused. Halo isn't exactly a....giant game compared to RPGS and such.
JodyAnthony @ Jun 8th 2007 1:14PM
if its on two discs I am going to kill myself. dont do that to me, bungie.

Jody, you're so emo sometimes. I wish my grass was as emo as you, so it would cut itself.
Ba-da-BING!

oh oh somebody is in need of blu ray!!
Grindstone @ Jun 8th 2007 1:16PM
I could care less; swapping out SP disc for MP disc is still $200 cheaper than it's competitor. Besides, if the SP mode has 4 person online co-op, then there really isn't much of an issue here for me to complain about.
I kinda figured this would happen eventually, but I don't see it as a big concern for gamers.
ruben magana @ Jun 8th 2007 1:17PM
hooray for cutscenes!!!!
vidGuy @ Jun 8th 2007 1:18PM
Disc 1 is the same as the Standard Edition.
Disc 2 is editor tools similar to the Halo 2 PC's map editor.
Lazyboy @ Jun 8th 2007 1:22PM
I'd bet the multiplayer is on both discs, and the single player is just split up. I'd hate to have to go from single to multiplayer by switching discs, as everyone will be inviting you to games, but switching discs half-way through campaign shouldnt be tough, as you will only switch once, and you will know which levels are on which discs.
Josh @ Jun 8th 2007 1:22PM
Has anyone considered the idea that one game disc is for the game itself, and one is for the rumored map editor?
I highly doubt Bungie would have separate discs for single and multiplayer, on the simple grounds that it would be inconvenient for players to easily move from campaign to multiplayer and back, and need to swap and load discs everytime, especially with online co-op.
I think that (if it is a factual part of the final game) the second disc has all of the tools we would need to create custom maps and other editing features such as weapon and vehicle spawns. Hopefully this will be an option and would allow us to load custom maps into custom games only, and then share them with friends.
razer @ Jun 8th 2007 1:24PM
@9 - You beat me too it. This has nothing to do with disc capacity issues!
I see already a couple Blu-ray comments and before it gets out of hand by the Sony PS3tards!!
THIS IS NOT A MULTIPLE DISC GAME!
Andrew @ Jun 8th 2007 1:25PM
I guess the next question is does the standard edition also sport 2 game discs?
jason w @ Jun 8th 2007 1:26PM
BAN THOMAS.... Man that lent alot to the discussion didnt it.
Konny @ Jun 8th 2007 1:26PM
MS is trying to sell as many copies as possible.. so:
- MP on both discs: no, you could give the second copy to someone else to play MP
- MP and Campaign on separate discs: no, same problem as above
So, Disc 1 will have the MP plus the first part of the single player campaign. Disc 2 will only have the 2nd part of the campaign. HD videos take up space ya know!
rokorre @ Jun 8th 2007 1:27PM
lol maybe its all the cutscenes . . . . that would suck "finally that level f'ing sucked" ::please put in the cutscene disc to continue::
BulletToothTony @ Jun 8th 2007 1:27PM
@ 13 HA!!!
Thomas is an Idiot @ Jun 8th 2007 1:28PM
Maybe the second disc is for installing the multiplayer maps? Then you could use the first disc to play either single or multiplayer. Or just a map editor, who knows. I sure ain't going to cry like a sony fanboy and say it needs blu-ray. Do you idiots remember that gran truismo 1 & 2 was on 2 discs? Derrrrrr.
Geo @ Jun 8th 2007 1:29PM

What are you talking about this is one of the biggest game ever, well beside Half Life 2.........
Triforceowner @ Jun 8th 2007 1:30PM
Isn't this a good thing? I'm getting twice the content I was expecting. Who cares if I have to swap the disc when I would have to do that normally at the beginning and end of my playing session. I'd rather swap a disc like a normally do than pay an extra $500 (that's a personal price not the normal one) to swap discs in the normal way as well. Thank you for not jacking up the price of your console with the almost useless HD-DVD built in player Microsoft.
BulletToothTony @ Jun 8th 2007 1:30PM
@ 12 HA!!! so they want to waste more money in discs?? ok!! come on man don't lie to yourselves to make yourself feel better
Geo @ Jun 8th 2007 1:31PM

