Nothing new.

They will hold them off for a very long time...but not forever. PSP all over again, at least for piracy. They've held the fort longer than MS, but eventually they will be the same as far as their console...um...hack ability...if that was even a word.

Honestly, i can't really see what the PS3 "hackers" would be after. With the psp, it's sooo much more than just illegal gaming and running snes. you can open it up to stream all sorts of media off of your home pc along with many other truly useful homebrew apps that sony fails to create. PS3 comes with linux on it. Why brick it just for free games? Cmon folks, just learn to program in Unix.

Dave Karakker should watch his mouth. Who wants to take bets on how quickly the lawsuits would put Sony out of business if they started bricking people's hardware?

Cutting them off from the online service? Totally legal. Bricking hardware and destroying their investment? Yeeeaaaahhhh.... unless the laws have changed not so much.

@AoE

I Think he means that you can Brick your system trying to run the hacks, not that Sony would Brick your system.

it's not Sony that bricks the hardware, it's the user. All of this system-hacking requires flashing bios and rom chips with faulty info to be able to run unsigned code. One small mistep and the changes you made to your system make it unable to operate.

I dunno, if they've been getting away with bricking PSPs I dont see how a PS3 is much diffrent. More expensive yes, but at the same time im sure they would have the same protection as however they get away with it with the PSP. Probably some clause about reserving the right to disable hardware running rogue code.

Sony should have marketed the PS3 as a cheap, powerful computer, not an expensive, unappealing game console. The system is great for all of the things Sony doesn't want you doing.

I dunno, I had a HUGE grin on my face the day I managed to boot Sega CD games from my xbox 1's DVD drive.

Geekgasms like that are hard to come by.

LOLZ, even if you did pirate Resistance and Moterstorm(sucks), you still wouldn't get your moneys worth out of that blasphemish console!

I digress.

Wait, no it don't!?!

How do you make a game bootable but not playable? The controller doesn't work?

Looks like the ps3 is turning into the PSP more and more. Can't wait to see them release a homebrew firmware that lets them use backups of bluray discs on the ps3. I'm quite sure that will hinder development on the ps3 as it's done on the psp.

Additional remark... if homebrew on the ps3 enables hackers to crack bd+ that might put a nail in bluray (both HDM formats actually) in terms of replacing DVD.

Hey Murry, are you just making something up, honestly confused like AoE appeared to be, or do you have any sort of source for this idea you seem to be putting forth that Sony has purposely bricked PSP systems and gotten away with it?

"Probably some clause about reserving the right to disable hardware running rogue code."

That may very well be BD+ if I recall correctly. This is why I'm vigorously anti-BD.

I hope they don't mean this hacker. "Hackers have thus far managed to get illegal copies of games to boot on the PS3, but not play." If that is the case wish that it be corrected. That was a legal backup, retrieved on my legal retail PS3 system, burned, and burned.
My intent is homebrew, not a loader of any sort, but this (my exploit) was the first sign of progress, progress Sony has recognized as much as I have.

Oh homi, trolling without knowledge should be a brickable offense.

"Looks like the ps3 is turning into the PSP more and more. Can't wait to see them release a homebrew firmware that lets them use backups of bluray discs on the ps3."
Because... a $4000 burner, and discs that run $30 a pop, plus rental costs, and the high possibility of misburns, is totally worth it in the long run. People are not going to pirate PS3 games because it's not financially viable. Now if they could make an HD boot, people could steal a total of two games without an HD upgrade.

"I'm quite sure that will hinder development on the ps3 as it's done on the psp."
Hinder development on the PSP? Do you even KNOW what you're talking about? The amount of developers on PSP has gone up, not down. Why today even, a PSP game was announced. On any given month, PSP gets between 10-20 games nowadays. So mind telling me where all this developer support is going? Sega would be interested to know as well.

"Additional remark... if homebrew on the ps3 enables hackers to crack bd+ that might put a nail in bluray (both HDM formats actually) in terms of replacing DVD."

So what you're saying is, if Hackers manage to hack BluRay, hackers would be all over limiting their piracy to a select few articles. Basically, what you're saying is that cracking BluRay, which was done a long time ago, incidently, will kill HD formats. Despite everyone who owns an HDTV wanting them. So what you're basically saying is HDTVs are worthless and hackers will kill that market.

You are the weakest link, goodbye

Actually, the burners are $300 currently, discs are $7 and you can download the games for free.
