Gamers will have 350 building types to choose from in SimCity Societies, "each of which allows them to combine, connect and re-arrange structures freely." You'll also be able to change the way your society behaves by creating a 1984 society or one that lives in a Candyland. One of the more interesting facets is that players can combine buildings and consume resources to create "social energies." What you decide to do with the different resources (industry, wealth, obedience, knowledge, devotion, or creativity) determines the "social energy" of your society. It sounds like a very different take on SimCity, from a straight simulation to a more "game" experience. We're sure to get a taste for the game soon and it's expected to release this fall. For better or worse, we'll all get to try the new SimCity soon enough.

Why not just to a fully fledged sequel to Sim City? A lot of the Sim spin offs were complete rubbish. Only the Sims has been a success.

Sim City 4 is a micromanage mess, and this looks worse. Plus when did Sim City 4 come out? Does seem that long ago. Can't they wait a year or so and have some of the Spore people do it? Where's the fire?
I hope they release Sim City 5 in like 2010 made by the people who are doing Spore and forget this mess ever was made.

Completely agree. I have loved Sim City from the beginning, for them to call this messy looking game "Sim City" is only going to alienate hardcore fans of the series.

this is not the first time they have screwed up...
and it does not much suprise me...
but to abandon sim city to an idea that is not in line with
the aura of sim city itself basically reduces the game from its previous glory to nothing more
than a two word title on a two bit game
if spore flops and Will Wright is dropped by EA Games and is doomed to being a hobo forever
that would be the least of what he deserves for letting this wonderful game go...
he should have NEVER EVER have let this from his grasp...
Genius, you are totaly right
I am already alienated...

They've lost a seriously loyal fan. Trying to merge the sims with a watered down simcity SUCKS!!!
Will Wright, you are a sellout. You suck.
Alienated longterm-hardcore simcity fan.
