This was a compelling deal for both sides. What people seem to forget (or intentionly ignore\dismiss) is that the XBL Marketplace is a place where Microsoft partners with other developers to deliver content to the customer. And believe it or not, it DOES have its advantages.

What does this mean? Say for example you are Publisher A. You want to develop and release games on a console. Microsoft comes to you and says: "Hey, why don't you partner with us and develop games on the 360?".

You think, ok - dev tools are pretty good, installed base ain't too shabby, the console is pretty powerful. Sure, I'll do it.

Then Microsoft says: "After you make all that $ selling your games to the masses, wouldn't you want to make more with minimal investment?".

You think, you mean it's possible to build upon my existing IP by releasing additional content via XBL? Not only do you not have to worry about a huge dev cycle for an entire game but you can build on the existing marketing to EXTEND your current investment. Now, THAT'S what I call a partnership.

Let MS handle the logistics of managing the marketplace, servers, etc. You just put it out on the store.

Sure, many people HATE microtransactions, but really this is the future of content delivery. Look at what Vavle's Steam is doing in the PC world. Other publishers are jumping on their bandwagon. In this case, Take Two is simply taking advantage of Microsoft's strengths to provide gamers with more content. So what if they make $ off of it, that's the whole point. Besides, you don't have to buy it.

worlds fastest burger....how does it taste?
rights to get episodic content....how good and how much is it...50mil for 2 packs are kinda a waste on M$ count. they might use this against us!
interviewer: are you aware of problems with custumer service, falure rates of your system and Xbox live?

M$:well they can't bitch on a count of us spending 50 million in making episodic content! Falure rate!? HAHA! Customer service? hell do we still have people alive on the other line?! i thought we laid them off! and xbox live...whats wrong with that?! we gave them a quality system that is super great than any 600 dollar blu-ray player or a motion sensitive toy! so they have no reason to whine cause we gave them a quality"snicker" gaming system....AHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
ok so when do we start the interview.....

interviewer:uhhh this is going live right now...

M$:oh ummm....
"I would go back and say the vast majority of people love their experience. We continue to go back and address all of these issues on a case by case basis. There is a vocal minority out there. We go off and try to address their issues as quickly and as pain free as possible."

14. $50 million.. thats more than the development budget of most AAA games... and for add on content. And, they wont even be able to sell it at full price, and the use base is smaller (you need an HDD).

Lets be honest here wht your saying is in theory not reality. If the 360's user base is say 13 million and well over 7 million are on XBL (Requires hard drive) how many more people who do'nt have XBL have a HDD just to be hypothetical lets say 4 million your telling me that you think 2 million people have don't have an HDD???? Man be serious.

Anyway good job MS the episodic content could include a new part to the city so the 50 million(Which is like 50 bucks to MS) could be very good

You'd be surprised, I'm a gamer's gamer, but there are actually people out there who can only afford one system, and many of those are simply Sony loyalists. Not fanboys, just loyal to Sony for what they got with the PS2. I know several and I can assure you if they want GTA IV, some extra downloads are not going to amount to squat. Personally, I'm not sure which one I'll get. I never even got through the past 3 GTA's but I still own them for xbox. What are some downloads going to do for me if the game is deep as it is? If the graphics and sound are better on PS3, I can assure you I'll be picking that one up. If not, then it'll be the 360 version. One other factor is if they are going to do anything with multiplayer.

MS will get that money back in the licensing fees for GTAIV (with more sales since only the 360 has the extra content) -- and through their % on the marketplace transactions.

Its a brilliant move on their part.

Sheppy,

See, the "M$"-using dorks (note to the 360 fanboys, that's idiots who use "M$" and think it's clever, not people who have a 360, so don't go apeshit) did show up after all. I win again. Hooray for predictability.

And to Negativecool and Hardcore, who gives a shit? If the content is good and fun to play and people want it, let 'em buy it. You types always tend to forget that no one's forcing anyone to by the DLC. Jesus, don't you people ever get tired of hauling out the same old complaints? You add nothing to a discussion.

They shot themselves in the foot announcing it so early. It's like ok; here's the game; by the way ours is superior because we have exclusive episodic content that will cost you 20.00 or more down the line. We'll get 80.00 or more from you.
The game that is shipping will be complete for one console and incomplete for ours as soon as it's in your hands because we have exclusive episodic content coming THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR!!! And enjoy waiting to the end of 2008 to get it too.

Here are some real options.

Suggestion to the 360 fanboys! Why bother buying the game at launch? Wait till the end of 2008; buy the game used on Ebay or craigslist for 30.00 - 35.00. Then download the Episodic content that they will charge you 20.00 or more for and you'll come out paying roughly 55.00 - 59.00 for the game including the episodic content!!!!!
PS3 and 360 owners like myself can do this!!!!
Screw Rockstar and Microsoft by renting the game instead of purchasing it; beat the game, send it back; rent it again when the episodic content comes out and pay to download it. You'll still come out cheaper!!!!

ROFLMAO

hey JesseJames, good idea.

by that logic, everyone should've waited till the middle of '08 to buy a PS3. by then the PS3 will have some major games, Home, rumble, and maybe have PSN all 'caught up' to XBL.

and the best part is by then, it may even be the price of a 360 was at launch over a year and a half ago.

@konajinx

sorry sarcasm doesnt float well when typed... although, this game doesnt even interest me one bit... regardless of size or content. That said, ive played every GTA to date and finished them all, except for san andreas... it just got old.. stale, boring... its the same game over and over with fresh coats of paint and altered mechanics... and i dont like playing as a stereo-typed politically incorrect character who smokes crack and bangs shorties and shoots gangsta's.

And im still waiting for a good game on the 360 (3 just doesnt cut it)... GeoW, FFXI, and Crackdown only last so long (well not FFXI...)

