Oh yes, pressing white button on the xbox controller was alright but the damn D-pad is so out of the way lets get rid of that press to talk!

Yes having to move your thumb to push the button sucks, but you are forgetting the REAL crappy part about push-talk:

That frikkin razor sharp beeping noise that assaults your choclea every time you click the button. It's like my own personal midget hand, grating it's nails across the chalkboard of my ear.

*clicks button* SHHPPPPAAAARRKKKK
ugh. Hey guys, let's get the flag!
*release button* SHHHHPAAAAARRRRKK

Yes, pushing the button to talk irritated me and I rolled my eyes every time I had to do it.

I also play Gears of War and as much as I think Gears could benefit from inheriting Halo 3's multiplayer system to the letter this is the one area where I think Gears has the superior design.

Something else they should work on is the sound seeing as when there is lag the voices of other players start cutting off nonstop. Really irritating...

My soundspoof.com livelihood depends on being able to have at least proximity chat with the other team and in rumble pit.

Bring back the chat please.

Open chat? I think it is great until some 9 year old sings "Elmos song" the whole game. Still Open chat sounds good.

la-la, la-la,
la-la, la-la,
Master Chief's song

Halo 2's multiplayer suffered from the lack of open chat. If it's not in three, I'm very willing to pass on the game.

... i guess i'm the outsider here, but i prefer PTT. although its a little harder in halo 3, i got used to it pretty fast. the "beep" could use a bit 'o retooling, but ptt is better than having half of your team having a conversation about Lost. that's a problem in gears- its hard to have teamwork when half your team is chatting. although teamwork isn't essential to gears.

With open chat, the game could be soo much different, for all the reasons stated in this post. I think this is definitely needed. It can even be optional, but I'm sure most people would just keep it open.

Its funny how everything is suppose to be advanced, i.e. space travel but the humanity in Halo can not create a secure radio...

The white button was ok, because if I was being attacked I could still run away and tell my team mates where I was before I died or to get backup. Having to use the D-pad renders you immobile for a split second, and as we all know that is all it takes for someone to get the kill.

Being a huge Halo player, and playing in several MLG tournaments I am all for open chat... it's like that at events anyways... and helps keep your head in the game and hands on the controller.

Since it is easier than ever to mute the ass clown who sings and talks to himself the whole match I support open chat!

For the record I do sing from time to time but never non-stop.

I vote to keep it like it is. Any that has played halo online for 3mins knows that you only have to push a button to talk to teamates across the battlefield. Proximity chat works well for teamwork and really limits the amount of random b/s you have to hear from people online. Think of how bad chat in pre game lobbies can get,(racist, sexist, or just plain stupid) and extend that for the duration of a match and you have open chat in halo 3.

Prox chat ftw.

Me and my friends would open up a chat window because you died the instant you press the D.

We all decided there should be an option in the menu for open chat, open team chat, rubbish D-pad chat. That way everyone is happy.

I also think they need to make a Rainbow Six Vegas style matchmaker. For social matches atleast you need to be able to choose the match you want, veto isn't good enough, you just got stuck playing Valhalla over and over.

I want to scroll through a list of available matches only those in Lobby and then tell everyone that they are Haxxors without pressing the D-pad.

i really don't understand, UNREAL CHAMPIONSHIP for the original xbox had open chat, it's not like it's a new idea, they need it.

and for some odd reason, the mods on the bungie board support it blindly, giving lame excuses like"It prevents game unrelated conversations from interupting".

The simple fact is this: Bungie spent so much effort preventing you from having to hear people you don't want to, they put up a barrier from hearing the people you want to.

Push-to-Chat is lame. Most people know that. Open it up Bungie and make it option by the player and not system wide. Default to open chat.

Don't these developers play other games?

Not to mention that we don't need to hear, nor would our teammates necessarily want to broadcast:

Every cough
Every sneeze
Every throat-clear.
Every demand for chocolate milk
Every ... request ... to a significant other for 'after Halo'
....etc

Sure, prox chat would pick this up too, but that's fine when you're the only one lagging behind in the base because you're doing one of the above... you're not sending it to every teammate on the map. Plus, it's not quite 'in the ear'

Sure, there's the mute switch - but are you telling me it's more convenient (and easier to remember) to hit that switch, which is technically off of the controller, than hitting the D-Pad?

Not to mention, if you're broadcasting every single noise on everyone's side of the world, you'll have a far less opportunity to eavesdrop on prox chat anyway.

This is one of those things that sounds great in theory, but if it were to be implemented, barely anyone would use it anyway. So I vote for the *option*, because options are fun, but definitely not the default.

They should add something that my very first xbox live game UNREAL CHAMPIONSHIP had, voice channels! You had 3 blue team channels, 3 red team channels, and I think 2 nuetral channels (channels anyone could join) You would press a button and the little box would pop up with the button associations such as PRESS A (RED 1) Y ( BLUE 1) LEFT TRIGGER (NUETRAL 1). Each channel could hold 4 people talking it up. Great concept that I don't think got used at all after that.

I'll agree to open chat -- although make it a personal setting so those that want it, can sellect it for their use. Also, for the annoying players, they can be muted.

I'd also like to know how far voice proximity works, because I seem to not know if I'm talking to a fellow trooper or not.

But that annoying, hi-pitched PTT beep sound really needs to go. After playing, my ear rings from it.

I think having to push a button to talk was the worst aspect of the beta. Because of this most matches resulted in NO COMMUNICATION. I mostly play with friends, and find the fact that I have to push a button to talk to my team very cumbersome while trying to focus on playing the game.

Please... Bungie... give us open chat before you launch the game. There is no reason to leave the chat system the way it is/was in the beta. I also don't care for proximity chat which failed badly in Rainbow Six and was then taken out and reverted to open-chat shortly after launch.

I should be able to chat with any and all of my team mates at all times without having to utilize a button on the controller.

Please give us open chat. Pushing the D-pad is so much of hassle. It's impossible to move when you're talking and makes team play unbearable.

and I never even thought about Rumble Pit. Talking to your opponents in Rumble Pit would be awesome.

Open chat would be the worst thing you could ever do to Halo multiplayer. Anyone who has played and heard the jerk who's playing his favorite boy band song in the background would agree. Sure there's supposed to be the a-hole button, but when you mute a guy on your team, you lose his cooperation. If you made it an option, you'd still hear the jerk's music if he had open chat turned on...

Don't get me wrong, if it wasn't for the sexist, racist, annoying, jerks out there it would be just fine. I just don't think that I could put up with all of that just to jump into a game of slayer.
