Three Speech is crap, and so is Sony. It's part of their troll-esque marketing strategy because they obviously can't win by having the superior content anymore, so they do the same thing any little bully does: Start picking on people.

Sony is synonymous with Pathetic.

"When did MS use CG to show off Halo 2? If you're referring to the announcement trailer, the only thing that changed was realtime reflections on the Chief's visor. That was an in-engine trailer (hell, most of it is still in the game), Bungie just realized later in development that the realtime reflections were too much for it to handle."

Uhhh... yeah... reflections.... that and the whole delivering the bomb into the covenant ship. When that sequence was originally shown, it looked much better. The bumpmapping also didn't have the pixel stepladdering edges either persistant in the full release. Likewise, once MS shows the cutscenes, it never has the annoying shallow LOD texture swapping issues.

Microsoft has been passing off CG and artwork as "in game content" since before the original xbox was released. Not saying that Sony doesn't do it, but there's no basis for the "holier than thou" attitude that seems prevalent around here.

Sheppy,

Fair enough. I agree the final engine had some serious cutbacks (serious texture pop-in FTL), but it wasn't CG either.

@22: "With people like you around its no wonder Sony can get away with campaigns like "All I want for Christmas is a PSP"!"

They got away with it?

Some of you INFANTS don't seem to know the meaning of "shill". A shill is someone who helps promotes a product and pretends not to be associated with it. Two good examples would be the guy who a snake oil salesman gives his drink to and pretends to be cured, or a fake home buyer whom the salesman uses to create a sense of urgency.

Larry Hryb's job is to announce various Xbox Live offerings. Go to the www.majornelson.com site - it's where you learn about what face pics are available, and for how much, or what downloadable content. Stuff like that. It's basically a service to Xbox Live owners. On his podcast, he basically repeats the stuff on his site, then promotes stuff like the Elite, etc.

If he's such a Microsoft "shill", why did he for a few months discuss his failed attempts to purchase a Wii, and finally announcing that "Yes! I got a Wii!"

I'm tired of the uneducated high school and college students who are easy marks for real shills and just act like mindless "fanboys" (and I despise using that term. It's for children.)

Yeah, Sony's unofficial blog has a crappy podcast... that probably less than a half-dozen of the commenters here have actually listened to. But it's cool, since it's anti-Sony just jump on the bandwagon.

Though, speaking of podcasts making fun of other people; I remember not too long ago when the Major's podcast was mocking not just their own user-base ""Oh, wait a minute, 800 points, we want it for free!" but also the people behind their cash-cow of a game Gears of War.
But, I guess that's excused because he's "upfront" about being a mouthpiece for MS.

I'm glad this happened-- hopefully now Sony will realize that their blog is far better already than threespeech' crap has been from the beginning and shut that down. They don't need it anymore, and this stupidity can be used as the reason to cut it off.

That said, making the argument that Microsoft doesn't take potshots at the competition is just as stupid. Even if you only include quotes from Peter Moore there are enough anti-Sony remarks to prove you wrong. Sony has slammed the competition as well (though honestly, how many of those were from thank-god-he's-gone Kutaragi?), so there's blood on their hands as well. Personally I prefer the CG from Killzone in 2005 issue to the constant 'We swear, 360s only fail at 3-5%!' nonsense coming from Moore and others... but that's just personal preference.

If you're working in PR at Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo and you don't believe your platform is the best-- you're definitely working at the wrong place. And that means you're always going to get mistakes like these.

MS doesn't lie???

ROFLMAO!!! Let's see... What lies from MS marketing can I think of off the top of my head. Hmm.. Their XNA thing is the first and cheapest way to program for a console. Shadowrun being the first cross platform play game. MN is not a PR shill (you are ignorant.. no stupid.. if you think otherwise). 1080p is impossile in games (stated many times by supposed "experts" at MS, esp on MN blogs from a year ago). We are not making an HDMI capable 360. etc.. and that's just off the top of my head.

God. You have to be either a fanboy, or really really stupid, to not know that all 3 companies lie through their teeth constantly. None of them are any better than the other. Jesus..

And If you love MS so much can you explain -

No free multiplayer - first in gaming
Pathetic backward compatibility

I smell a podcast off!

Joystiq begins to break dance...

Three Speech like does ballerina...

All of us proceed to say "served" over and over again.

Nah seriously. I like 10 podcasts, and Joystiq is 10th on that list. Mostly for audio issues (balance the quiet guy with the super loud guy pzl kthx) and the fact it's the only one I STILL can't stream over the internet to my PSP due to web formatting incorrectly.

That being said, yeah Three Speech are hax, but who cares. It's a podcast. This bad press for another person's podcast kinda illegitimizes this blogsite personally.

