Tell you one thing; though, that soccerball looks pretty damn good

But please remember: The Wii's Power PC architecture, clocked at the same speed as the XCPU's off-the-shelf PC chip, will run rings around it in terms of yield rate, and the extra CPU effeciency COULD be used to compensate for the fact that the Shaders are non-programmable, and thus require more CPU power to achieve greater effect

The possibilities are definitely there, you can't say you hit any limitations if your game looks worse than Metroid Prime, Rogue Leader, or RE4

@7: Best comment on Joystiq I've seen in weeks.

@10: No, the Wii development community knows they don't have to try. Anyone for a game of Airplane Island, or perhaps one of the many Gamecube re-releases?

*Adv2k1: "Look at 360 many first gen games on 360 didn't look that much better than xbox games, now you look at Gears of War...By the end of the year we should see some very nice looking wii games."

Haha... no. Consumer standards dictate quality levels.

*cc123: "You Wii fans should start looking in Nintendo's direction to place the blame."

No, the fans themselves are to blame. Nintendo told them the Wii's graphics would suck, and they applauded. Nintendo has now officially adopted Apple's marketing strategy, it works damn well, and that's the way things will be working from now on.

Now, don't forget to get an extra controller for a totally reasonable $60, buy the rubber grips separately for $20, and get a VC controller for $20, so you can actually play 10-year-old games! Hey, who needs to gouge on accessories when Nintendo is making money on the main hardware?

*vidGuy: "I own almost a dozen games for it already. But if I am disappointed in the visuals we've seen so far, simply because it some cases they don't match up to even the GC's output."

No, you are not disappointed -- because you bought almost a dozen games. You are sending a very clear message to developers (and Nintendo) that their crap efforts pay big.

Like it or not, deny it all you want, but you are part of the problem, dude. If you're disappointed, then keep your wallet closed.

*JodyAnthony: "I had to send my wii in to nintendo because the graphics card overheated :( it sucks"

This happens *A LOT*, and nobody ever talks about it. Apparently, it's perfectly acceptable for conservative, underpowered hardware to overheat, because Nintendo will just fix it under warranty. How sweet of them! No need to raise the issue so people actually know it exists.

*Mr. Khan: "But please remember: The Wii's Power PC architecture, clocked at the same speed as the XCPU's off-the-shelf PC chip, will run rings around it in terms of yield rate, and the extra CPU effeciency COULD be used to compensate for the fact that the Shaders are non-programmable, and thus require more CPU power to achieve greater effect"

The enhanced G3 used for the Gamecube CPU is an off-the-shelf design just like the Celeron used in the X-Box, and is actually quite inefficient for consoles. The specialized, embeddable PowerPC cores now available by IBM are far, far better suited to game consoles.

For the Wii, Nintendo just didn't want to pay for a brand new CPU design or require a separate core working in parallel with the main CPU to maintain Gamecube compatibility. CPU ISAs and CPU cores are very different beasts, and are not always interchangable.

"Whatever. Nostalgia is clouding your judgement badly. Asteroids was fun back in the day, but today it's only good to play once in a while to satisfy that nostalgic itch to play an old game. Games like Geometry Wars are the modern day Asteroids and they ARE better."

Actually, no. Geometry Wars' gameplay gets too complex too soon. Asteroids (the arcade version), for me, is better. It's simple, addictive, and has no bullshit in it like Geometry Wars does.

There's no nostalgy here. There're plenty of games that have not aged well (Missile Command, Pole Position for example), but Asteroids I keep getting back to any time I can.

I thought the gamecube had shaders about as good as the xbox? Its just that they work in a different way.. using progammanble shaders, rather than the kind that devs on other systems are used to.

I'm pretty sure that the GCN could run pretty much any shader effect that the xbox could..

..however feel free to contradict..

I bought the games because they are fun, not for shiny visuals or the lack thereof. I am pissed at the lack of effort in visuals but it doesn't deter me from buying and playing great games.
