Soul Calibur 4 unveiled for Xbox 360, PS3 in this debut teaser
Patience may be a virtue, but in this case, it also wasn't entirely necessary as 1UP presents a small taste of Soul Calibur 4 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Initially set to be revealed in next month's issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, this is quite a tiny morsel of what should be an avalanche of next generation Soul Calibur news and video flooding out of the gates of Ziff.
From what we can tell, not only could this be the final installment of this series, but it's also not due until 2008. Until then, let us ponder Ivy's "upgrades" and enjoy the video!

stupid comment, SC hasn't been an exclusive series
Thierry @ Jun 12th 2007 8:21PM
I wonder if there will be anything new to the series or just more of the same.
CJC @ Jun 12th 2007 8:24PM
All I want is the the team battles from SC2 back. Massive 8 vs. 8 fights are my fondest memories of the series.
EihBeir @ Jun 12th 2007 8:24PM
Boobs. I click on the boobs.

Thank you joun! Thank you.
Joshua @ Jun 12th 2007 8:34PM
So 360 and PS3 get 4 while Wii gets Legends. That was obvious.
Anyway, it looks like we have to wait for EGM to get some gameplay shots.
jmcdougall @ Jun 12th 2007 8:41PM
Holy crap, nice tits!
Ninegauger @ Jun 12th 2007 8:42PM
Soul Calibur III was exclusive... so it's nice to see it return to multiplatform release... wasn't the orginal Soul Calibur also exclusive (on the Dreamcast)? So it's been exclusive more often than not from what I can tell (aside from the Arcade versions).
AoE @ Jun 12th 2007 8:42PM
wow, I'm all for boobs in video games, but good lord the designers went of the deep end here...
Either way, it's Soul Calibur, so it'll be great, I can't wait!
AoE @ Jun 12th 2007 8:46PM
@Ninegauger,
You're correct. Actually, the ONLY entry in the series to see multiplatform home console release before was Soul Calibur 2.
Soul Blade was exclusive to Playstation, SC to the Dreamcast, and SC 3 on the PS2.
Ocho @ Jun 12th 2007 8:47PM
I'm sure they'll do alright with the game, but Namco needs to bag that logo if'n I'm to take them seriously.
Also, boobs.
junon @ Jun 12th 2007 8:49PM
old FF ports and pc ports really dont count, everything seems to wind up on the pc eventually- and spin off title are such a different beast from main series
ninegauger- i completely glossed over sc3, ty for correcting me
T-MeK @ Jul 17th 2007 11:25PM
Oh how i miss playing Soul Calibur in an actual arcade against live players! :D Those were the days. *sigh* Opponent after opponent taken down by my dastardly Asteroth.

Please can someone email the development team and ask them to put back in the team battles!?! (ie. 8-on-8)

C'mon Joystiq, lead by example and refuse to run items that don't feature actual gameplay footage and/or images.

