Metroid Prime 3 details emerge from Play magazine
According to a reader at GoNintendo, stuffed within the pages of the latest issue of Play magazine are a few impressions from the staff's romp with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption at the Nintendo Media Summit. According to Play, Corruption is aimed at Metroid fans and hardcore gamers alike but will still be accessible to grandma thanks to intuitive controls. The game's long delay was to add a "Twilight Princess level of polish" and, in the magazine's own words, Corruption could be the "biggest revolution in FPS gaming since Halo".
Mighty strong opinions from playtesting the demo, but we'll be able to find out for ourselves on August 20. Hit the jump to read more impressions from Play magazine, complete with miniature spoilers!

Gallery: Metroid Prime 3
- On the first level you're attacked on a spaceship while meeting the captain. A boss fight with Ridley concludes the stage. The second level is a floating city with a strong emphasis on exploration.
- Motion controls work better than dual joysticks.
- Super sensitive pointer in "advanced" mode.
- Backtracking makes more sense than in previous Prime installments.
- To switch visors, hold "minus" and flick the Wii remote in a direction.
- As in Super Metroid, Samus' beams can be stacked.

since when was halo a revolution? i just thought it was a good game.
kingofwale @ Jun 24th 2007 8:26PM
>"biggest revolution in FPS gaming since Halo".
HAHA. man, they kill me. *shrugs*, well, at least it's not as ridiculous as the "It's as good as Keyboard and Mouse control". :)
I am counting down the day when they claim themselves as the God, it's only a matter of time now. ;)
Jon @ Jun 24th 2007 8:27PM
Halo wasn't anywhere near revolutionary. It was just a successful mainstream FPS for consoles.
Jerk Face @ Jun 24th 2007 8:30PM
Oh man.. This game is going to be so delicious.
I let out a little bit of pee every time I read something new about it.
But another part of me quivers with impending let down based on all the hype. It better have online multiplayer, god damn it. Nintendo better not drop the ball on that one!
Mr Khan @ Jun 24th 2007 8:31PM
Halo set the bar for FPS gaming, it didn't do anything new, it just got everything right
This COULD be considered a revolution in the console FPS control scheme, depending on how well they nail it
I don't care either way, I like sensitive control schemes, i've always hated dual analogue (which was why i could play Metroid Prime at all, because it was sole analogue), and most importantly, its apparently good for the Metroid fans, which is solidly where i sit
Damn i can't wait
Paviel @ Jun 24th 2007 8:32PM
Is it just me, or does that woman in purple look a bit like Kerrigan from Starcraft?
quazi @ Jun 24th 2007 8:33PM
i love halo and loved the beta but its not a revolutionary fps.well it is only if you consider selling a revolutionary action.its a good game but not greatest fps.
if yet to buy a wii and doubt i will for metroid XD.maybe for galaxies
makesevenupyours @ Jun 24th 2007 8:34PM
i WOULD say it was revolutionary...the first really great console FPS since goldeneye and perfect dark.
most every console shooter after it followed the controls.
[shrugs]
maybe not completely revolutionary, but it definitly changed a lot of things in the industry.
regardless, i am REALLY pumped for metroid. metroid, super smash, and galaxy are why i will be buying a wii this year.
synce @ Jun 24th 2007 8:37PM
Gimmicky controls != revolutionary
Kevin @ Jun 24th 2007 8:40PM
synce, if the Wii's controls make playing a Metroid Prime game more enjoyable than using a regular controller, then I'll take gimmicky controls any day.
Ian Von Porter @ Jun 24th 2007 8:48PM
The only thing Metroid revolutionized was artificially extending the length of the game by hour upon hours of mindless backtracking. I gave up after finishing Prime... it gets lame and gimmick controls wont help.
jay @ Jun 24th 2007 8:49PM
I've always said Halo was a revolutionary FPS. Before that the only console FPS I enjoyed was Goldeneye and nothing has come close to Halo 1 since. It was all down to level design, audio and the "back to basics" feel of the combat system. IMO it worked wonders which is why I was so let down by Halo 2.