Oh dear a map editor would be the bee's knees. And I will be right there to take out said knees with a plasma grenade and a smile.
Myrpok @ Jun 8th 2007 1:34PM
@ razer
I had heard the rumors of it including a map editor. I can honestly say FarCry's map editor kept me on that game longer than any game other than Halo 2. I still will refuse to believe Halo 3 will come with a map editor for one reason: if I believe it and raise my hopes up and it turns out not to be true, my brain will be reduced to jelly mush from pure let-down shock. If Halo 3 has a map editor I will shit a brick where I sit or stand when I hear the official announcement.
GodisaMyth @ Jun 8th 2007 1:37PM
Look closely at the discs
Disc upper right hand corner....game disc 2
Disc below it...bonus features
Disc still in the case...game disc 1
Well, well, well,
Multiple GAME discs...and I will bet you that this is the first of many more to come.
I guess we need Blu-ray after all.
Remember, Microsoft said DVD9 is big enough.
Microsoft said 1080p was not necessary nor possible.
Microsoft said HDMI was unnecessary.
Now who is the bigger liar?
Halo 3 Limited Edition...$100+
Halo 3 graphics...Halo 2.5
Having to get up to change a disc again and again...Priceless.
Daniel D @ Jun 8th 2007 1:39PM
Who really cares if you have to change discs? I mean really, remember final fantasy 7+8? Nothing that happens often I really feel this is a moot point for people who suggest it is an inappropriate format.
JimyD @ Jun 8th 2007 1:40PM
Now we know the single-player campaign will actually have an ending.
ssuk @ Jun 8th 2007 1:40PM
2 discs != twice as long as a normal game. Though when game time is measured in bytes, let me know.
Geo @ Jun 8th 2007 1:41PM
You know what i think people the single campaing will be too long to fit in only one disc, that`s way they have more levels in the second disc......
Kevin D @ Jun 8th 2007 1:41PM
2nd disc is either the map editor or maybe they're giving away HALO2 and HALO1 as freebee's to the special edition people... Possible...
And MS is trying to downplay the BR crap, so its not needed.. Heck. look at Oblivion... It fit....
Stop the whining...LOL...
Phranctoast @ Jun 8th 2007 1:41PM
while switching discs isnt that big of a deal, the fact that some games will have more than 1 disc does however justify the use of blu ray.
aegies @ Jun 8th 2007 1:42PM
"I guess we need Blu-ray after all."
If the game is shipping, and shipping with two discs, doesn't it kind of demonstrate that we don't? Just kinda? If the game were postponed for a year and then canceled, with Bungie proclaiming "OMGZORS WE D1DT HAV TEH SPAZE", then you might have a point there. But two discs has never hurt a game before.

The Legendary Edition will be released in limited quantities and arrive in a highly collectible Spartan helmet case that no hardcore "Halo" fan should be without, along with two bonus disks full of supplemental content. The first disk will provide exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage and videos, including a high-definition "Making of 'Halo 3'" documentary showcasing the Bungie team and its effort to create the most anticipated title in the industry's history; numerous high-definition featurettes documenting the creative design processes involved in developing the game; and even a look at some early game concepts and their evolution through the game's development. The disk will also include an audio-visual calibration tool, never before seen on a video game and custom designed by the "Halo 3" graphics and audio team to make the most of fans' high-definition home theaters, for the ultimate "Halo 3" and Xbox 360™ audio and video performance.
The second bonus disk, an exclusive to the Legendary Edition, will include completely remastered cinematic material from "Halo: Combat Evolved" and "Halo 2," supplemented with developer commentaries, to provide a refresher course on the thrilling "Halo" story so far, and a featurette documenting a day in the life at Bungie. Exclusive content from the creative minds behind Machinima artists "Red vs. Blue" and "This Spartan Life" will also be included.

"I guess we need Blu-ray after all."
Don't confuse needs with wants.
For a linear game like most shooters, JRPGs, etc., multiple game discs do not present much of an issue. Yeah, it may "suck", but it won't happen often at all, especially when you consider how much of a focus online deathmatch is for the Halo series. The games where there's a possibility of it presenting a design issue would be the "sandbox" ones, like Grand Theft Auto 4 (which may fit fine on a DVD-9 in the end, who knows).
There's a big difference between inserting disc 2 when you're on stage 16 of 29, and having to insert disc 2 every time you cross a bridge going back to downtown.

Maybe you put the second GAME disc in the HDDVD drive thats sitting around... after all, no console should be without TWO optical drives.
kabes @ Jun 8th 2007 1:47PM
Halo games have real-time cinematics, so it's not that. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions at all yet.

I finally realized why the Sony Trolls on this thread are can't comprehend swapping discs. It must be because they have no idea what it is like to swap a disc on a next gen platform when they've had the same game in their PS3 since launch.
See, it isn't hard to sink to your level, trolls. Just because Microsoft didn't put an HD media disc into their console, does not mean the gaming experience is any worse. I have to change my disc for the health of the system every time I want to turn on or shut down my console. I'm swapping discs no matter what.
