The Guile to show SSFIITHDROMG
Capcom continues its morphine drip of showing off a character per week from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for XBLA and PSN. This weeks character is Guile, the master of the flat-top. This follows the releases of both Akuma and Ken over the last couple weeks. Capcom swears the images are what the characters will look like in the game and says we'll all be impressed when we see them in motion. Hopefully that'll happen as soon as Min-E3.

This graphic sucks they look too cartonish please bring something like Gear of War or at least Virtua Fighter 5 graphics......
DarkTetsuya @ Jun 16th 2007 3:48PM
@1:
Gears of War = 3D.
Virtua Fighter 5 = 3D.
SSF2T = 2D.
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 16th 2007 3:49PM
@Trio
This are HD Sprites, ala old school... they are not polygons like Virtua Fighter or Gears of War.
Norm @ Jun 16th 2007 3:51PM
Rad, looks great. Kudos to Udon and Capcom USA.
lol @ #1
LTNK @ Jun 16th 2007 3:52PM
What I'd like to know is of there will be more frames for each move. Otherwise, those HD sprites will look off.

Street fighter with the Unreal 3 engine? That would be an entirely different game than what Street Fighter IS!
Canebi @ Jun 16th 2007 3:52PM
Trio, your mom is calling she just poured you a big glass of Sunny D before you go outside and play with your preschool buddies and then come in for a story and nap.
I think you should go.
Patrick @ Jun 16th 2007 3:56PM
Does anyone know when in the fall this game is coming out?
Also, does anyone currently experience button lag during the current XBLA SF game, when playing online?
max @ Jun 16th 2007 4:02PM
can't wait to see this game in action
rockintom @ Jun 16th 2007 4:03PM
Bah. Why are they releasing another Street Fighter 2? Some Alpha 3 would be a thousand times more awesome.
Tron Knotts @ Jun 16th 2007 4:07PM
I studied animation in college, and one of the first things we learned is that the more detailed a drawing is, the more frames of animation nessisary to trick the viewers brain into thinking your drawing is moving.
I fear for how these drawings will look animated.
Plus, that "anatomy" on Guile's asemetrical, seemingly tumor infested arms is a little scary.
His face is well drawn though.
Hart704 @ Jun 16th 2007 4:10PM
I love the HD sprites! So cool.
Otis Whitaker @ Jun 16th 2007 4:10PM

Dumb ass why would it be different game, because of the graphics...?
it seems that you never played Street figther 1 and 2
and what about Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 the were 2D games but with difference graphic engines...
Duhhh...
synce @ Jun 16th 2007 4:18PM
Looks good for a 2D game, but if you really want to be impressed just wait for Sakaguchi's third Xbox 360 RPG (Cry On). It uses a never before seen cel shading technique that makes it look like an actual anime. There are a few scans on Xboxyde.
Ian Von Porter @ Jun 16th 2007 4:18PM
Im glad they limited the colour pallete for the sprites.. makes them really HD sprites; very stylistic.
Too bad Wii cant handle HD graphics... you guys are stuck with the snes version of sst2.
LTNK @ Jun 16th 2007 4:18PM
Trio, have you ever heard of Street Fighter EX and Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game? Well look them up and see why Capcom is sticking with a look not involved with bad games.
LTNK @ Jun 16th 2007 4:21PM
Porter, the SNES was 224i. The Wii is 480p. That does allow better 2D sprites than on the SNES. So it would be Capcom's choice if the Wii is stuck with the SNES games, not the Wii's limitations.
Trio @ Jun 16th 2007 4:25PM
Canebi your mom and your dad is calling they just poured you a big glass of Sunny D before you go outside and play with your preschool buddies and then come in for a story and nap.
I think you should go Canebi....
Seroth @ Jun 16th 2007 4:26PM
Why the hell was Street Fighter EX a bad series? I loved those games. Granted, I never played the original, but I did play Street Fighter EX2 Plus and Street Fighter EX3, and I thought they were both awesome.
As for the Guile sprite...doesn't look as good as the previous HD sprites I've seen, but I have high hopes that it'll look better in motion..it better, 'cause Guile is my favorite character. >=[

and you people like Trio wouldnt even understand that.
John @ Jun 16th 2007 5:23PM
I love what these guys are doing, it's a perfect homage to the games we loved, and we can experience them again, in a new way, via hi-def.
I am curious if the developers will use smoother moves than the original games' jerky few animations.
If they do, they are going to have a load on their hands making gameplay familiar and similar.
If they don't, we can still play the old games, just prettier.
I hope they do both!
Play it in hi-def as the original game, with all the limited animations, or play the new version, with 'smooth moves' (no ex-lax jokes!) for every character, but altered gameplay.
Hmmm... we shall see...
Ratboy @ Jun 16th 2007 5:24PM
Ahhh, Trio's response and the subsequent replies are simply more proof that sarcasm will never translate well on the interweb.
Norm @ Jun 16th 2007 5:41PM
They are not adding frames of animation. Stipulations in place mean no new frames, same exact gameplay.

This sprite looks more like a digital painting than pixel art. It seems to be done in a slightly different style than the previous two that you guys shared here. Is it slightly enlarged, which would explain the slight blurriness?

I like how Trio completely avoids using punctuation during his sentences, but puts 9 of them at the very end of his comment. It's like a punctuation assault! 9-HIT COMBO!!
Thank you, Trio. You have made my day, along with the comments here.
Oh, and like all the other HD sprites that they've released, Guile looks fantastic. Keep 'em coming.