It's a bold statement to make that MP3 could be as good as Halo 1. But I can't sit around playing Halo 1 any more, we need something fresh in the genre again.
Either way I adored MP1 (exploration) and 2 (difficulty and basic multiplayer). Chances are if they don't drop the ball for whatever reason then it'll be yet another super scoring Metroid game.
AND give me Super Metroid already. Jeez! It's the last classic Nintendo game I've got to play.
tim @ Jun 24th 2007 8:49PM
exploration+stacking beams=one happy metroid fan
no really, i am totally psyched for stacking beams
0sc @ Jun 24th 2007 8:52PM
Does anyone know where you can find the actual article online?
ZenGaijin @ Jun 24th 2007 8:54PM
"Motion controls work better than dual joysticks."
I think I'll be the judge of that thank you very much. Finally, a real game to play on the Wii my prayers have been answered.
*blows dust of his Wii*
That sounded wrong
JodyAnthony @ Jun 24th 2007 8:56PM
waah waah i hate wii waah waah - ian van porter
jay @ Jun 24th 2007 9:01PM
LOL @ jody.
Ivan @ Jun 24th 2007 9:03PM
Wait, is Corruption going to have online multiplayer?
Blackie @ Jun 24th 2007 9:07PM
Metriod Prime 3? I thought those screens were of Half-life 1.
Bleorg @ Jun 24th 2007 9:19PM
More like Wolfenstein 3-d !!!!@!!!! BURN!
axt113 @ Jun 24th 2007 9:37PM
From the Article:
The Wiimote offers more precision than a double-stick controller (no need for aim assists here!)and a level of immersion that a mouse and keyboard could never hope to match
cc123 @ Jun 24th 2007 9:44PM
After owning the Wii for a while seeing how the motion controls work in reality as opposed to the over hyped BS most places make it out to be, I will take a "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude.
Also I never saw Halo as a revolution but it may just have been my point of view since I was into PC fps games at the time.
Jenova @ Jun 24th 2007 9:44PM
Those are some really old screens. Apparently older than most of the peeps posting. ZING!
bm @ Jun 24th 2007 9:50PM
Haha. Nintendo has all these critically acclaimed iconic franchises that shaped the industry as it is, all of which are first party, meaning they will -never- be on another console, not now, not "possibly" in the future. Knowing this, it is so amusing watching the bitterness of MS/Sony fanbabies basically dripping off the screen while going through the Joystiq comment sections. "Waah waah waah" indeed. :)
Jason @ Jun 24th 2007 10:06PM
@Ivan:
This is probably NOT going to have online multiplayer. On the official nintendo website it says this game is 1 player and has for quite a while. If this is true, it completely sucks. I'm still buying it though.
Kevin @ Jun 24th 2007 10:16PM
I guess Blackie has never played Half-Life before.
Rubang B @ Jun 24th 2007 10:27PM
Jenova, that zing was brilliant.
Anyway, who decided Halo was a revolution? It had piss-poor level design. I was designing better levels for Doom 2 when I was 15. I guess you could say it picked up where GoldenEye and Perfect Dark left off after Rare turned into crap, but the console FPS revolution was GoldenEye, not Halo.
Halo 1 or 2 couldn't even sell more copies on the HaloBox than GoldenEye sold on the Mario64Box. Ain't that a bitch.
ck @ Jun 24th 2007 10:38PM
Why the hell would Metroid 3 have multiplayer? Did you try playing the 2nd one with multiplayer? It just didn't work. Hunters for the DS was okay, but nothing special. And I'm guessing MP3 really isn't the flagship title that Nintendo wants to sell as their first foray into the online market. Metroid was always more of a go it alone game experience.
But as far as revolutionary, I think I'm with the skeptics and sitting this one out until I play it.
RPGS @ Jun 24th 2007 10:46PM
LOL jealous haters!
Jones @ Jun 24th 2007 10:47PM
@ post two
Read a little closer next time. All the comments about "most revolutionary FPS since Halo" and motion controlling being better than normal controllers is coming from Play magazine, not Nintendo.
mrfong @ Jun 24th 2007 10:55PM
Shit, those screens look horrible, but trust me guys, it looks a heck of a lot better in real life, I played it at the fusion tour (totally worth the 2.5 hour wait).
abermaelon @ Jun 24th 2007 11:08PM

