DO NOT WANT

everyone that says pressing up takes too long must be some kind of noob without über micro- I've never had a situation where I got killed because I was warning my team- Open chat is lame especially with some of the people that play halo2/3.. Screamers, music players, racists, bigots, ignoramuses, shit talkers..

No thanks if they have a problem pushing the d-pad maybe I won't have to hear them insult my religion, country, or sexual orientation (which is straight by the way sorry guys).

I really agree with everything said in this article. Bungie, please open team chat (no button), and consider proximity chat to the other team.

Waaaaaah! Are you guys kidding me? We have a controller with 8 buttons and two control sticks but its too hard to push the D-pad? Get real and suck it up. It isnt hard once you have done it more than once. Use your palm if you need to.

Get rid of push to talk, it stops people talking all together because nobody wants to be pressing extra buttons during a firefight.

I have the solution!

open chat during games with your team only! and if you want to talk a little trash to the other team, press the d-pad to open a channel and yell "teabag!" or whatever. this way, you can talk to your team, without stopping to press a button, and call out important info without the other team hearing. and you still can trash talk all the noobs

Yeah I have to say open chat is the way to go... There were too many times when I was caught in a firefight requesting assistance, or needed some help to capture objectives and nobody but the other team heard me. All b/c I couldn't or would forget to push that #$%# button!

First of all sorry for my English, it’s not my native language.

I would love to have at least the option to arrange games with open chat.

I have a group of close (real life) friends and we are all more or less casual gamers. We used to bring four televisions and Xboxes together to play Halo CE. At times we play seriously and at times we are just fooling around, having a drink and talking about anything but game strategy.

A few years ago one of us has moved from the Netherlands to the United States. We’ve all gotten Xbox Live and Halo 2 to get something of the experience of those evenings back. It’s difficult to find the time to play together because of the different time zones. We used to see each other a lot when we still lived in the same country so when we have time to meet on Xbox Live we usually also have a lot to talk about besides strategy. Having to press the white button the whole time really is a nuisance. Sometimes half of the group prefers to stay in the lobby to talk without the hassle.

Some of the benefits of push to talk over open chat don’t hold up if you’re playing with only real life friends. Coming together and playing on a lan instead is not an option because one of my friends moved to the United States. The Xbox 360’s private chat would have been a solution if it weren’t limited to two persons. Having the option to play with open chat would be great to us. With the option we don’t have to choose between the game and the lobby on those times when half of the group wants to play while the other half mainly just want to do a group chat.

Haven't read all the comments but why not have it like a switch. If you push up, it switches to open chat. If you push down, it does it temporary?

I tought "press a button to team talk" was a SCEI copyrighted thing...

Now seriously, -10,000,000,000 respect for bungie if they keep the old press a button to talk thing on the final version of H3 MP.

Last time I checked it was the 21st century here. And that's Florida here, where everything is slooooww and takes tiiiimeee to haaapeeen...

I have been hoping for open chat since my first game of assault in Halo 2. This is long overdue, despite the obvious advantage of making it harder for that 12 year old who really wants to sing to me. This is one of the only complaints I have in the Halo franchise.

Yes please bungie, this will be a great option since it works well with CTF. That way we'll be able to assists others quickly instead of waiting to see where they died on the mini-map. Plus I like the idea of proximity eavesdropping, I can just imagine being on a ridge looking down into the battlefield to hear the flag holder strategically camping being a rock that I didn't know he was there.......Yes HEADSHOT!!!!

Yes. Too short of a talk time for when you press the d pad, too often, too consciously. Just too much wrong with the dpad method and what it entails.

To pick one over the other, id rather have open chat.

I support open chat. I play Gears of War a lot with open chat and there's no hassle. I know there's a lot more annoying 9 year olds on Halo but still, it's not like you're gonna die anyways. Also, I think that if someone's annoying that you should be able to, aswell as mute; in postgame give a rating of how annoying/harassing/threatening they are, and IF Bungie review like they say they do, then that person gets 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 stars off their rep or some punishment like not being able to send messages or private chat for a few days. I think that'd teach them if it's so bad.

Anyone agree?

I vote for keeping the push-to-talk system as is. It keeps down on the inane chatter. You can still strategize with your team, but you don't have to listen to some 12 year old singing through the whole match. Yeah I know theres a mute button too, but that takes too much time.

Thank you for making this, because it was one of my major problems with the game. The only other problem I had was I thought that if you can stick the warthog twice, it should blow up. I wholeheartedly agree with this!

Please Bungie =)

Games with open chat have always been more fun and social, I find. Games like PGR, or more relatively Return to Castle Wolfenstein which used open chat were always incredibly fun. At least with Halo 2 the chat button was within easy reach.

Fortunately Bungie seems to be getting off their "We'll tell you how to play online" horse and is listening to their users criticisms. They have included a custom game search feature (not including this in Halo 2 killed the experience for me, imo), and have hinted in interviews of removing team chat due to player frustration.