Tell me why i paid $400(450 if you count the fact that i bought the warranty, and actually used it for a new system after 8 months) +the 40$ XBL subscription per year...
but for some reason... my PS3 is being used 90% of the time... i dont buy into "promises" i buy into gaming that WILL be fun regardless.

Too many people here dont appreciate gaming. Theyre too sucked into a stupid war, choosing sides and complaining about everyone else.
Go play a game... if its good its good. if its on PS3, 360, or even Wii... dont spend all your time at work (or school) posting on these sites about how uber you and your 360/PS3 is and the newest game that will PWN the other console...

Hey; I can rent the game; beat it; send it back then rent it again; pay and download the episodic content while it's all still fresh without having to pay 59.99 and have to wait a year then pay 20.00 or 30.00 more. I can rent it out locally or using gamefly and save myslef a ton of money. The game won't be stale at all; ROFLMAO.

Paying 59.99 plus 30.00 more for episodic content costs me 89.99 as opposed to renting it or buying it used and still coming out cheaper. Using Ebay and Craigslist you can buy used games within a week or two weeks for 10 - 20.00 cheaper, sometimes more! Why take it back to gamestop and get half the money when you can get a little more for it from someone that wants to save 10 - 20.00 bucks or more then use that money they saved to buy the episodic content.

LOL; new games won't be selling through the roof with all this episodic content!

Rent games people! You rent/download movies; buy them used too; do the same with games. Oh and they stick advertising in these same games and force that down your throat too! Some choice!

Interesting that everyone is saying that the exclusive content will get everyone with both systems to buy it on 360...

Am I the only one who will be shocked if the PS3 release doesn't turn out to be the definitive version? It's a sandbox game, and they've got far more space to work with on the bluray disc. The developers have even commented already at the difficulty of fitting the game on a DVD9. That tells me that textures will be more compressed on 360, the soundtrack might have fewer tracks, and the game itself might have fewer areas to explore... you get the idea.

My understanding was that the PS3 version is to have exclusive content as well, so I'd guess that T2 plans to just include the PS3 exclusive content on the disc with the game... whereas on 360 you'll be paying to download its exclusive content (since they couldn't fit it on the disc even if they wanted to).

Honestly it just works better this way for people with both consoles anyway-- GTA IV can stay in the PS3 drive, while the 360 drive holds either BioShock or Mass Effect. ;)

Who cares. This is not Half-Life where the episodes coninue the story. GTA games are HUGE and they are SANDBOX. That means USD60 for a massive sandbox game on PS3 versus USD90 for what is just a larger sandbox.
And what an awful return on MS' 1-year lead when almost no 3rd party developer is willing to give the 360 any exclusives and MS has to throw money just for add-ons and episodes, that 2 several months down the line. All that "PS3 losing exclusives" talk and now Kane and Lynch is on PS3, Haze is actually a timed exclusive on PS3.
And doesnt it seem that MS is rather cavalier with money - 50 million is 5 times the cost of Gears - maybe because, unlike Sony, MS has the Micro-suckers who love being squeezed, for multiplayer, peripherals like hard drives and wifi, extra warranty and of course game content.

rfom, please don't make anymore arguments unless you know what you're talking about. even sony fanboys mock you.

the $50 million is an *advance*. a LOAN.

and Haze is only a 'timed exclusive' because it directly competes with Halo and even the name is too similar, especially on the shelves for dumb parents.

you really don't get it. all the 360 has to do is play the majority of games as the PS3 for $200 cheaper and it will continue to outsell the PS3. the 360 doesn't really need exclusives, they're just bonus. Kane & Lynch and Haze are made for DVD (360) like the majority of games this generation will be.

#76 - As much as I'd like to believe you're right, GTA IV is a cross-platform game. The PS3 version will very likely be dumbed down to 360's level. Games on PS3 don't really enjoy a technical advantage unless they're specifically designed for the platform. When they are, we get higher quality graphics, 7.1 sound, and inventive motion control (see Resistance, MotorStorm, flOw, and Blast Factor). When they're not, we get 360-level graphics, 5.1 sound, and pointless or no motion control (see ICON, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and NBA Street Homecourt). The only cross-platform game I can think of that really excelled on PS3 was NBA 2K7. Hopefully GTA IV will follow its lead and not Oblivion's.

You're exactly right about the games needing to be "dumbed down" for the 360. I read somewhere (no reference, sorry) that that would be the case with DMC4 for instance.

As for GTA4, we're already seeing that. From what I've read in that regard (again, no reference at this time, sorry), the game scope will be about the same size as the original (GTAIII that is) in terms of how large the area will be (no planes for instance? What's that all about?).

My guess this is a matter of two factors:
1) The difficulty of learning to create a game of this magnitude for the new systems.
2) And second, the limitations of space on the 360's discs.

Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if (once the dev team's gotten used to the hardware of the 360 and PS3) you'll end up seeing the franchise stick to the PS3 in future endevours, simply for the ability to make more massive games.

SO i guess people don't know how this works. Microsoft paid a $50 million advance to Take 2 for future revenue. This means that T2 gets to keep the first $50 million in revenue that they would have to pay in Xbox Marketplace royalties.

Microsoft is out $50million any way you put it. If the GTAIV episodes sell less than 5 million downloads each then MS is out a lot of money. If downloadable revenues surpass $50 million then T2 has to pay MS 30% of its revenue from the downloadable content. Essentially MS is getting the publishers cut.

$50 million in revenue is closer to 10 million units sold when it comes to license rights. Microsofts cut on a $15 downloadable package is probably $5 or so. Thats a pretty lofty goal for extra content packages since you'd almost have to sell the game to your entire installed console base. Even Halo 3 isn't going to do that.