Rubang, your work here is done. Since reading your post I now regret having played Halo 1, 2, and H3 beta for countless hours and having lots of what I thought was fun. I am rushing out immediatly and purchasing a Wii, and will unceremoniously smash my Halo box 360 and all my games to pieces.
joemoemino @ Jun 24th 2007 11:19PM
Halo was revolutionary because of recharging shields (which every FPS game and their mom has now), a single button for grenades (which most FPS games also have) and a button for melee attack.
Also the multiplayer is the shit.
Foetoid @ Jun 24th 2007 11:19PM
@28 What do you mean first foray into online multiplayer? I've owned Mario Strikers Charged Football for weeks and been playing online (it's already released in Aus)
Shagittarius @ Jun 24th 2007 11:27PM
METROID PRIME 3 : CRAPTION
Grog @ Jun 24th 2007 11:29PM
abermaelon-
I think Rubang's point was more that it wasn't a revolutionary game, not that it wasn't fun. As for the Halobox comment, I think that was only to indicate that Goldeneye sold more on a notoriously-scary-for-third-parties system than Halo, Microsoft's flagship, did on Xbox.
Rubang B @ Jun 24th 2007 11:39PM
What I'm saying is that anybody who considers Halo a huge console FPS revolution is too young to remember GoldenEye. They might as well have named Perfect Dark GoldenEye 2 and named Halo GoldenEye 3. But remember folks, just because you're 14 doesn't mean good games didn't exist before you turned 11.
@abermaelon, I never said it wasn't fun. I said it wasn't revolutionary. I'm not even defending the Wii or attacking the 360 here, so I have no idea what you're talking about. But, if you must know, yes, what you own is in fact a Microsoft HaloBox.

"I am rushing out immediatly and purchasing a Wii, and will unceremoniously smash my Halo box 360 and all my games to pieces."
Better that you do it before it Red Rings on itself.
...probably again.
Anyway, as much as I love Nintendo, I hate First Person Shooters even more...so I'll be passing on this.
Ian Von Porter @ Jun 24th 2007 11:46PM
I get the feeling that Metroid Prime 3 = RedSteel 1.5 due to the controls... now seriously, this is going to be a step backwards for FPSs: no strafing, no quick turn around, boxed aiming field, frame turning perimeter, etc, etc. Not to mention the N64 graphics we've seen so far.
Whats new? Ooooh, waggle the wiimote to reload. So revolutionary!

Then that proves you are a fool, Play magazine already said its better than dual analog and more immersive than K/M
Wii is the future of all gaming, deal with it
kingofwale @ Jun 25th 2007 12:08AM
>Play magazine already said its better than dual analog and more immersive than K/M
yeah, because Play magazine SAID so, right? I wonder if Play magazine's Nintendo kool-aid drinkers wet themselves, will you do it too? ;)♠♠
makesevenupyours @ Jun 25th 2007 12:08AM
actually there was no strafing in metroid prime 1 or 2, but it WILL be possible in 3.
and if only red steel didnt suck...
really though, i am totally excited for this game.
and you could make a case for the original xbox being a "halobox." even though it had plenty of other great games. but the 360 is by no means a halobox 360. there are tons of great games already available for the system, with plenty more coming outthis year. and they are expanding out of the shooter market with many more rpgs and acion games.
Rod Oracheski @ Jun 25th 2007 12:08AM
"biggest revolution in FPS gaming since Halo"
That doesn't really mean much, even though I haven't seen the article itself, if it was written by Halverson.
The guy proclaimed Sonic 360 as a potential Game of the Year for crying out loud, and spent four or five pages gushing about Bulletwitch.
cc123 @ Jun 25th 2007 12:14AM
@40
Play also calls Halo a revolution in the same article so their OPINION of what is and isn't a revolution is called into question.
Also I've seen video of this being played and the word revolution did not come to mind. It uses a bounding box and while the aiming within the box seems very nice, moving the view/box appeared awkward.
"Wii is the future of all gaming, deal with it"
Exaggerate much?
blk_ballard @ Jun 25th 2007 12:16AM
Okay, first of all, watch the language. Secondly, I'm sooooo excited for this game! It looks absolutely incredible.

I will be very irate if they sully this game with Multiplayer like they sullied MP:2. This game is NOT a FPS. Stop calling it that. It's a First Person ADVENTURE. Meaning exploration is more important than shooting your stupid gun.
samfish @ Jun 25th 2007 12:49AM

Complaining about Metroid having a multi-player mode is akin to complaining about special extra features on a DVD.
It's there if you want it, and if you choose to ignore it, it does literally nothing to dampen your enjoyment of the game.
abermaelon @ Jun 25th 2007 12:58AM

Your right, I did miss Rubangs point. I should maybe read posts more thoroughly.
@Rubang
Yeah, 15 million copies, that could be a good or bad thing.