What we want you, the readers, to do is to better understand where your information is coming from. With a slew of blogs and websites popping up every day, each with their own view of things, wouldn't it be nice to be able to look towards the source itself, the companies involved, and get the straight word?

Obviously, I live in a fantasy land, but why should they feel the need to hide behind ridiculous "semi-official" monikers? Why can't we hold their writers accountable for what they present, like every other blog in the world -- the same way I'm held accountable for this article and this comment? Remember, Sony went out looking for "journalists" to write for Three Speech and yet we get the Wizard of Oz routine. Why gamers don't want to better educate themselves on these kinds of subjects, I don't know.

It's not always "PlayStation" versus "Xbox" versus whatever, folks.

Ok Tom, what's cheaper than a free program to program for a console? What's the first cross Xbox Live game then? Microsoft said they would introduce 1080P when there was a market for it, not that it wasn't impossible. They said the same thing about HDMI. Funny how 1080P/HDMI tv's have only become commonplace in the last year, while the 360 has been out for almost 2. Stop making shit up asshole!

Actually there is free multiplayer. Just about every 360 with multiplayer is free. You may have to pay to access MS servers and play online but that'a an entirely diff entity.
I for one only have one game that I wish was b/c and that is Chronicles of Riddick.
By the way I by a next gen machine to play next gen games (been playing them since November 22nd, 2005...how about you?) so not being able to play games from an old system does not bother me much at all. I still have my Halo: special edition XBOX. So fuck off. I'm surprised you didn't mention wireless networking on your list..another thing I could care less about and will never need. How about Blu-Ray? LOL.

----------

XNA isn't a cheap way to program for a console? The intro version is free, it's programmed using Visual Studio - which is incredibly easy to deal with, well documented, plenty of demos and source...

And free... so yeah it takes time, but I think any game takes time, and it's been mentioned even by Sony themselves that it's easier to program for an Xbox (but apparently if you do the hard work for a PS3 you can conceivebly get better results).

I believe Shadowrun is the first crossplatform PC/Xbox game, no?

Is there a game I can play on my PC versus you on your PS3?

I wouldn't think of MN as a shill, he doesn't really advertise, he does do promos... but lets face it he works for Microsoft, he's a gamer, and really drove the blogging to get what he knew out there. Shill is a bit too derogatory a term to use for someone like that.

That or you can agree everyone on the Playstation.Blog is a shill also?

I'd like to see where anyone from MS said that 1080p is IMPOSSIBLE. As far as I can recall from Major Nelson and Ozymandias, both have said it is possible, only you sacrifice a lot on effects and visual elements because you have to process more lines, and more pixels in the same time as you would for, say a screen 1/4 the size.

This is fps we're talking here.

720p vs 1080p - four times the res? So basically you can either spend four times adding elements, or reduce that to produce a sharper image I guess.

Anyway, thats all I heard from Microsoft - that it was preferable to have more detailed images at a lower res to washed out, images at a higher res... because the performance of the game couldn't be sacrificed.

How many fast shooter games are 1080p on the PS3 again?

Not making a HDMI capable 360? I'm guessing at the time they thought they wouldn't be... but demand changed their minds.

Have you heard that the PS3 will never have rumble because it interferes with the SIXAXIS?

I know you probably weren't coming from a place of defending Sony, but you're right, all three do lie, otherwise you get situations like Sony suggesting there will be a price drop in a couple of months - so people put off purchasing the console.

It's a no win.

GFW Magazine is funded by Microsoft? You do know that ZiffDavis had to take part in a bidding war to acquire the GFW brand, right?

GFW Magazine is a very old and respected magazine (Computer Gaming World) made over with licensed branding. ThreeSpeech is Sony paying a marketing firm to create a blog. So yeah, those are totally the same thing.

Some of you people are hilarious. You think the Major is going to come over and hang out with you, maybe let you borrow a game? People, people, people...he's doing his job and yes, he's doing it fairly well. In the end, it's still his job and he'll do what he must to protect it and the product/company he serves (*coughfailureratenotaddressedcough*).
I think the real crime here is the obvious pandering Penny-Arcade makes to MS. This is really nothing new from them. I wonder how much they are getting paid by MS?

I find it absolutely hilarious that bloggers who have a completely horrendous podcast themselves are cracking on other new efforts.

No podcast runs smoothly when it begins, hell, maybe you’ll even have a good podcast one of these days Joystiq! Only saving grace (read: entertaining, non-annoying, informative and worthwhile to listen to) you guys have is Ludwig, so I guess it’s not all bad.

I figured if anyone would be forgiving of rough-cut podcasts it'd be you guys, guess not though.

p.s. - I'm not disagreeing; the Sony podcast was indeed horrible. But maybe it takes one to know one in your case?
