Joystiq first look: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Joystiq attended an Activision event at Infinity Ward in Los Angeles two weeks ago, and got some inside information on all things Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We didn't get to play it (curse you!), although we did watch the developers play a multiplayer match. It's becoming more and more tempting just bring our own Xbox 360 controller to one of these events (that's what they showed it off on) and try to sneak our way onto their consoles.
First of all, the good news that almost everyone knows already -- Modern Warfare means modern combat. No more WWII setting at all for this CoD title, and that makes everyone breathe a sigh of relief. There's undoubtedly been more man-hours fought in WWII video games than during the actual war.
Check out the screenshots from the Xbox 360 and PC versions in the gallery below, and then read the rest of the story after the break.
Infinity Ward calls this "the best thing we've ever done" (has a developer ever said, "This is the crappiest thing we've ever done") and they've been working on it since before CoD2 was completed, which is why Treyarch did all the work on CoD3. They've been busy doing research on modern weapons (they have a military advisor on staff), uniforms, settings, vehicles, and put everything together in a storyline they've developed.
They also made a conscious decision to avoid the war in Iraq and work on a unique story of their own. In the game, a Russian ultra-nationalist named Zakiev is trying to bring Russia back to its former glory days, but he's using a poor set of social skills in doing so by using massacre, assassination, and so on to secure his position. He's also working with some other nasty baddies to get things done, including Al Asad, a bad guy from ... the Middle East, surprise!
You'll confront this threat throughout the game as you play either a Force Recon or British S.A.S. soldier, although they promise "cameo" roles that will let you play different types of soldiers for a single level. We saw this demonstrated in a fairly creepy (yet amazing) level where you played the gunner in an AC-130 gunship. If you've seen the videos on YouTube showing thermal images of enemy combatants on the ground as they get taken out, this level is built to look just like one of those videos. It's incredibly well-done, but it's also somewhat disturbing.
The game also features no campaign system like the past CoD titles. Instead the game "unfolds like an action novel of a television series." To that end, they've developed the look and feel of the game to be hyper-realistic, and spent a lot of time on things like particle effects, clouds, changing depth of field, water, real-time lighting, and very detailed matte painting backgrounds. They promise that the "greasy and plastic looking" characters are gone, replaced by models that look more human. The soldiers will even sweat in the desert levels. The four soldier models they showed us were extremely detailed, down to the stitching on their clothing, and you could even read the time on their watches. Pretty cool stuff.
The multiplayer also got a complete overhaul, and they mentioned that the reason why the CoD2 multiplayer was so rough initially was because Microsoft changed the firmware at launch, which ended up breaking their multiplayer code. Oops. The new multiplayer is entirely class-based, and you outfit your soldier not only with primary and secondary weapons, but also up to three "Perks" and special abilities. These are things like extra gear, a GPS jammer, more damage, dead silence (stealth), and a really cool one called "last stand." Last stand lets you push a button when mortally wounded, which pulls out your pistol as you lay bleeding out on the ground. You can then fire wildly at your attacker(s) until your finally drop dead. Good for revenge killing or telling your teammates where the bad dudes are.
There's also a experience bar in the multiplayer, and as you get better you can level up your character, get promotions, and so on. There are no vehicles in the multiplayer, it's all infantry based, and will include Deathmatch, Free For All, Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy, and other gametypes. They also incorporated some of the more popular mods for multiplayer, so there's no crosshair mode, no HUD, and no regenerating health, so basically "be careful out there." During the match we watched you could see leveling up actively happening during a match, witness players (with powerful enough weapons) shooting through walls, and in some cases ceilings to take out an enemy above them. You can also call in things like airstrikes or satellite recon from time to time, depending on your outfit. It's also party-based, meaning your friends can jump into a match at any time.
The game was shown to us (in an extremely nice theater room at Infinity Ward) on a big screen, and on an Xbox 360, which they also ran the trailers and demo videos on. Some of the developers we spoke with said the PS3 version will look basically the same as the 360, and that there is no Wii version being planned (saw-Wii!). They're also planning on issuing a press release soon for the "special voice talent" and "well-known television writers" they were able to get for the game. Well, David Chase isn't working on The Sopranos anymore, so here's hoping.

This may be the thing that will make me buy an Xbox 360.

A lot of the game sounds like Rainbow Six. Hopefully it won't be so similar that it loses it's feel.

Perhaps because a fair amount of modern warfare has taken place there? I mean, it would be pretty lame to create a modern installment only to have the US fighting the Germans again. Who else do you want them to put into it?

That being said: I'm positive that the company can make a good story line and interesting environments usine any part of the world, and not just using the Middle East (or a desert, etc.) Other current gen games have done this successfully.

