Sony E3 invite hints at Killzone 2 unveiling

We love receiving mysterious packages at Joystiq HQ and are particularly enamored by the ones that don't violently explode upon their opening. The card pictured above matches the latter description, though it seems to indicate that demolition and destruction is nevertheless in our near future. The card glibly invites its recipient to attend a unique two and a half hour Sony event on the evening of July 10th, just as Min-E3 gets underway.

Unless Sony has taken a very interesting approach to promoting the next SingStar, the disagreeable fellow on the card implies that Killzone 2 will be the event's focus. Considering the event's length and the game's brief showing at GDC, a playable version of the anticipated shooter seems increasingly likely to appear. Once we finally see whether or not it lives up to the infamous 2005 prerendered trailer graphically, we can move on to more pertinent questions like, "Is it any fun?" We suspect we'll have an answer next month.

Soiny better prey that Killzone actualy gameplay vs. the '05 trailer doesn't end up like Motorstorm actual gameplay vs. the 05' trailer. If it does, you can officially put a fork in this company.

Who cares about "Killzone 2 looking better" when 1 was absolutely terrible. I don't get how people can get excited about it. It's like if they announced a Shadowrun 2 or Mario Sunshine 2.

Killzone 1 wasn't terrible, just flawed. It gets a bad rep. The Killzone "universe" has a great atmosphere, great design, and an interesting premise. It's stupid to wish ill on a series with such promise.

I cant wait for a side by side comparision, target render vs actual gameplay. Sony talked the talk now its time to walk the walk.

After seeing how good Call of Duty 4 is looking, im thinking they could actually pull it off.

This game is crazy. It is mainly hyped by those that want to see it fail. After E3 2005, where Sony and Guerilla "cheated" by showing fake footage and making it seem real, Sony fanboys gloated in triumph, as if the 360 was just obsoleted.

360 owners, and those like myself that delayed a 360 purchase because of the footage, were pissed to hear it was all a hoax. Sony later said it will be better than the 05' footage. Considering it is a Killzone game, I will be very impressed if it looks better than Resistance and will crap my pants if it plays better.

Or maybe somebody unlocked the secret, hidden powers of The Cell. Hell, that almost sounds like part of a fantasy game.

Oh dear. The attack of the 360 fanboys.

Halo 3 looks shit. I can't see any Xbox 360 fanboys complaining there. The graphics are seriously underwhelming. But then again, the gameplay is supposedly great so the graphics don't matter, RIGHT? Halo 3 isn't the best Xbox 360 game due to be released. There are far more interesting games to be released on the 360, such as Bioshock and PGR4 of course. Mass Effect is also another game that I'm keeping an eye on.

And to write off a game before you have seen any footage of it... lol. Killzone 1 wasn't a bad game, but it was flawed from a technical standpoint. I bet you if Killzone was being published by Microsoft every 360 fan would be creaming their pants in anticipation.

It would be far more sensible to make a comment after seeing some sort of footage instead of writing a game off completely. But I can see the 360 fanboys on this website attempting to analyse every last detail in comparison to the E3 trailer. I'm convinced if the graphics are good, they'll write off the gameplay.

What to do? Wait for 11th June morons.

The first Killzone was horrible. It was like a boring ass railshooter. Especially the beginning level. I will stop for now you PS3 owners really need something to look forward to. While I doubt it'll look %100 as good as the 2005 trailer, as long as it comes close (at least closer than Motorstorm came to its pre-rendered trailer) I'll still be happy. Sony knows how important it is for Killzone to stay close to the trailer's quality, and seeing how much time and money has been put into this game I believe it has a good chance of achieving that.

I've come down hard on Sony for the longest time but I actually think that they will pull it off or they wouldn't be hyping it by making it the focal point of the conference, let's see. On a side note if they don't show anything that looks as good or better Sony is Fuct bigtime.

By the way, what's it like to own a console that doesn't get any marketing for it, yet it's half-pint handheld brother gets tons of it? I mean...you can actually play games on a PSP. But you're right...that $600 was money well spent.

You and me both Jake. I saw a few cool things coming out of Microsoft at E305, but Killzone blew everything else out of the water. E306 was a different story. Gears of War and BioShock really turned my opinion around with the help of a $600 price tag not being mine to pay.

Very ballsy move by Sony to hold this right after (during?) the MS keynote AND send invitations with a Helghast soldier on them.

After keeping this game under lock and key for over 2 years....I highly doubt that Sony would show it now if they did not think that it will live up to the hype. Think about it, nothing has been seen about this game for over 2 years...why show if off now if it is not ready?
They could wait till TGS07 if they thought it needed more polish.

That Sony is going to make Killzone the focal point of their event leads me to believe that this game is going to put the PS3 on the map and it will show once and for all why the PS3 out-classes the RROD60.

We will all know in a few short weeks...Crap60 fanboys will either be crying next to their overheated60 or they will be all over the blogs saying I told you so.

Sony knows that this game is TOOOOOO important to their future...if they fuck this up then they REALLY will be in trouble...if they knock peoples socks off then they will position themselves once again to take over another generation of hardware.

My money is on Sony wowing the crowd.

Wow, all the hate on Killzone 1...

Personally, I think Killzone is better than Halo in just about every way, Setting, graphic style, weapons, levels, etc etc.

BUT, Halo is just more fun to play, PERIOD! Especially online.

Well I know I'm the minority in saying this but, I hope this game beats the pants off Halo 3(not saying Halo3 is a bad game, of course it's not).

Good competition never hurt anyone (See Nintendo and Sony late 90's, looks like Nintendo has made a turn-around).

The instant I get a release date for this I will buy a PS3. Killzone was a very good game and I have been waiting for this one since it became apparent a sequel would be made.

I don't know why all this Sony Bashing is happening. I love my Xbox360, but it doesn' mean I don't like my Sony TV or want a PS3.

If I were in your camp I'd try not to hype up this game to be a "360 killer/killer amp/whatever else" because.. well.. it was done with Motorstorm and something else I forget (no one really cared for anyways) but it was hyped non-stop to just take over the 360 and look how that turned out....
