Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 kicking this fall
The next installment Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series (also known as Winning Eleven in Japan and America) is coming this fall.
The title touts an adaptive AI system entitled Teamvision. According to press release, "all 'Next Gen' versions [PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360] will also benefit from an extensive Edit mode, allowing gamers to customise their PES experience."
In addition to the aforementioned next-gen platforms, PES 2008 is coming to Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and PS2 -- sorry, Wii fans, you'll have to settle for Electronic Arts' FIFA 08, with Ronaldinho, which is also due out this fall for every console known to Man.

Hello, again, shiny plastic figures, how I missed thee.
Jonathan Tran @ Jun 18th 2007 3:14PM
wow it's just like playing with REAL ACTION FIGURES
also, will there be a PRO-INTELLIGENT DESIGN SOCCER coming out?

So no COD4 or Pro Evo on Wii.
This I really don't get since there is a PS2 version.

The above photos perfectly show how these "next gen" systems are still incapable of rendering a decent human figure. (I assume those pics are from the 360 or PS3 due to the lack of obvious polygons and jaggies) I'm not knocking this game but all games with human characters look like this. The colors are artifically bright, the clothing looks like a fiberglass shell encasing the body, and the humans look like wax figures with dead eyes. Take a look at that goulish woman on the left to see a stereotypical CGI videogame person in action. (That is a woman isn't it?)
I'm not saying this to excuse Nintendo for using yesterday's technology in the Wii, but this game does go to show how the truely next gen consoles often give us the same ugly CGI models that we've been looking at for 6 years - only with crisper polygon boundaries.
Consoles, especially next gen consoles, can make beautiful games based on machines, but organic human figures still look like sh*t. The next gen consoles may have the pixels and serious muscle under their hoods, but something fundamental is still missing from the equation.

True. A lot of next-gen graphics that attempt to make realistic humans just give me the creeps. Here's hoping that the next round of big xbox games will either get it right (doubtful), or modify their art direction so that the characters don't look like Zombies (unless it's Dead Rising 2, of course).
xno @ Jun 18th 2007 3:58PM
well fifa's titles don't look that plastic like but the game play sucks ass compared to pes or winning eleven so... i just hope that this one is not just an other release with only afew improvements like their last game.

In honesty, I could care less that they look like dolls, they don't move like them (at least in their previous series), PES has some of the most fluid animation in a sports game I've ever seen.
I'm just happy that edit mode will be coming back, that feature got chopped in 2007 which made my upgrade from PS2 to 360 a bit of a disappointment (good thing I have Dead Rising too). I'm assuming with the full edit mode back, you can update your own rosters, or start a master league team with your own custom roster, features both missing from the 2007 version on 360.
Jonathan Tran @ Jun 18th 2007 4:29PM
I agree that HL2 has the most realistic looking humans I have seen. Realistic skin, good animation, etc. Compare to FEAR's "amazing graphics" where everyone looks like a GIJoe
THA1icarus @ Jun 18th 2007 5:02PM
What they could do is make Pro Zombie Soccer....
Ore Pro Alien Soccer to counter that plastic doll effect.

Waggle tacked-on versions of games are surely better than no games. I'm really wondering why there isn't a wii version (ported PS2 version w/ added waggle) too. It's actually kinda weird considwering the game coming out on every other system out that's officially being supported. (it and GBA)

Just think back to how the first Pro Evo looked on the PS2 compared to the graphics in Pro Evo 6, its just a case of the developer getting to grips with the console.
I dont get why people act as this is good as it's going to get graphics wise with these next gen consoles.
aggrocrag @ Jun 18th 2007 6:39PM
Personally, I'm very excited about this new game. Winning Eleven 2007 for the Xbox 360 was a really weak way to get into the next gen. I hope they manage to get all the English Premiership teams and bring back the Bundesliga. A new and cleaner looking presentation would make me very happy as well.

If you think about it, the graphics in this game doesn't really matter as much as the gameplay. You guys bitch about how gameplay suffers for the sake of graphics, but when konami goes and focuses on what's important (gameplay) we whine about the subpar graphics. When you play, you're zoomed so far out like you need to be to get a good view of as much as the pitch as you can, the kit details and facial feature don't really matter. all that stuff comes into play only when you watch the replays. i guess yeah, great gfx would be nice, but the accurate representation of football is what makes PES/WE great.