#30: I think that's more a technical issue than anything else... these are based on actual in-game sprites remember, so I don't think they 'fixed' the flag.
This phenomenon reminds me of something else I read about SSF2/T's sprites, When DeeJay was originally drawn, apparently his long pants had 'MANTIS' down the side, but since the N and S were reversed when he faced the other direction, they went with 'MAXIMUM' so it'd be less evident when the sprite was flipped.
(Also I think the same phenomenon happens with Sagat's eyepatch.)
Emceay @ Jun 16th 2007 8:03PM
People that rip on 2d artwork make me cry, they need to lighten up.
These drawings will look great in motion, and if you had a shred of nostalgia in your body, you'd either by moved by the artwork - or you'd be demanding better drawn 2d sprites. But, I suppose that's pointless in your eyes, since you're comparing a 2d fighter with a 3d one - what you really want.
If you're clamoring for another 3d street fighter, you are definitely voicing your opinion to the wrong crowd.
And if you think this looks too cartoony, then I'd have to wonder where your head was at when you were playing the original.
I have to wonder where people like you find any space for light-hearted, happy gaming. Not everything has to be epic, realistic and gritty to be appealing.
No wonder everyone playing Counter-strike is miserable. It's nothing but grit and players shouting noob as a blanket word to cover up their community's lack of openess.
If that's what makes you happy, stay there. Don't shit on my bright and colorful diamond in the rough.

Yes, FUCKTARD it WOULD be a different game! And the Mortal Kombat games ARE different than they used to be. ANY game that switches from 2D to 3D inherently changes! Some do it well (Mario, Mortal Kombat, etc.) and some do it horribly (Sonic).
You aren't too bright are you kid. You are also way to young to remember how Street Fighter is suppose to play to call me a dumbass. Read everyone's posts, your self esteem should go down enough to make you want to end your own life. Loser.
Thierry @ Jun 16th 2007 8:08PM
Capcom is a few years old, they should have come out with HD Street Fighter when Guilty Gears came out.
ill trooper @ Jun 16th 2007 8:19PM
Trio, if you want to see a "more realistic" Guile, you might consider renting Street Fighter: The Movie.
Seriously, though, not everyone is in to this 'sprite' look, while others LOVE it - but that sums up the years that have passed since Street Fighter II was state of the art - despite the technology evolving towards easily handling 3D characters, and then cel-shading of 3D characters, Finding Nemo, etc, a core group of people has continued to support a highly successful series of 2D arcade fighters like SNK vs. Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Street Fighter Alpha, etc.
This update is for that group of people who love the hand-crafted 2D art.
Personally, I want to see BLANKA... Any one else hope they add a Maori face tattoo to Balrog?
Emceay @ Jun 16th 2007 8:20PM
@Thierry
Someone's on point.
Red Leader @ Jun 16th 2007 8:25PM
My commendations to Capcom: I love the art they've been showing us for this verions of SFIIT. I do hope it looks just as good animated, though, but I have little doubt it will. These images are also being viewed at many times their in-game size, so I imagine they'll look much sharper during gameplay.
It is a shame, however, that such a fine piece of in-game artwork should be so quickly blasted by the first near-anonymous poster.
Although it MIGHT be interesting to see Street Fighter run on the Unreal 3 engine, I can't see how that makes these graphics unfavourable. Sure, it may be cartoonish and unrealistic . . . but that just makes it DIFFERENT, not better or worse. It's like saying apple juice is better than bread. Both are suitable for consumption, but entirely different types of food (and drink).
Now I'd just like to see what the rest of the characters will look like . . .
Trio @ Jun 16th 2007 8:35PM
Yeah this crazy Guile has no eyes how he will be able to fight, what the heck its going now with capcom, i prefer street figther 2 graphics at least you can see his eyes, shame on you capcom shame on you.....

Part of poorly received sarcasm is not running with it and regarding the people that couldn't read into the imaginary inflections in your voice as stupid. Subsequent replies are just assuming what someone would spend their time posting on the forum is to be taken at face value. And the source.. doesn't do much to change that, but fan the flames higher.

"They are not adding frames of animation. Stipulations in place mean no new frames, same exact gameplay."
Actually, I'm about 95% sure that they ARE adding new frames of animation. I seem to recall them even saying that people that are very used to the game will have to relearn it a bit because the timing will be slightly different due to having more frames.
I can't give you a quote, but I seem to recall reading it on Joystiq.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jun 16th 2007 11:54PM
@11 (Tron Knotts): So true. What makes it worse is that the poses are so radical. That first image looks positively gut-wrenching... literally.
KiwiLord @ Jun 16th 2007 11:58PM
Trio, we get it, now shut up. We don't need a new KingofWales. Everything you say will be counter-acted, if by nothing else than your own ineptitude.
As much as I like the art, it makes me instantly think of the mid-late episodes of DragonBall Z, where muscles seemed to protrude from the most inexplicable places...kinda has me worried about Cammy. Still I was, and still am, a big fan of Street Fighter, and the fanboy in me really wants this...even though I have no PS3..or 360...
FermitTheKrog @ Jun 17th 2007 12:13AM

MartinG. @ Jun 17th 2007 3:26AM
"Actually, I'm about 95% sure that they ARE adding new frames of animation."
%100 wrong. It's been said over and over by David Sirlin himself that adding new frames or changing the engine is beyond the scope of the project. It's just a visual update.
Jezreel @ Jun 17th 2007 3:39AM
The other character sprites previously shown have looked nice, but this one looks pretty bad. The body looks totally stiff and disproportionate, especially in the standing pose. And where are his eyes? I know Guile has a thick, shadowy brow but this just looks like his eyes were plucked out. I'm hoping there'll be some further changes...