I AM VERY EXCITE!
elmer @ Jun 12th 2007 9:33PM
So after Soul Calibur 2 firmly established that Nintendo fans want Soul Calibur fighting games more than Sony or Microsoft fans, Namco have gladly rewarded them by not providing their subsequent two SC fighting games for Nintendo fans. Thankfully we're rewarded with not-a-fighting-game-was-probably-originally-being-worked-on-for-ps2 game.
And what fate for Katamari? the friedly rolling game that miraculously avoids both DS and Wii?
Fox @ Jun 12th 2007 9:44PM
How pathetic... her original costume was incredibly sexy but ultimately practical. This is just ugly and stupid.
Ken @ Jun 12th 2007 9:53PM
@Fox
What're you gay?! I mean... it's absolutely practical! It's hawt!
/sarcasm
SC4 is going to be great. Soul Calibur is one of the last fighting games I can actually stand. Glad to see that this is finally seeing the light of day.
bounchfx @ Jun 12th 2007 9:59PM
"So after Soul Calibur 2 firmly established that Nintendo fans want Soul Calibur fighting games more than Sony or Microsoft fans"
wrong, it established that people wanted to play as Link.
zwarrior @ Jun 12th 2007 10:01PM
See I f'kn knew why they announced SC Legends for the Wii, because they wouldn't make SCIV for it, plus where the heck is III anyway? Didn't namco say they'd port it to next gen systems? Im thinking about starting a I HATE NAMCO group
zwarrior @ Jun 12th 2007 10:06PM
31, only newbs honestly played with Link, to me he was the weakest of the bunch
Air Guitar @ Jun 12th 2007 10:49PM
i'm going to have to wait until SC: Legends is better detailed to give a complete opinion on this latest revelation, but if initial impressions and implications persist, i'm going to have to say wow. by the time this game comes out, the Wii will be the WW market leader. there is no bubble bursting in the future, there is only market domination. if devs want to pay lip service to that, then fine. more money for nintendo before they all truely come groveling back.
sheppy @ Jun 12th 2007 10:40PM
Am I really the only person salivating at the prospect that each system would have an exclusive character again? I say SCIV needs, nay... DEMANDS Kratos. I'd say throw Master Chief into the 360 version but that shit was retarded when Team Ninja did it. Kameo perhaps?
Shockgamer M2B @ Jun 12th 2007 10:53PM
24,
Not too long ago, asking for Katamari and Ace Combat on the 360 would've been a dream too.
Cr33pingParanoia @ Jun 13th 2007 3:25AM
Is there a game behind those boobs?
synce @ Jun 12th 2007 11:02PM
I was telling everyone that this would happen. Tekken 6 and MGS4 are next. I can bet my life on it.
Allen @ Jun 13th 2007 12:28AM
Why hello, Ivy!
ferrarimanf355 @ Jun 12th 2007 11:41PM
Dan, it's going to happen. And don't spout any Cell propaganda. It never stopped other multiplats.
Brandon @ Jun 13th 2007 12:09AM
There isnt anything really surprising about SC4 being multiplatform. The only reason that SC3 was PS2 exclusive was because support for the xbox and gamecube had already dried up while the ps2 was still going strong.
I doubt tekken goes anywhere though. It has never been on any other company's console (other than a retard gba port many years ago). Especially since the arcade game is being designed on Cell arcade chipset, similar to how all past tekken arcade games used playstation architecture. Since that makes it an easy port to PS consoles, why pour the extra money into making things work for the 360, when the game from the ground up is designed to take advantage of PS architecture.
Arturo @ Jun 13th 2007 12:29AM
"13. She needs to get some more sun... and maybe a breast reduction; its a tad ridiculous."
I completely disagree. That's crazy talk!
Jonah Falcon @ Jun 13th 2007 12:47AM
Is that Soul Calibur 4? Judging from the screenshot, I thought it was Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball 3.
ferrarimanf355 @ Jun 13th 2007 1:03AM
Brandon, I'm assuming you thought that the Cell was going to ensure exclusivity for DMC4, GTA4, Assassin's Creed... tell me when to stop...
ALH @ Jun 13th 2007 3:51AM
oh, great. Ivy was my fave character to play as and now theyve made her into some big titted monstrosity. Bleh. Soul calibur is fun, but i think thats enough to put me off buying this new version. PLEASE say she has a different costume set =\

BiggerBoat @ Jun 13th 2007 8:10AM
@ bounchfx
I don't really see your logic here, sure there will have been some GC owners persuaded to purchase because of Link's inclusion but there's no way to tell how many. Anyway who's to say that they couldn't do the same with SCIV or change it up a little and use Ganondorf or someone else.
Fact is, for whatever reason SCII sold damn well on GC so I think it's a bizzare decision on Namco's part to not release the current iteration on Wii. I'd honestly like to hear their thinking behind this decision as it's akin to flushing wads of money down the toilet.
It would have easily outsold PS3's version and I see no reason why it couldn't have exceeded 360's but oh well, life goes on.
Brandon @ Jun 13th 2007 8:29AM
ferrarimanf35, none of those are arcade games ported to a console. The core of an arcade game is done when the systems go out to arcades, and its a matter of porting that core game to the consoles and building extra modes around it. But since they are using arcade boxes based on a Cell chipset, it makes it a pretty simple task to just port to the PS3 with little changes needed. But to make it work for the 360, it would take a costly reworking of how the game runs in order to work on a 360.
It just because a cheaper option when one port is so much cheaper to do than the other. And besides Sony probably wants too keep it that way anyway, perhaps being the reason the tekken team used cell based arcade boxes in the first place.
Brandon @ Jun 13th 2007 8:35AM
At people surprised its not on a Wii.
IT. WOULDNT. WORK. The controls,(unless using a classic controller) would have to be mapped to so many various gestures that it would be difficult to remember them all. Not to mention that the Wiimote is no where near as split-second precise as would be needed in most of the major 3d fighters (VF SC, TEKKEN).
In short, be happy with Super smash brothers, because it doesn't seem likely that you will get anything else. Unless classic and gamecube controller adoption goes through the roof. Not to mention making a game for all three means making some definite graphical sacrifices in the Wii version, in some cases companies simply added waggle to a ps2 version of a game and ported it over. Sad.
BiggerBoat @ Jun 13th 2007 9:30AM
@ Brandon
I think it could easily work on Wii. The recently and soon to be released Mortal Kombat & SSBB both give the player options to use motion or traditional controls, why would SCIV be any different?
Fact is lots of people already have either a classic or GC controller and that number is only going to grow with the continued success of the VC and releases like the previously mentioned SSBB & the ones who don't can play using motion controls which from looking at reviews were reasonably well implemented in MK.
Putting it onto Wii would be some extra work in terms of both visuals and controls, no doubt, but if it sold even half as well as SCII on GC it would be more than worth the effort!
