PS3 firmware 1.82 on the way, adds AVC High Profile playback
Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations, posted on the company's official blog that firmware 1.82 would be arriving on the PS3 in the next few days. The update's sole new feature appears to be AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. Now, instead of having to make due with Main Profile AVC, you'll be rocking the Separate Cb and Cr QP control and the 8x8 vs. 4x4 Transform Adaptivity! *drool*
Lempel said that the update doesn't fix the audio problems that some commenters on the blog had complained about, but said that "hopefully this update is moving us closer." In other news that is not of any immediate help to anyone, Lempel says that Sony is "continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility." Let's keep our profiles crossed.

Once again, i feel ashamed to be British :( who are these sensitive souls who complain about adverts and what not? Can't we put them out of their misery?

I guess it's an okay update, but Sony knows what we really want. GIVE US IN-GAME XMB ACCESS NOW!!!!!!!!
russ @ Jun 27th 2007 9:57AM
So...It does WHAT exactly?
"Separate Cb and Cr QP control and the 8x8 vs. 4x4 Transform Adaptivity!"
erm.....what?
TiaMaster @ Jun 27th 2007 10:01AM
Does any of that make me want a PS3?
Something in the article to answer that for us non engineers would be nice.

You can watch your pirated movies off the internet on your PS3. Happy now? You read an article for programmers and need the cribnotes.
deaftly @ Jun 27th 2007 10:12AM
in game xmb access isnt going to happen anytime soon, if it was in their plans you would have already seen it done on psp, this isnt the xbox360 dashboard which was designed to be accessed anytime during any game, it wasnt just slapped together like the ps3 xmb was, all they did was take the psp interface and port the same thing to ps3

Normally I'd agree with you... okay, maybe not, but one of the very first showings of PS3s XMB was changing resolution within the game of Untold Legends. So for some reason, they couldn't get it to work. Doesn't mean they are not working on it right now.
Also, keep in mind, you don't have full access to your dashboard within a game. Still quite a few options left out.
FrankTheCrank @ Jun 27th 2007 10:25AM
Gimme DIVX/XVID playback now.

@sheppy
you have access to all the things that matter, not just an option to exit out of a game, why would you want to go to the xmb in a game anyway, its not like the ps3 has a friends list or the option to send messages or invite people to a game, honestly its not even needed until sony gets a decent online service going
Jake @ Jun 27th 2007 10:37AM
guys im in the warhawk beta and home beta and you can send messages in home beta and in warhawk u can tell people to come in....if anyone wants warhawk email me with ur psn account! only a few days left!

They've already implemented the feature, but games have to take advantage of it. See links below; Obviously, Joystiq doesn't keep up with all the PS3 news.

You've... you've never touched a PS3, have you? Some games feature invites. XMB features a friends list, voice chat, messaging system, block users, versus history (aka, last people you played against), and even the ability to video conference. It's just all the in XMB and not in game.
Also, the options I was referring to were things like resolution or Live settings, or hell, even browsing the hard drive. Also, when the wireless adapter is doing it's usual "fucking sucking" that the official brand achieves so well, I'd like to be able to switch between the wired and wireless networking within a game (since I have to get up and unplug my network to plug my 360 directly into the router). And to me, those features are important and I have to back out of the games to access them. Which is why I boot to the dashboard and set things up before I play.

I have that cat "game" and it's true the stuff does come up while in game. You can also play that game thru remote play on your PSP. It works really well, if I didn't already know it was running on my PS3 I would have thought it was running on my PSP.
Of course I can't read Japanese so it was mostly just see it work not to really do anything. The cat thing did go take a dump one time then he did push-ups...
Angelo @ Jun 27th 2007 12:39PM
I'm hoping to be able to play x264 content. MKV's are the way to go, DIVX/XVID just looks like crap.

Good. Now we need an update so we can display backgrounds
