Best RPG of the 16-Bit era, one of the best game ever... and has aged pretty well to boot.

Chrono Cross WAS great, but maybe _the_ thing about Chrono Trigger that makes it as great as it does (and something that's gone quite unplagiarized since then, thank you very much) is its BREVITY.

It's a tight, well-plotted RPG, which is the one thing that virtually no titles in the genre (no matter how well-respected they might be; Dragon Quest is stil lauded when each new installment exceeds eighty hours of gameplay) have picked up on.

I don't see why SquareEnix is taking the stand they are when it comes to supporting VC, PSN, and XBLA. They have so many insanely popular games in their back catalog that releasing them to these services would be as close as you can get to legally printing your own money.

I own Chrono Trigger and most of the other SNES games released in the US by Square (even Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest and Super Mario RPG [published by Nintendo but made by Square]) so unless they were to release games that weren't originally released over here there aren't many from that generation that I would buy besides a few of the better Enix releases.

@ Ian Von Porter

If you are playing it via emulation then why don't you just increase the emulation speed to speed it up? That is the way I play older menu based RPG's the few rare times I play them through emulation. If your computer can handle it then 10x emulation is a quick way to make it through many older titles. You can't beat squeezing 60 minutes of progress into 6 minutes of playing time. Reading the text will slow you down a bit but you will fly through the game-play.

Having played CT later than it was released, I didn't much enjoy it at all.
The storyline was dull. The main cast lacked character development. The majority of the endings suck. The battle system was okay though!

But the story being mediocre killed it for me.

If you're short on time, skip the article and just go play the game (preferably in a legal manner). Honestly, why read an analysis of a game when you can play it and form your own opinion? It's not like he's introducing a lost classic that many people didn't know about, it's Chrono Trigger!

Chrono Cross was trash. The only good thing about that game was the soundtrack.

Radical Dreamers is a better game. That's if you like text games.

Chrono Trigger is like the first Matrix movie. You can't touch it. Its just that good.

I played this for the first time a few years back on an emulator.. just a few days after I'd spent a fortune to upgrade my PC to play Doom3.

Needless to say, Doom3 went unplayed for a very long time, and Chrono Trigger remains in my top 5 games of all time.

Why oh why has there not been a GBA or DS version in all this time? It saddens me.

PS/ That courtroom scene was the best thing ever..

"We'll do our part and keep our fingers crossed for a Virtual Console release of the title, however impossible that may be."

First of all, that's just in Japan. Second, S-E basically stated recently that they are reconsidering that.

My friend has raved about this game. I'm planning on buying a Wii within the next couple of weeks. If Square-Enix brings Chrono Trigger to the Virtual Console, I'll most definitely purchase it. I could use a good turn-based RPG.

I am sorry but you nevo gamers suck with your so called "innovative new games" Chrono cross was disgusting from the stupid battle system to the plot to the story,FF pretty much died after FF7,FF8 was pure BS with a plot/story almost as bad as CC ,FF9 so far is the best of the 3D FFs what ti loses to story makes up for in a fun FF style equipment and exp system,X/X2 more watered down mainstream FF and 12 is a fing joke the LP board is the worst setup I have seen in any RPG ,the plot/story as good as it might be just cant save the game play and skill system from generic mediocrity, you heard it here FF4 and 6 are the best FFs yet.

BTW its a good thing DW/DQ was not released for the SNES because it suffered from being generic, even 8 is not better than DQ 3 or 4.

Doom 3 was nuts wasnt it, they focused so much on the graphics and left the gameplay and level design undead...I mean DOOM was never abotu the "graphics" it was abotu large well built levels and fighting hordes of the undead not abotu fighting acouple high rez zombies in the fing DARK!!.....

Quake 4 is as bad and its a shame another great FPS sullied into mediocrity in order to sale....oh wait...Q4 sold badly.....serves them right >>

Bioshock is coming out I have my FPS wet dreams pined on it.

///....rant end .....maybe >>

What I really want is a proper remake or a new sequel, I never get sick of this game, best RPG EVER.

No way in HELL Chrono Cross was better, what's wrong with you people?

Sure, let's add a hojillion characters so that their interactions are forcibly limited and shallow! Let's take one of the most loved combat systems of all time and throw it out the window; and while we're at it, remove all conceivable logic from spellcasting! Let's take one of the most enticing gameplay elements - combo moves - throw most of them out, and HIDE the ones that are left!

Ew ew ew ew eeeeeww! Cross suuucked! Cookie-cutter square nonsense where they throw out intuitiveness for fake innovation.

I'm fairly certain the only people who like cross better are probably those who got their start on playstation.

I agree, that has to be the reason since CT is clearly the better of the too. Square has put out a lot of mess in the years following their SNES days.

Otis Whitaker, bite your filthy, filthy tongue. Chrono Trigger had an epic story, and as a previous poster commented it was paced well and you never had the 2-hour slumps where you forget what you're even supposed to be doing, like most RPGs today do. I would gladly make CT my first VC purchase.
