Using a combination of GIMP and more time than we care to imagine, N+ member Lutherjw has created a smart-looking mock-up of what the Super Mario Galaxy box could look like. Of course the real thing will probably be half as interesting, but what's a gamer to do when he needs a new 3D Mario fix?
Nintendo of America's resident name taker Reggie Fils-Aime promised we would see Galaxy by year's-end, and speculation insists Nintendo will produce a solid release date at Min-E3. Until then, all we can do is sit back and critique Lutherjw's GIMP creation. Needs more Shaq, if you ask us.

Heh, I bet if you scan that UPC code, it rings you up for Happy Feet.
Seriously, though... That's some pretty good 'shopping. Very convincing.

It's alright. The back is fine but as for the front, while the background is nice, there's no focus. The spine logo will likely be a plain lettering.
I call that the real version will use some kind of shiny foil art.
Eitherway, it's a decent job and I'm waiting silently for the game.

Very nice work! I wish I was that good with GIMP.

The back is incredibly convincing, but the front just seems like a bunch of images thrown together in no particular order
I also love how they added a WiFi Connection logo on there

I have to say, the cover looks wonderful, but the back art could use a little work. Half of it has to be eaten up by the specs and warnings, but perhaps with some more screenshots and videos from Nintendo it could be upgraded.

Soo, what makes this a story? The fact that someone designed a boxart or the fact that someone actually used GIMP?

I hate how almost 50% of the back is covered in dense legal text. Why does Nintendo do this? I want more screen caps and artwork!

360 does the same thing, though
I looked at the back of MLB 2k7 360, and most of the back was consumed by various logos associated with Major League Baseball, and even on other boxes, space to show off the actual title was at a premium
Also, on Nintendo's boxes, they have all 3 North American languages printed for the Wii games, something they never did before
Oh, and PacMan Championship Edition rules, as i learned yesterday, the only flaw is the 360's sucky d-pad

Who cares about the back? I'm sure when 5 year olds see the picture of Mario they will whine until mommy buys the game.

Just...sad.
To me, this would be like trying to imagine the box art for the new PS2 Barbie game. I guess some people just don't have much of a life...and the fact that this is news?
I'd rather see mock ups of the next eight million minigame compilations that're releasing in the next two months. Now that'll be awesome!
Wake up me when Killer Instinct 360 or Starfox Wii = announced.

You just compared Mario, not a side-game (kart, sports, RPG, whatever) but a MAIN Mario game... to a Barbie game.
GTFO now.

I have to disagree about the lack of focus on the front. If you used golden line rules, you can see that the focus is obviously on the star.

Doesn't even look half-professional. Well, can't fault the "designers" too much for using a cheapass program with the WORST interface ever.
If this/the rumoured Halo 3 cover on Amazon are true I'm getting limited editions.

Looks professional to me... and I've been doing graphic design commercially for more than a decade. I'd probably say it's more than professional, since I've seen some really bad designs over the years, so yeah, "half-professional" could be a compliment.

This is off topic, but comment #14 by BPM made me think of something... We need another Mario RPG! Nintendo should really get on that. Maybe it would convince Square-Enix to pay more attention to the Wii and put out more RPGs for it...