Glad to see that 200 dollar Sony tax is paying off.

How, exactly, do you make a military game without being "pro-army"? Do you want to play as insurgents and blow up unarmed jews in a pizza parlor as they celebrate their sons 15th birthday?
You pretty much will be the "good guys" killing "the bad guys". Please tell me what nationality would be acceptable to kill in a war game for you? Jews? Russians? Wait I know, Americans, that would make your yellow blood speed up wouldn't it?
It amazes me, you probably discuss people coming down on games like GTA and what not as censorship nazi's that don't realize it's "just a game" and then whine that developer's pick on the poor little middle east.
It's a game.

Well, at least you can actually *play* the game on PS3 instead of waiting for the Fedex guy to bring back your 360 from repair.

Why hasn't there been a game that has you bumping off politicians and such in famous places? That Assassin's Creed thing got me to wondering why we don't get interesting games where you get to do stuff on US soil.

But besides the over stating for dramatic affect, seriously who would you (you meaning the people that dont like having it in the middle east or with terrorist) like to fight and/or kill? Who, in a real world non alien scenario is acceptable to you?

That would actually make for a pretty cool game. Why it hasn't happened yet probably has to do with fear of backlash from political idiots.
Or maybe just because no ones really thought of one. I mean, who would we fight? Chinese? The Russians? Iranians?
Just about any realistically styled game with combat taking place in the US would, well, seem unrealistic because there is practically no one in the world with the balls to invade the US in a traditional military campaign.
Plus, it would be dubbed "racially charged" if it were the chinese (the only likely candidate.)
I'd like to see this game, but it would be seriously hard to make it seem realistic. It would have to occur in some crazy alternate reality universe. And that in itself makes it unrealistic.

To be honest, I don't know why they bother with stories in most of the shooter games. I read books and watch films for stories - video games (especially online ones) work best when it's focused on delivering a great user experience. Story is irrelevant to enjoying a game. I had Socom 3 and loved playing with friends online as we could dominate in games because we worked well together. Was there a story or single player option on socom? No idea, I bought it to outwit/gun down people online.

BTW, considering Resistance was about an invasion by aliens, these stories could take place in the USA. Someone will eventually do it. GTA proves that people haven't got problems wandering around real US cities causing mayhem.

Personally I like WWII shooters...well, as long as they don't end in "honor" that is.
Why go away from your bread and butter? Because the WWII era is overflooded? Looking at my first statement I would say that the modern warfare era is pretty well represented and doesn't need another player in the game. CoD4 will only draw comparisons and will not be the defacto franchise like it was with WWII games.
Nobody's ever made a game about the Korean war era...Does anyone remember we went to war with North Korea in the 50's? Nobody's ever done a Vietnam game......that was good.

By "Nobody's ever made" do you actually mean "I've never heard of"? You might want to check your facts there, especially about the Vietnam games.

Ridiculous? Maybe, but people have been offended by way less. I'm not easily offended and yet when I saw this image, it made me feel very uncomfortable.

I'm glad there's going to be a modern combat game that puts entertainment first. I've killed more Nazis than an entire platoon, I'm ready to move on.

The current wars remain a highly divisive issue in the USA and around the world and hence are not suitable at this time for entertainment. The company should either focus on other historical conflicts (Korea, Vietnam, Falkland Islands, whatever) or should make a different realistic but fictional scenario for a modern warfare game.

That is how you make a dumbass argument. I say nobody has ever made a Korean War game because no one ever has. You claim ignorance on my part yet don't provide evidence or examples to the contrary. Don't argue against me on the outside chance that I am wrong. You obviously have no idea, given the fact you provide no proof.
2. No one has ever come close to making a good Vietnam game---You argue this with examples? None? Good job honey.
Hell, I'll give YOU an example of why you're wrong. The highest reviewed Vietnam game I've ever seen was Battlefield Vietnam in 2004, 3 years ago!! Highest score I've seen for this is by any respectable reviewer is an 8.5/10.(now go look up some tool website that rated it 100% just to prove me wrong). While 8.5 is "respectable" do you think it comes anywhere NEAR the reviews and success of the major WWII shooter franchises? Modern warfare franchises? FUTURE warfare franchises? NO!! You DUMBASS! Next time you try to think just do the world a favor and swallow a bullet.

Regardless of anyones political stance, I think we all play games for the same reason. ENTERTAINMENT. I don't care if I played a game as George Bush going out to hunt Osama Bum Laden if the game is FUN and I ENJOY it, that is all that matters. People these days are TOO sensitive about EVERYTHING which is ruining this country from the inside out.
