While we fear the series has run its course -- and rolled up the shark -- seemingly Xbox 360 exclusive and XBLA downloadable title Beautiful Katamari wins us over for today's video pick. The extended gameplay clip looks nearly the same as what we remember from the PS2 until the camera keeps pulling back and the Prince rolls up countries and continents. That's a big katamari, full of so many dreams and so much stuff.
I hate games that pop tooltips up right in the middle of the screen so you can't see fuck all. Especially a stupid looking face with a huge text bubble.
and this is the reason why people have been arguing the last couple of days??? wow!!! i'm sure it might be some fun.. but going as far as newsweek went to say that this will weaking the ps3 it's a bit too much aint't it??
i'm not dissing this game or anything but come on.. i really don't care if it came to ps3.. i still wouldn't have bought it..
i don't understand this whole argument.. it's getting out of hand.. they pick any news to say that the ps3 will fail... it doesn't even make sense
The Katamari series are games that have to be played to be fully understood. If you never have, don't judge the Katamari mechanic before you've experienced it, and I highly recommend that you do! I loved Katamari Damacy much more than this, the second title, because it retained more of the distinctly Japanese feel - particularly in the music, which I still listen to on my iPod many months later (though not recommended while driving - can cause accidents - see http://photo.ajaxweb.co.uk/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=384&g2_serialNumber=1)
As for the tooltips - you can skip them with the Start button, but this player obviously didn't know, and is also *really bad* at this game.
I'm with ridestowe-- this looks fine for a XBLA game. I would expect a few enhancements, even something as simple as better shading/shadows would've been cool, but it doesn't matter. Looks like a great downloadable, and it'll probably look pretty sharp in HD on a nice big screen, too.
hmmm well i guess it's more than meets the eye.. like i said, i'm not trying to diss the game.. but it is kinda bad for people to say that the ps3 is doing so bad cause we're not getting it..
it would be like saying.. since 360 is not getting katamari means that 360 is going down the hill..
i guess i should be used to by now to get all type of negativity towards the ps3.. it's ok... i still love it
Like I said in my original post on the first thread regarding this news, cue the sony fanbots who will immediately scream "Who cares about this game? You can have it!" Thanks again for proving me right.
Its funny how I never was interested in this game on PS2 (Playstation gamer) but the thought of it being a 360 exclusive makes me want it now.... strange
If you want to play katamari on your PS3.. go buy the PS2 versions from the bargain bin or used; it will look very nice upscaled to HD and is essentially the same game as BK.
#9 I feel the same way. For me any game on 360 is instantly better than it's Playstation counterpart simply because of Xbox Live. I have dozens of people on my friends list I'm always chatting about games with, getting tips from, etc. It's the reason I went with MS instead of Sony this generation.
I think the reason that people are saying that this could help cause the PS3 to fail is because $ony (yes i flipped that around on Sony this time MS haters) has lost yet another exclusive. Add that with games like GTA IV and Assassin's Creed and the PS3 isn't giving consumers much of a choice over the 360. And this move could push some units in Japan.
I agree with Todd on why it is kind of a big deal. I think the fact that this game isn't a shooter/action game also magnifies its impact. The Xbox needs more casual type games like this.
I love how you start rolling up continents. If this thing is priced right with multiplayer online and offline I will so be buying it. And Sony fans, I'm sorry, really.
Are we for sure the planet is where it stops? Wouldn't be the frickin' shit if afterwards you actually rolled up the planet and started picking up junk and moons all across space?
I think part of the argument of this weakening the ps3 is because this game may draw the japanese to the 360. The last time I checked the 360 of course is in last place in japan but it is picking up steam. So maybe M$ feels that titles like this will draw more people to their system. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Officially the game is multiplatform. If it goes exclusive it will be announced at E3 or min-E3 or some other event like that (All the E3's are too confusing now.)
I'm not really seeing what's new about this game, even compared to KD. I mean, yeah, I guess they made the big land-chunks you roll up into more realistic landforms, but it's basically the same...
#30 it is basically the same concept just a different scope, but I think what MS is trying to do is get ps2 owners to "betray" the Playstation brand and get them to switch to the 360 (along with a $200 price difference, $120 if you want the elite). Microsoft is starting to bring out the big guns guys. The PS3 doesn't have too much on tap for the future (I'm speaking from now til the end of the year, X-mas time). This is the time of the year where the big 3 need to plan for the Christmas season and right now MS has the ball
I own the original Katamari Damacy. I understand the game's charm, the unique physics, and the the breath of fresh air the game provides. However, I find the amount of sequels it's generated a little ridiculous.
The original developer isn't even in charge of it anymore, is he? I think the people that own the rights to this game took a nice, fresh idea and absolutely spoiled it by pumping out mindless sequel after mindless sequel. I'll pass on any future installments of this franchise that never should have been a franchise.
"I own the original Katamari Damacy. I understand the game's charm, the unique physics, and the the breath of fresh air the game provides. However, I find the amount of sequels it's generated a little ridiculous."
Eh, hasn't there only been one sequel so far? Or are you counting the portable version as a sequel? Anyhow, I bought a PS2 late last generation and never played the original. I'm looking forward to the 360 version of the game.

Yeah, I was counting the portable version as well. Couples with the version coming to Xbox 360, that would make 3. And I suppose that's actually not too terribly many. But I still think it would have been better left alone, at least for a while.
On the other hand, I think making this an XBLA title rather than a full physical release is a brilliant idea.
@#24 Amos: There was a level in We ♥ Katamari where you rolled up all the stars, planets, etc... The object was to get the Katamari large enough so you could roll up the Sun.
P.S. If you look closely the ball is moving like a smooth circle. If you remember the PS2 game, each piece changed the surface area of the ball meaning it rolled differently depending on how it is shaped.
So how the fuck did it move to a more powerful system and received WORSE physics? @,@;

no i think you misunderstood the argument.
Kamatari was only for made for sony, and switching over to microsoft says how the ps3 may fail.
i could easily be wrong.
but thats how I thought it was going down?

XBLA? How disapointing... I was actually expecting to add a decent game to my physical collection for the 360. Guess Bioshock is the next one then. =/

Now if they could use the RB for a "fun mode".
Markusdragon @ Jun 17th 2007 6:07AM
Of course, By the look of it, the big advancement here is the lack of mid-level loading screens.
The PS2 never was powerful enough for Katamari, really.

XBLA makes sense. The game has run it's course. I wouldn't buy another full price Katamari game, but I'd blow $10 on a download.

Me and George W. Bush used the Katamari rolling over continents in Katamari to outline our foreign policy.
Very inspirational.

I don't think that this game not coming to the PS3 will hurt the PS3.
I do think that it is a sign that the PS3 is hurting.
But I also expect this game to be available for the Wii and the PS2 at some point.
