Madden 08 pulls out its weaponry
One of the new features of Electronic Arts' Madden 08 is the use of weapons -- special medals associated with certain players to signify their strengths. These aren't real weapons, mind you, but O, how we long for the days of Mutant League Football. These are more like situation-specific special moves. A player with the Big Foot Kicker weapon, for example, can kick the ball "farther than anyone in the game."
IGN is outlining the 24 weapons featured in the game, so that enthusiasts can start planning and dreaming up their weapon combinations. Cannon Arm QB with a Quick Receiver? Let's hope one of their defenders doesn't have the Speed weapon.

At least they are trying something NEW for their Madden franchise... still kinda lame.. but, NEW.
Nick @ Jun 27th 2007 2:05PM
Weapons in Football...Hmmm Pacman Jones should be pretty excited about this.
RoroCo @ Jun 27th 2007 2:07PM
New? They are just helping people who don't follow the sport outside of video games. I know that Brandon Jacobs is a power back while Warrick Dunn is swift. I don't need an icon to tell me that.
Maybe they are doing something else with it, but this is a pretty weak "gameplay" improvement.
{At least it is not the stupid vision cone... I ahte EA}
Josh @ Jun 27th 2007 2:08PM
Because the use of weapons has any relevance to football....way to try to sound fresh and try to market to a new demographic, but these should have been called "skills" or "attributes" and not weapons.
When are they going to revisit and update Mutant League Football, that was by far one of the best and more entertaining football games created.
rocko @ Jun 27th 2007 2:18PM
Well, roroco, if you know so much about all the players and hate EA, then don't play madden. Simple as that.
I think this is a pretty cool idea. Madden 08 is gonna kick ass.
Jeremy @ Jun 27th 2007 2:18PM
Mutant League Football on the 360 and PS3would = HUGE WIN
Or Mutant League Hockey for that matter

LAME LAME LAME LAME.
"Guys, guys, I got an idea - lets make a crappy football game, then try and make it seem better by adding in useless 'features'!"
Wildstyle @ Aug 14th 2007 2:03PM
Shut the hell up you puny nintendo fan-biotch. Mario's a fat whore whore who is way past her prime. Piece of shit spin-offs to his party games and what the hell is paper mario???? Do we need 3 of them if the first one sucks grizzly droppings?? HELL NAW!!! shut the hell up!!!
RoroCo @ Jun 27th 2007 2:29PM
rocko - Unfortunately, if I want to play any game using NFL teams and players, I have zero choice as to what games I play. Madden 08 will only rock as much as 07 did... as much as 96 did... as much as 95 did..
..because they are all the same damn game.
EA throws a couple small gimmicks in each year, calls it "innovative gameplay improvements", sits back and collect 60 dollar for anyone that wants a roster update.
This is getting old now and I want a real NFL game already.
Matt Q @ Jun 27th 2007 2:36PM
Mutant League Hockey was better.
Dustin @ Jun 27th 2007 2:37PM
*Yawn* I actually thought for a second (when the first info starting coming out) that maybe EA had gotten the message, but no, it's just another Madden...
I can miss a year of Madden and will instead pickup the All-Pro game, will it bother EA, probably not, is it worth a shot? Maybe.
Jonathan Tran @ Jun 27th 2007 2:45PM
Wow that sounds awful. They might as well just call it "Blitz"
Oh also, check out this video I worked on for the nintendo short cuts contest:

As a Packer fan, I find it funny that the one that has Favre's picture on it is also the one with the most counters to it.

I'm not trying to still up a hornet nest or anything, but what would the people who want something new like to see? I mean it is football, the rules and game play are pretty well defined now. I'm just curious if anyone had some ideas regarding what they could do new?
kraoro @ Jun 27th 2007 3:10PM
"Guys, guys, I got an idea - lets make a crappy football game, then try and make it seem better by adding in useless 'features'!"
Isn't that what every EA meeting sounds like?
Paul @ Jun 27th 2007 3:12PM
Zero - step one would be getting the rules RIGHT - there have been huge missteps over the years that intrepret the rules of football in an incorrect way, that needs to be corrected.
Step two would be an indepth franchise mode, they seemed to leave this out with the jump to the new gen.
Allow people to design plays, better AI, smarter controls and so on.
Jonathan Tran @ Jun 27th 2007 3:15PM
-Create plays
-Create players
-Recruit-a-marching-band mode
-Whore out your stadium to the advertisers of YOUR CHOICE
-Online replays of matches
-Downloadable play by play recreations of real games, so you can watch at any angle!
JodyAnthony @ Jun 27th 2007 3:18PM
I think we all know the best football game ever was Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl. Gotta love the Troll Bowl.
Dustin @ Jun 27th 2007 3:24PM
Off the top of me head I'll just throw some ideas out to you (some of these may be rectified in the new one, we shall see):
1: PRESENTATION, they have the ESPN license USE IT, I love to see the clips from other games, highlights of yours, a half time show, you could also do a draft show for the computers picks instead of just sitting around, I can literally think of a million ways to improve the piss poor presentation Madden has had for awhile.
2: Owner mode having expansion teams. Remember that, picking a stadium, uniform, logo (use forza 2 like editor would be awesome) you could take your expansion team online against others.
3: Fantasy Draft! or call it whatever you want, but someway to reshuffle all the players and draft them.
4: I understand they are working on the player animations so I will just say, let's hope so.
5: Laser guns
Mini-camp was heading in the right direction let's hope it takes a step forward not backward. There's more I could come up with if I sat and thought about it, but unfortunatly I am not paid to do so, so back to work for me...
Dustin @ Jun 27th 2007 3:27PM
Oh and I forgot the most important ALLOW TWO TO FOUR PLAYERS TO PLAY AT THE SAME F'ING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Megaqwerty @ Jun 27th 2007 3:35PM
@14 Let everyone control one player, preferably one persistent character
God damn. It's so obvious and is something that arguably (albeit not really) last-gen consoles couldn't do. With online services that are integrated across the board, it's actually quite feasible and be a massive innovation for the genre.
When 2K Games releases their football game, I'll most definitely be buying it and putting it on a shelf somewhere: I hate most sports games, but I want them to keep on truckin'.
Psychotron @ Jun 27th 2007 3:37PM
Two changes I would love to see: 1) The rules! It's 2008 and the game still doesn't allow you to attempt to return a missed field goal. Hello? This has happened a couple of times in the last few years and it was damn exciting. 2) How about specialized plays. Fade pass to the endzone anyone? How cool would it be to have Cutler throw an endzone fade to Walker and have the game change to cinematic mode (different angles) to see what the result was? I drank the Madden kool-aid for the longest time but somehow it all came to perspective back in madden '05. I had been playing the same game forever. Haven't bothered with madden since.
Jonathan Tran @ Jun 27th 2007 4:28PM
Also bring back the dreamcast VMU screen so only you can see what plays you're looking at/choosing
Almack64 @ Jun 27th 2007 4:35PM
Yeah VMU play picking FTW
Sean @ Jun 28th 2007 10:58AM
lol @ referring to skills the players have in real life as weapons.

*Yawn* It's going to take a lot more than that to draw my interest away from 2K8.
July 17th can't come soon enough!
Wildstyle @ Aug 14th 2007 2:03PM
