i don't mind the waggle if it makes sense. it's games that throw in the waggle just because they can that drive me mad. like super paper mario... whenever you used the fire burst and you had to shake the remote (or whatever stupid waggle it was). that doesn't make sense.

Worked: WarioWare Smooth Moves, Excite truck, Sonic & the secret rings, Mercury Meltdown Revolution, Mario Strikers Charged Football

Sort of worked: Red Steel - the pointing and shooting was kind of OK, much better than in COD3, but it didn't feel all that right

Not worked at all: Call Of Duty 3, Mortal Kombat Armageddon (the only motion sensing in the game is for the special moves, which i found tracked my up and down, left and right movements good; but never tracked the stupid Half Circle motions you have to do [up left, up right, down left, down right] correctly)

SSX Blur - 95% worked. still a huge improvement over old ssx's

Wario Ware - 100% worked. One of the best Wiitles out

Red Steal - 70% worked. Showed that FPS can be done. Only needed some fine tuning to be perfect.

Overall - for first gen wii games, they have been outstanding!

So far we have recieved great waggle, the only game I have a beef with is Madden and only on the defensive side of the ball. The controls seem really slow to me, I find myself doing the same motion twice to perform a Big Hit tackle, but that is my only beef. That and that I don't get everyones obsession with Wario Ware? I returned the game after 2 hours of playing it.

I liked Mortal Kombat VERY much! I didn't like Wario ware at ALL either, maybe it's the whole mini game thing, I am just not a fan. I Despised Rayman too, gave it to my son.

Controls have worked especially well in...

Zelda: aiming, shield attack
Tiger Woods: Swinging and putting
Madden: juking, stiff arms
SSX Blur: Steering
WarioWare: everything was recognized quickly - crucial to this fast-paced game
RE4: Everything - this is the way FPS (and over-the-shoulder) should be done

Controls have been bogus in...

Zelda: Sword-swinging
Tiger Woods: Adding spin
Madden: kicking, throwing
SSX Blur: Uber tricks

So generally I think the games I've played have got it at least half-right. I'd hate to play Zelda without the point-to-aim, but I would have found several boss fights (I'm thinking of a specific one near the end of the game) easier without the waggle-to-swing-sword. Resident Evil 4 is a ton easier to play with the aim provided by the remote - I'm actually considering buying it after weeks of saying I wouldn't just because the controls have impressed me that much.

#6 Elric:

I lik MK very as well, the only thing i absolutely hate about it is the motion sensing of the special moves. That's why i now play it with the classic remote instead of the wiimote.

I think any game designed for the PS2 and ported to the Wii with "added waggle" has been a let-down. Need For Speed, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and others, are almost unplayable. The whole idea of the Wii is to make the control easier, not more complicated and less precise!

After reading all these comments, I'm kind of confused...
@ b: You had trouble with the half-circle movements in MK. The half-circles are the only movements my Wii picks up all the time.
@ vidGuy: My sword swinging in Zelda never gave me a problem. It took me 3 or 4 tries to do a shield smash.

So is my Wii just backwards? Different than everybody else's? Special?

I love the way Zelda played. I think it made the game alot easier for me, which is kinda bad but I still enjoyed the game. I also liked Kororinpa: Marble Mania (the pig marble cracks me up!), which the game was way too short. Overall I have liked the controls of the games I have played.

Phil,

I'm not necessarily pointing out things that DIDN'T work, just things that hindered gameplay, in my mind. I thought the shield smash was done nicely - it was activated by a similar motion and recognized nearly everytime, at least for me.

The sword always works, but I think it is both silly and got in the way at times. Particularly, I'm thinking of a boss battle similar to one in OoT in which the timing of the swing is important - it would have been easier to do with a button press.

You bring up a good point though - the inherent difference in how people perform the motions can give them a widely different experience with the game. It's due to this that I've come to take reviewers comments about the controls with a large grain of salt. It used to be they'd complain about button mapping, and I'd agree. Now I disagree a lot with what some reviewers think works or doesn't work.

The only thing we can hope for is that either developers get the controls down so they work for everyone or that they offer several ways to play the game.

"It won't save? WTF's the point then?"
The point is we no longer have to log into an email account to verify each comment. I just save my password to a text file on my desktop and copy-paste for every post. Hopefully we'll soon be able to change the password to something easier to remember.

It would still be better than PS2's knockoff.

For me Godfather has the best controlls out of any Wii game I've played so far. No probs with Zelda for me either but not as good as Godfather. Excite Truck is great too. Red Steel for me was unplayable due to the controlls.

Zelda: Sword swinging was annoying, I thought all the attacks felt tacked on, except for aiming, which was okay (yet you could lock on 50% of the time)
Super Paper Mario: Tacked on, but it was fun to shack the remote for bonus ups. I'd say "cool"
Trauma Center: This game is win. A+ on forceps

There should be more games like Trauma Center and less like Zelda (in terms of controls. the game itself is very good otherwise).

Yeah the zelda sword feels really stupid after awhile since im just shaking the wiimote instead of acctually swinging. but all the other zelda controls were great, although i would like to have played the E3 controls, u know where u move the wiimote down to finish enemys? but i guess that had issues as well, zelda was designed for n64 thats the best controller to use, gc was ok nice to have c stick but other wise n64 controller works the best.

My favorite thing about the Wii set up is simply that your hands are free from each-other and it doesn't cramp up your shoulders. Thats enough for me.

Yeah, apparently they didn't have enough time to make the swordplay in Zelda Good.

Can't wait 'til the next Zelda which in all likelyhood will have 1:1 swordplay. =D

My greatest wii moment ever was waggling in zelda.

Striking that dragon with my sword felt awesome.

On that note, I actually really liked the controls in zelda, I agree that it made things easier, but I think that's good, a game's difficulty should be set by the content itself and not the limitations of the hardware. I'd take wii controls over gamecube controls in zelda any day.

I also thought that Red Steel had pretty good controls. It definitely had lows in terms of turning and the content itself, but aiming was easier than dual-analog sticks though lagging far behind a mouse. It was ok; I'm sure MP3 will go beyond Red Steel and be a shining beacon of inspiration to all other FPS games.

Sonic is the least intuitive game I've played on the wii, I had real difficulty getting sonic to do what I want. I stuck with the game though, and I think sega has done a great job on the controls (aside from going backwards, that was terrible). The whole sliding, jumping, homing thing worked well once you got your head round it, and the side-to side movement worked well from the very beginning. I'm looking forward to a similar sonic game in the future :).

Rayman / Warioware, both good; not much really to say.

Mario Strikers had good controls, but they could have been easily done with a standard controller. I still prefer the wii though because it is a relaxed sort of game, and it's good to be able to sit with my hands not cramped up next to each other but free at my side.

And that's all I got, in short, I like my wagglemote. I just hope that companies learn from their own and other's mistakes on how to use the remote.
