This has less to do with banning games and EVERYTHING to do about making yourself look good when election time comes around.

They know the bill is unconstitutional is going to fail. They know they're going to waste millions of tax payer dollars.

But they also know everyone who votes for the bill gets to make a nice little campaign ad talking about how "Jim Johnson voted to keep violent and sexually explicit video games out of your children's hands. That's values you can trust!" around election time.

And God forbid if you vote this down because you know it's unconstitutional: "Jim Johnson's opponent, Steve Stevenson, voted AGAINST a low to keep violent and explicit video games out of your kids hands. Vote for Jim Johnson, and tell Steve Stevenson you want a candidate who cares about our children"

Is it necessarily good election politics to put a ton of support behind a law that's eventually going to be deemed unconstitutional and costly?

It's true, this man has no dick.

The most we can hope for in those elections is that, to use as a basis, knulpm's guys, that Steve Stevenson will say that Jim Johnson wasted taxpayer dollars.

Damned mudslinging politicians. You may ask what they have done for us in office...but what in the fuck did YOU do?

Spitzer is good fiscally, but as a social guy... I think he should be concerned with spending tax money on more worthwhile issues.

When Spitzer ran for governor, he created this image of himself as a "never-say-die" kind of guy; he made some very firm campaign promises about how certain things about the way they do business in Albany were going to change. Right after he took office, though, he was forced to make some compromises (that's the way it is in state government in a state that contains a city like New York). He took some knocks for those compromises, and for some small but rather unpopular health care reforms that resulted in nursing homes closing.

Now, with this stupid video game bill, Spitzer has a chance to stand behind something 100% and never have to back down-- because he knows it won't pass. Politically, he can't afford to yield on something like this, because he's had to yield so much already. But it has to do with how it makes him look-- not whether or not he thinks it'll actually work.

Wow. This is shoddy journalism at its finest, and both the New York Times and Joystiq are to blame. The bill wouldn't ban violent videogames altoghether, but would prohibit the sale of violent videogames to minors. The distinction is ENORMOUSLY important. Confusing the group for the whole--welcome to Logical Fallacies 101.

The editors at Joystiq need to be proactive about fact checking before they just copy and paste stories.

I'm not saying I agree with the bill either (I don't), but you guys are usually good about this sort of thing. Wake up.

Did Spitzer make campaign promises? The only thing that I remember about his campaign, is that he refused to have any sort of debates with his opponents. His attitude was that he was 'pre-ordained' to be the gov, so why bother? I just want to know who the idiots who voted for him were? He ALWAYS spent time wasting time and money. One of the 'big' things that he did when he was the attn. general was investigate radio payola. That's a waste of time. Now he wants gay marrige, and 'medical' marajuana. I wonder what else he wants that the state does not support that we might get stuck with.
