Still havent played the PS2 God of War games, but I signed up for the demo UMD of this one. Hopefully I'll end up getting one. Perhaps I should rent one of the PS2 games

The funny thing is that Chains of Olympus will look 10x better than anything that will ever appear on the Wii. If they did a direct port, they would have to downgrade the graphics.

I could write a Hello World program with bad enough code to use all of the processor's capability in a much more powerful machine than the PSP. I'd be more impressed if they start using less processor with the same results.

So... it's more powerful than a PS2 now? Sure, the battery might last 3 minutes, but for games that look that good, I wont mind. Who goes outside for 3 minutes anyway, I mean come on.

My PSP charges last between 5-6 hours...

I'm currently playing through Children Of Mana on DS Lite at hour 12 right now, and I'm on my third charge.

DS's "sleep mode" drains batteries much fast than PSPs (once had a game of FFVII on "sleep" for 3 weeks)

Your DS Lites battery is defective then, sheppy. On max brightness it should have a charge time close to 9 hours. On min brightness its closer to 20 hours. Do you play with the volume up all the way? That adds to battery drain as well.

Oh, and on PSP sleep mode: I would say that its a no brainer that its sleep mode is better, as the memory state can be written directly to the memory card and then the thing can shut down. The only thing that happens in DSL sleep mode is the screens turn off, and the game is paused. The DS never really goes to sleep.

Actually, Crono, on full bright with decent volume, DS Lite is reported supposed to get 6-7 hours. I was halfway through a charge when I started COM (before that, I was TRYING to beat Ouendon's hardest setting... Ready Steady Rock kicks my ass everytime). So I would say it's defective, it's getting about the same time other people are getting.

I get about 10-11 hours on my DS lite with full brightness and volume up. I get about 5-6 hours on my PSP with full brightness and at 333mhz at all times thanks to Dark_Alex (except for in the XMB where it's not necessary, not that I'm in that much)

I think either the rest of you are liars or just not charging your systems completely, or have defective batteries. My batteries in both handhelds are great.

The battery life on the PSP is fine as long as you use the sleep mode and recharge after every couple uses. I'm more interested in them releasing a redesign that increases battery life at the full speed, then we'll start seeing some great graphics and hopefully a real portable mobile entertainment device. Utilizing the PSP store and downloads are more realistic with a 333mhz processor, now they just need to resolve the internal storage issue.

My DS Lite gets 11 hours on max brightness with headphones. Though the times appear to be different if playing a 2D or 3D game.
My PSP got around 5 hours of ROM playing (333mhz mode?).

Either way I wouldn't like to play a 333mhz PSP on the road again. No way. As someone else already said - I'd be more impressed if they coded it better and got the same graphics output on a lower speed setting.

I'm curious as to how many of you (especially DS owners) actually leave the house (read: your parent's basement). On the el train here in Chicago I have seen numerous PSPs but never a DS.

As for the battery, I can play some wipeout on my morning commute to work, get an hour of Bleach eps on my lunch (PSP really needs a stand for watching videos) and then some GTA:VCS on the way home with 2/3 of the battery still charged.

Sheppy, if you're just starting hour 12, and you get 6-7 hours of battery life, then you should almost be on your second charge (still running off the first) not the third. You're either lying or you battery is defective. As others have already said, DS on max brightness gets 9-11 hours. On min brightness (still brighter than DSPhat), it gets 20. PSP has barely enough battery life to watch a UMD movie from start to finish, and only 6 hours of gaming between charges as long as there isn't heavy UMD use going on. How much shorter do you think its gonna get when they ramp up the clock speed 50%?

I'm no mathematician, but there's no way 266 + 111 = 333. It's actually 67, which would represent a relative increase in raw processing power of 25%, not over 40% that 111 would bring. Doesn't sound like much of an increase once you look at is as a percent, but who knows how efficient the PSP's CPU will run at full speed.

I'm pretty sure the PSP is clocked at 222, not 266. Therefore, 111 Mhz is half of that, thus 333 mhz is 50% faster than 222.

@gullum,

I ride the 'el' all the time, and I use my DS on the longer trips. However, my daily commute is from Clark & Division to Monroe on the Red Line so it hardly seems worth it to use for my daily commute. I would agree with you though, I see more PSP's than DS's, but not a lot of either. Everyone seems to love their Ipod's more here in Chicago.

@Crono...

I already said I started the game with a half charge. Period. The battery started going red last night, as I surpassed hour 12 (truthfully, I could beat the game right now, but I want to wield the Dragon Sword, thus need grind about ten levels). Thus, I would be on my third charge as of putting it in the charger this morning. So according to my numbers, I am correct and not lying. But hey, why believe me. Here are the stats taken from Wikipedia as sourced by Nintendo.

"Extended battery life compared to the original DS. With a full charge on the lowest brightness setting, Nintendo states the charge will last between 15 and 19 hours; on the highest brightness setting, five to eight hours (both are dependent on the type of game activity). After five hundred charges, the battery life drops to roughly 70%. The original DS was supplied with a 850mAh battery, while the DS Lite has a 1000mAh battery. "

T.White and Crono:

You're both right. The PSP's CPU was capped at 266Mhz, but the majority of games still ran at 222Mhz. So, it depends on which speed you consider to be the "standard" I suppose.

Battery life depends also on the game you are playing. They have tested the PSP in 2004 and thay found that most games lasted about 4 hours, and one even hit at 2h40. Then there was the whole fanboy thing, a bit like these comments: ridge racer lasted 6 hours, i can play 16 hours... etc.

Bottom point is that the frequency has a quadratic influence on the power dissipation. So battery life will be lower, but since the chip isn't the only power consumer and since game can be optimized for lower battery drainage (i think developers already do that) the battery should last over 3-4 hours.
Besides wasn't the battery of the PSP made so you could change it quickly?

Also keep in mind that lithium batteries drop in capacity over time. if you own it for 3 years now, the capacity could be down to 60-50%. Just like computers, the first time they last 3 hours, and after 4 years i have 30 min left :s.
Yet laptops are way hotter i know, and i didn't kept the power level at 40%... yet i don't think the average consumer knows that, or like i: does that.

There's a website about that batteryuniversity or so. But im just an RF-engineer, not a chemical expert.

I would say I see more DS on my line though honestly iPod and cellphone outnumber people playing games like 50:1

So basically every thing SONY creates never reaches it's full potential huh? Who's fault is that? If they would focus on creating something innovative instead of cramming a bunch of technology that doesn't do shit for games into machines but sounds fancy and claiming the best maybe they would actually be doing something.
Plus that PR dept.......oh the PR.

@Spitkicker

Innovation is driven by software, not hardware. If you honestly believe it was the hardware alone that made the DS what it was and what the Wii will hopefully be one day, you're a tragically stupid individual and I'm only sad your mother didn't abort you with the coathanger she stole from Salvation Army while he had the chance....

Damn I'm mean.... I almost felt a tinge of guilt at that bash. But then I remembered this is the internet and seperated from reality. And in reality, I bet you're the best damn frycook your diner has ever seen.
